Xbox online through Gamespy

Yep, only two weeks after launch people can already play online with the Xbox. Gamespy allows you to play online for free with three games at the moment; Halo, THPS2x, and NASCAR Heat. I wonder how this is going to affect MS's online plan which is probably going to be pay to play?

Have you tried it yet? I'd really like to know how good the games play online, how bad is the lag?

Why is Xbox going to be a pay-to-play? Is it going to connect to Microsoft servers to find games? I think that be pretty sh**tyy.

umm, i've never heard MS state that they will charge for service... this is new to me.

I tried the X-box at comp-usa,Playing at 640X480 sux,s.Well the good side will be getting rid of the kids on the computer on the networks so buy all theX boxes you can .

I believe it was in either EGM or on Gamespot(I know they're owned by the same company) in an article they said it would be pay to play, like what Sega is doing now to play games online.

AFAIK, that is just a rumor circulating around. But, that said, it wouldn't surprise me. I don't see Mickeysoft doing it free. They've got to recoup all the money they're losing on the consoles Since when has MS ever offered anything for free?

I've just played a couple games of Halo on Gamespy and it seems pretty good. I will not pay to use Microsoft's service, as Gamespy offers reasonable gameplay. I played split screen with my brother, against three other Xboxes, and the lag was not so great, but playable. I have also played a full screen match which I created myself, and the lag was non-existant. Next, I am going to serve again, but play split screen. No final verdict yet, but so far so good. I will keep you guys updated.

Just got done playing some deathmatches on Halo using the GameSpy tunnel software.

All I can say is WOW!. I have never had so much fun playing online before.
Huge areas. Runnin over people with the jeeps. Unbelievable sound. It is fun.

Wooohooo! I just finished playing a 2V2 split screen game against another pair. It's one of the best multiplayer experiences I've had in a long time.

You do realize that if Microsoft charges, you will not be able to play on gamespy, right? Of course, Microsoft would have to be out of their minds to charge for internet play.

I don't see how Microsoft would have any jurisdiction over gamespy. System link is a built in feature of the Xbox which everyone is free to use. Gamespy merely creates a portal which fools the xbox into thinking it's on a lan.

I agree. I don't know what Microsoft can do to FORCE you to use their service...well maybe they can buy out GameSpy.

I hate gamespy. The ads are annoying and such... but it's cool that you can hook up your Xbox to it!

MS has a history of charging for many games they make, so its not a surprise. MS servers for games I've played really suck, they get laggy at random times (so bad you can't play), they go down a lot too. I'd rather pay at gamespy then receive free service from MS.
