Xbox - Price Slash
By Todd Mowatt

With the ECTS just taking place MS let the proverbial cat out of the bag earlier this week, indicating to retailers and analysts that the company will soon slash the U.S. price of the Xbox console to $149.99

The price drop is expected to take effect on September 23, 2002.

?The price drop for the Xbox isn?t going to be a shock to anyone in the industry,? said Edward Williams an analyst with Gerard Klauer Mattison.

The price cut also make sense considering that MS announced a price cut in Europe just last week , MS predicting a sales surge in Europe because of the price cut, with a corresponding increase in software sales.

Williams said the price cut shouldn?t be construed as ill-health in the interactive entertainment industry, MS is looking to get an edge on it's competition before the Holiday Season starts.

Heck, if both Microsoft and Nintendo trim their prices by $50.00 I'll just have to buy both.. It wasn't long ago that I paid $300 for PS2.

I doubt Nintendo will drop any lower. Mario just came out, and Starfox, Zelda, and Metroid are all looming over the horizon.

The Xmas, Nintendo = teh winnar

No offense to Xbox patrons, but its over for the Xbox :/

Now with the new no-solder modchips for the Xbox coming out, I think they are gonna blow wide open. They'll finally start competing with the PS2.

I really don't think it's over, since there are nice modifications coming out for the x-box. I say that this is just the beginning. This might push me to get another one, just for the mods.

Well we can argue which system is better forever. The simple fact is lower prices are better for us the consumer. Pretty soon most gamers will have all 3 consoles.

I checked gamespy.com and could find this anywhere. Can anyone find a link?

I'll get it when it's $99. With a mod chip for it too.

Not sure about that one, I don't own one but with linux being a possiblity here this could change things dramatically.
Now most of the PS2 peeps have no stinking idea what FPS is from a pci slot so there's gonna be limited numbers of people that would take advantadge of it but hey 150.00 for a linux box sounds pretty good to me that doubles as a dvd and gaming console.

It is far from over for the Xbox...

I remember having heard the same type of fanboy garbage when the PS2 was struggling in its first year and a half or so. I personally believe that the Xbox will gain momentum this holiday season, and it will be become (slowly but surely) a dominant force in gaming. Microsoft has spent far too much money to break into this market to lose.

Christmas will tell the tale. XBox has a tremendous number of titles that are soon to be released. It is simply too early to write its obituary.

I wonder if there is $150 worth of re-usable components in an Xbox?

I haven't heard of the no-solder chips...last one I heard about was the 1-wire mod chip that is out now. However, that is a bit deceiving because you actually have to solder 11 places, I think. PM me if you have any info...I'd be interested in hearing more.

Also, I think MS is changing the XBOX boards now days. If I remember correctly, they are on their second or third motherboard now, so it sounds like they are going to try the dodge game along with Sony.

$150 is a great price. I might have to pick one up after the network gets up and running.

wow, that is great news. i have been a loyal PS2 owner (actually, i was probably one of the first people to purchase a PS2 in the U.S., given that the local Target accidently had a couple of units out 1 week before the release date), but at $150, i just may have to bite. splinter cell looks fantastic.
