I was a little surprised about the performance of Assassin's Creed... but not in a good way. At least based upon the Ars review, I expected it to run very well on the Series X, but I did notice framerate hitching. I can't really attest to the graphics quality as the last Assassin's Creed game that I played was Origins on PC. It seems fine, but given that Ubisoft prides themselves on their graphical fidelity, I kept getting this feeling that it didn't seem as good as some recent first-party titles from Sony. I think the biggest problem is in the face where it looks more like I'm watching people in rubber masks re-enact the Vikings.

One other weird aspect, and I'm not sure if it's a bug or not, but the game seems to have side quests (the blue markers), but it doesn't always update the map or even track them. For example, I was in this one town, and this guy told me to meet him at the docks (quite vague in this city), and I eventually just kind of ran into him. After that, he told me to meet him at some north point, and I just sort of gave up at that point. To note, I kind of detoured off right after getting the ship, so I don't know if it's a timing thing. Maybe it also relates to my difficulty setting as Valhalla gives you multiple difficulty sliders for different aspects (enemy health/damage, stealth, etc.). I kept mine on the default, so I figured that might not be it.

That sounds rather nice to hear! I wasn't sure if it was a congestion issue due to having no real issues with Assassin's Creed at around 8:30PM CST. (That was when I got the 325-380Mbps.) On the other hand, I was installing Yakuza around 10PM CST. So, it might be that I was trying to download during a heavy use time for the west coast.

In Valhalla the quests don’t show you where to go. Once you discover the quest giver it will but after you start you are kind of on your own. There is a mode to show you more markers for where to go but often you have to follow a character without a marker floating. It helps if you use your raven to scout ahead and it should highlight quest areas. I don’t have a problem with how it looks, it’s a different style than some other titles though. I want to say it looks more like CG at times than an actual person, kind of plastic. I’ve only encountered one spot in actual gameplay that had any frame rate issue too. I couldn’t reproduce it reliably so I didn’t think much of it. The cinematics are probably not 60fps and you can tell so they aren’t smooth at times.

Overall though I am enjoying the game a lot. It’s refreshing to have a game that understands that I’m an adult and can handle blood, dismemberment, some nudity etc without censoring it or presenting it in an unnatural way. Everything happens just matter of fact as if it’s just normal. I appreciate that. The kill animations are pretty cool as well.

That might be it. I'll admit that I haven't noticed any tearing yet (I haven't really been on the look for it either), and the frame drops haven't been too bad so far. It feels like a small dip from 60 to maybe low 50's. It's just enough for you to notice it as it only lasts for a split second.

I'm still very mixed onto diving into the HDMI 2.1 world right now. The biggest thing is that I see myself eventually having three devices (PS5, XSX, and HTPC) that all support HDMI 2.1, and I don't want to invest in an AVR that only has a single HDMI 2.1 port. It's mostly that I try to keep an AVR for a decent amount of time, and if I bought one now (at full price), I'd have to turn around and buy another one in 1-2 years. Although, the PS5 doesn't support VRR right now, so it might not be the biggest deal at the moment.

Looks like QC might be an issue? Maybe bad PSU?

Already been debunked as fake.

Don’t buy an AVR at all now. The chips don’t pass 4K 120hz HDR. They black out. Need a hardware fix. My AVR is useless for 120hz gaming unless they come up with a program to get it repaired.

Good to know, caught that in my feed this morning. I thought the magic smoke looked wrong.

I bought a receiver that supported earc - I am not trusting the receivers to negotiate all the HDMI 2.1 features anytime soon. I am just going to plug the high end stuff (really just one console?) into my TV. Trying to decide between a really nice 65” or something like the $1500 86” LG from Costco. I know it will be some sacrifice, but my 1080p projector that is a decade old now still wows on 90” screen and this has to be better than that

Good call on the VRR/Freesync requirement. I was planning on that but now am going to be double sure that works...

Yeah we are waiting to see if they will replace our AVRs or offer a repair or what.

So, of course I didn't read the instructions on the storage expansion, and awkwardly, it didn't work at first. I'm not sure if it's normal -- since I still haven't read them -- but I put it in the console prior to turning it on, and it didn't show up under storage. While the console was on, I removed the drive and inserted it again, and I got a prompt on the screen immediately noting that the drive was setup.

Wow, that is awkward. Seems like it should work either way, but for sure when it is installed with it powered off.

TweakTown.

No console launch is perfect, and gamers are reporting issues with their Xbox Series X systems like strange clicking sounds.

First alleged Xbox Series X hardware issues: Faulty, loud disc drives

Fortunately, I can say that I haven't seen this occur. Although, speaking of the disc drive, I did try to pay attention to see how loud it was while installing a game. Honestly, it wasn't that bad. It was audible, but it didn't have that jet engine sound that some drives have. However, I haven't tested it during a movie, which may spin the disc at a different speed.

It's odd that the Series S sounds like it has some mechanical issues in it, without a disc drive.

It almost sounds like a relay that won't stop clicking.

I thought it would be the disc drive myself. But after you reminded me just now that the Series S don't have one....Well, yea. I didn't remember that detail till ya posted. And yes, it does sound like a relay.

Hm... what about a bad fan?

But then again, some of the consoles are not even pulling in the discs.

Honestly, I have never dealt with any Xbox internals. But it would be great if it was the fan. Would bearings in a fan make that noise ?

I haven't had a chance to listen to the video yet, but a fan can definitely make a clicking noise if a wire happens to stray close enough to it. I had that happen when I switched video cards in a PC from an AIO-cooled card to a standard triple-fan setup. I didn't care about the cables from the WiFi/BT card before, but then they started contacting the fan. Oh, and I found an interesting thing... I was trying to figure out which cable was causing the aforementioned issue, and I let the PCI-E power cable go and it smacked against the fan. The cable was plugged in, and it made a nice pop along with a bit of a spark when it hit, and the whole PC just shutdown. I'll admit... I was sweating bullets!

EDIT:

But then again, some of the consoles are not even pulling in the discs.

Yeah, that sounds like a bad disc drive. They do use a slot-loading drive, which... don't they normally use an arm to pull the disc in? (I had to tear apart my old PS3's Blu-ray drive once when the laser died, but it has been a while.)

90" screen. That;s so 2000. Son, I've been playing on the 16:9 portion of my 120" wide Cinemascope screen since 2007 and in 16:9 I have a nice glorious 105". But damn am I not going to be able to get a nice projector that handles VRR anytime soon. Even the JVCs are on backorder due to supply chain issues. I'm still using my RS20. But this weekend I get me a 77" OLED.

That clicking sounds like something grazing a fan blade while it spins. Curious if there is a cable/wire close to the fan that could come dislodged during shipping? No noise with our Xbox Series X. Haven't used a disc, so I don't know. The system itself is very quite. Could hardly hear it when we booted it up.
