I'm about 12 hours into the game so far, and it's not so bad. I'm currently not even done with the first section (Aphrodite) yet. Probably the most fun thing for me in the game -- as is likely true for most open world games -- is when a game tells you "Oh, you can't do that yet!", and you find a way to do it anyway. In this game, you may end up seeing prompts stating that you do not have a specific Godly Power to do a chest or a Vault of Tartarus. For example, there's a chest on the first starter island that you cannot grab without an upgrade to Herakles's bracers. (It's the upgrade to let you pull and carry heavier items.) In that case, I just went up above, grabbed a big rock, and tossed it on the pressure pad. (I also had to drop a Phospho-based clone to get enough weight.) There was a vault where it stated that I needed an upgrade (one of the vaults with an Aphrodite's Tear), but I made it through the vault pretty easily.
Although, speaking of vaults, I did my least favorite one of all... Medusa's Lair. Awkwardly enough, even though Medusa is shown in an in-game video, this
is not a boss vault. The vault has a ton of air vents and lasers, and you have to fly through said lasers. I can tell you now that if you die in a vault, you simply go back to the last checkpoint in the vault. Even if you fall with no health, you simply are returned with a sliver of health. I can attest to this with much experience as I fell down many... many times. My recommendation is to avoid using the gliding speed upgrade (it's a purchased upgrade). The problem is that you need to be able to stop and have an air vent raise you up to the correct height, and I find it really hard to stop when you're moving really quickly. Also, the same dungeon has a chest in it that is far easier to get if you have the in-air slowdown when charging a bow upgrade. It is possible to get it without it (I did), but it's a very tight timer.
A couple thoughts on abilities...
- Phospho includes an upgrade that allows you to sneak around without being under cover. It's a really handy way to get a sneak attack on enemies that are more or less out in the open.
- I would strongly recommend considering getting both the Athena's Shield and Haephistos's Hammer abilities. The prior is a good single target damage ability (also adds a good amount of stun) and the latter is good for lots of smaller enemies. Just note that these have a pretty hefty stamina cost, so you can't spam them too easily.
- The magnetic pick-up ability is actually quite handy for one specific thing... getting Pomegranates out of trees. Given that pomegranates are used to make health potions, they are quite handy and the trees are the fastest way to get them.
- I recommend grabbing the ability upgrades that let you move faster with an overall less stamina drain. Stamina can be a heavily limiting factor in some earlier tests. The Odysseus tests, which involve firing Apollo's arrow through successive axe hilts is one area where you may need stamina pots in addition to finish them. (Along those lines, I prefer the armor that gives stamina.)
- Using the gear that gives you 150% damage against an uninjured enemy can be dastardly when combined with Herakle's bracers as you can shave a huge amount of health off by throwing a rock at an unsuspecting monster. I've dealt over 2000 damage in a single throw using this.
I think my TV is just a little too old for that. I ended up turning it down to 800, and it seemed to be a lot better.
