  • If you’re an existing online 12-month or 6-month Xbox Live Gold member, there’s no price change. If you choose to renew your membership, it will renew at your current price.

I've been doing Ultimate for awhile now, but just realized that I haven't used it for a few months now. Sucks that there isn't a much cheaper fall back option to just play online.

There was, back in the day on a PC without Xbox in the scene to screw people over by claiming a managed server scheme. Now all the crack addicts are on their network so it is time to double the price of that crack, you addict.

The thing is many of us converted our live gold subs to game pass ultimate for $1 so we are kinda screwed now. I did this and my ultimate is still good until June 2022. I rarely use my xbox one S and I gave my nephew my old xbox one and let him use the sub. Up until now I was using microsoft rewards points to keep the sub up but it's going to be impossible since they raised the price.

Imagine being one of the first ones to get an xbox series x and you find out a month or two later that the price to play online just doubled.

You're not screwed? You knew at the time of sign-up that it converts your Xbox Live Gold to GamePass Ultimate and it was permanent. They make it very clear during the process. Why exactly are you complaining? You gave your Xbox away and you don't even use it? You got exactly what they told you they would give you. No one screwed you. Don't continue your subscription after 2022. "Problem" solved.

This has been known or suspected for quite some time. They are eventually moving everyone to Gamepass. It's not "no reason at all", you even say this is clearly to move people to Ultimate.

Check out post #432 from Oct. 5th of last year, in this very thread. I said they are probably moving Live over to Ultimate long term. We had a conversation about it.

<insert fake surprised/shock here> "LOL"

By "no reason at all" I mean they aren't giving you anything more of value.

Like at least when Prime raises prices, you get all these new things included like music, groceries, etc, even if you don't use em.

With XBL you are doubling your price but getting nothing extra in return.

Wow you are so special because you said they are moving XBL to Ultimate long term. Want a cookie?

Such a stupid move on their part.

I don't know one person who buys an XBL membership through Microsoft direct. Everyone I know buys cards for $35-$40 for a year when they come along and stacks those.

Because they are slowly moving people towards GamePass. You can be silly and still pay a higher price for Xbox Live Gold, or you can turn pay the same price for GamePass ($9.99 month) and have access to a huge library of titles. You also get access to Microsoft and Bethesda games on launch day.

You singled out Prime, but the last prime price increase from $99 to $120, did not offer anything new. Also you failed to mention services like Netflix that increase cost and do not provide new services.

Yeah, I already explained that I understand WHY they did it. Read my first post about it. That doesn't mean I have to think it's a good decision or be happy about it.

I didn't realize Bill Gates posted on here. Nice to meet you though.

Prime is always adding value that they previously didn't. I couldn't place orders at 7:30am and have stuff delivered by 10am when I was paying $100/yr for it. Now I can.

Netflix has more and more content. Whether you watch that content again is up to you.

I'm complaining because it's going to cost $10 a month just to game online with an xbox. Some of us aren't anandtech ballers. $100 for internet plus all these various entertainment subs, prime, etc. adds up quick when you're on a limited income. I'm just trying to be nice and help out my 12 year old nephew but I don't know if I can now.

I personally prefer PC gaming and microsoft just reinforced why the PC is superior.

Ok, buddy. You're the one on here who everyone knows you don't like the Xbox. So anything you say is worth a grain of salt.

You scalp consoles and rip people off by overcharging them 2-3x the price of the console. But you want to sit here and act all high and mighty and look down on Microsoft for increasing prices. Pot, meet Kettle.

Yeah it's mind boggling to me how there are people in this thread who don't understand how having to pay double what they are currently paying, for absolutely no extra benefit to the consumer, to play online would upset people.

Uh what? I've owned every Xbox console since their launch dates. I spent $800 on X1X launch to play 1 game. WTF are you even talking about?

You're just mad because I'm not on MS's nuts at all turns.

I bet you were a supporter of the always online "feature" of the Xbox One before it launched too. And look at what happened because of all the backlash - they removed that "feature".

I loaded up on the 3-month Ultimate cards that were on sale all over on Black Friday because I knew I would go in and out of using the service.

Again, you can move to GamePass Console and get added benefits. You're a moron if you pay for Xbox Live Gold at $120 a year vs getting GamePass.

Of course you can do that.

It was nicer to pay $40/yr to play online rather than $120/yr to play online.

How are you not understanding this?

And no, paying $180/yr for GPU vs. $120/yr would be the stupid option if all you are doing is playing games online with the subscription.

So you'd be a moron to pay for GPU if you don't care about any of the added benefits over XBL if all you want is XBL.

If you don't think so I'll give you my paypal address and you can send me $60 since you don't care about money.

Because this isn't a surprise. They run a business and their model is to make money for their shareholders and the company. I understand it completely and you are free to vote with your wallet. Don't use it, if you can't afford it or don't agree with it. But you're not being completely honest that you can't get more services for that increase in price. You just have to switch to the GamePass. We've all known they were doing this and it's going to continue to move that direction. This isn't the first push towards it.

You're apparently unaware that GamePass Console is only $120 a year, not $180 GP Ultimate. GP Console gives you access to the Launch Day games as well as the library of games you can download. Including Microsoft, Bethesda, EA and other games.

Also, there has been speculation that Xbox Multiplayer may become free. It was at the same time the rumors started that Microsoft was going to phase out Xbox Live Gold. We're just starting to see that and other things may be coming.

You know, before you start telling people they are unaware of stuff, you may want to be aware of what you are talking about.

Gamepass Console does not include online multiplayer.

So add to that, anyone who wants to play games online and is paying $120/yr for Gamepass Console is a moron.

Wow. They backtracked + will be removing the Gold requirement for F2P games (finally). Price to remain the same.

No Changes to Xbox Live Gold Pricing, Free-to-Play Games to be Unlocked [Update] - Xbox Wire

We messed up today and you were right to let us know. Connecting and playing with friends is a vital part of gaming and we failed to meet the expectations of players who count on it every day. As a result, we have decided not to change Xbox Live Gold pricing.

We’re turning this moment into an opportunity to bring Xbox Live more in line with how we see the player at the center of their experience. Free-to-play games will truly be free and you will no longer need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play those games on Xbox. We are working hard to deliver this change as soon as possible in the coming months.

If you are an Xbox Live Gold member already, you stay at your current price for renewal. New and existing members can continue to enjoy Xbox Live Gold for the same prices they pay today. In the US, $9.99 for 1-month, $24.99 for 3-months, $39.99 for 6-months and $59.99 for retail 12-months.

Thank you.

That was a strange move to make, good to see the resulting outcry actually worked this time. Would love to see what is going on internally. Seems like someone was against this hike to begin with to reverse it so fast.

Oh but hey, we should all just accept it because @LikeLinus called it months ago and said we are all morons for not paying the new prices.
