XBOX BY FAR!!!!!!!!!!11 I have had all 3 and XBOX has the best of everything (games, accessories). Oh, and the modding is a HUGE plus too...

Halo/Halo2 and PGR/PGR2 are the only games not having an Xbox makes me feel like I'm missing out on. And Halo only because when I play against my cousin he creams me so bad it's pathetic. The PS2 has games like GTA3, ZoE2, and Disgaea.

I can't play FPS games on consoles anymore. Goldeneye for N64 was probably the last console FPS I played and soon after that, I discovered the mouse/keyboard combo for PCs.

Both of them have their pluses and minuses:

xbox: better gaming power (newer than ps2), halo 1+2, able to mod (at least for now), xbox live

ps2: more games library, grand turismo, can play ps1 games, popular overall (the largest number of console purchased)

I think you need to decide which games you/your cousin like the most and pick the system that will play those games instead of the other way around.

I forgot to mention that my cousin is a 13 yr old kid.

He likes car racing (like NFS), and martial art games (like lortal combat n stuff) and games like Quake3 and Unreal tournament...

He has a elder bro (15 yrs), who plays Age of empires all the time..
It would be great if he can use the gift too. Is age of empires available on XBOX? (any suggestions for games which are similar to age of empires are also welcome)

Martial arts games and racing games = ps2

FPS games = xbox

Not sure which console to recommend for real time strategy games, thats really the pc's domain (big time).

And here is the most important advice: focus on the games (which it seems like you are trying to do). Look at which console can play the most games that they want to play. If you need help, use a site like gamespy which has top 10 lists for each system and is a good start.

Xbox has PGR, PGR2 and Burnout3 for racing, DOA3, Mortal Kombat Deception and Ninja Gaiden for martial arts, Halo and Halo2 for FPS. I'm not aware of any RTS titles for Xbox but I haven't looked into it because I think RTS would be exceptionally difficult to play on a console. I say go for Xbox.

I have both. I feel that the XBox controller is FAR FAR superior to the PS2 controller. The XBox, hardware-wise, is superior to the PS2.

But what it really comes down to, in the end, are the games. Halo 2 rocks. But does does Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Find the games that your cousin likes and you'll find your system.

ok, here's the breakdown.

anything worth playing is or will be out for both consoles with certain exceptions (tekken, re, pe, ff)

xbox has superior hardware and can be used as a media center.
xbox has better graphics.
xbox has better emulators of legacy / arcade systems.
xbox has better online play wheter you want XBLive or a free 3rd party solution like Kai
having a hard drive is a total ++

but

ps2 has a lot more or should i say most of obscure japanese titles some of which completely pwn
ps2 plays psx (prev gen playstation) games (~15K titles)
ps2 has more games in general
ps2 titles of major games are usually faster to ship than any other platform unless they're xbox or gc specific

that being said. if you're buying a console for a youngin GC will have more kiddie titles

I am a bigger fan of the PS2 because i perfer the games that are ps2 exclusive.
I was never a big FPS guy, so halo really doesnt do much for me, but it is fun go to a friends house and fire it up

I've always perfered the less arcadeish oriented games ie)Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid.

But everyone had different tastes, why don't you just simple ask them or play it cool into a conversation if you want to keep it a surprise.

it depends on the type of games you play.

XBox = great for FPS and online games
PS2 = a much wider selection of games, a bunch of exclusive titles, and it is the best system for RPG's (the only RPG xbox has worth playing is Knights of the Old Republic, which is also availible for -- and better on -- the PC).
