I have decided to get a next gen system. Allready have a wii and well after zelda I'm bored. But here is the issue. I live in the country. I get pings in the high 800's if I am lucky. Thus NO ONLINE GAME fun.

SO if you were choosing from what looks to be coming out in the next holiday season would you go xbox or ps3 for non online game options?

xbox....better games out right now for the 360. if you want to play the old games...you'll need to either download the patches from xbox live as they come out or burn the files to a cd from xbox.com...

ps3 is decent because it plays at least 90% of ps1/ps2 games and is getting better ps3 games as we speak.

+1 for the Xbox. Even without online gaming, you can still do the marketplace stuff, which I think is very well thought out. You can also get a PS2 if those games interest you, and it would still be less than getting a PS3.

Out of all my systems, I play the PS2 the most.

I'm having plenty fun with minimal online activity on the PS3. All of the heavy hitters coming up are offline SP except for Warhawk. Home will be useless, but Littlebigplanet is supposed to have a robust offline mode once it ships on disc.

(I picked games likely to have good off-line gameplay)

You just have to look at the games for both systems.

At this second, 360 has more games, but PS3 is about to come out with its good games this year.

Second, if you have an HDTV, getting a blu ray player is a huge plus for PS3, if not, just a useless addon.

Personally, I have an HDTV, I would go with PS3, I have always like their exclusive games more than other systems as I am not a FPS fan on consoles.

Not to pick nits, but there is only one, maybe two, FPSs in all of the 360 games I listed in the post just before yours.

I'm happy with my PS3, but unless you want blu-ray there is no reason yet or any time soon to buy it instead of a 360.

Even for all the cross-platform games, the 360 is generally as good or a little better. This might change someday when better PS3 libraries exist, but that's the misty unknowable future.

The main thing I would do is wait until later this year, for the revised 360 with a 65nm die shrink CPU and possibly also a 65nm GPU. The current 360 has a much higher failure rate than it should, and sometimes scratches discs enough to make them unplayable.

I want a 360 for games like Dead Rising and Crackdown, but I'm catching up on uplayed PC and PS2 games while I wait for the reliable version of the 360 to come out.

Edit: not fair and balanced, but funny comments: we luv u Nik!

I'd wait until fall to buy (actually, I AM waiting until fall to buy). PS3 doesn't have much worth playing right now. 360 does, but has a tendency to die frequently; that may be corrected this fall. If not, Microsoft can rot in hell and Sony will definitely get my money. Waiting until fall may also give you a better indication of which high def DVD format will prevail (right now Blu-Ray is doing better). And if Sony's sales continue to lag, there might be price cuts from MS and/or Sony before the holidays.

I agree the 360 has a high failure rate but the company sends you a box to your doorstep and pays for shipping to and from the repair shop so no cost to you as long as you have their warrenty.

I have never heard or ever seen a 360 ever scratch up a disc ever!

The 360 has a much better library of games as of right now! (June 5, 2007)

The Ps3 may get better games and may surpass the 360 in quality games but to me they are losing quite a few exclusives... the two that immediately come to mind are Assasins Creed and Devil May Cry... Squaresoft does not know if they want to maintain their exclusive to playstation but I could be wrong...

It depends on who you talk to. Some CSR's will tell you that they'll only pay shipping and send a box if you're in your first 30 days. Most people have had to cover that themselves lately.

Also, once you receive a refurbed 360, you're only given a 90-day warranty unless you had bought an extended warranty.

Apparently there's a class action lawsuit going on for scratched discs.

Are you sure that's not Blu-ray? Blu-ray has a problem with scratches... although i hear that there is a revised version of BR that is more scratch resistant.

Blu-Ray can't deal with scratches as well as DVD/HD-DVD because the data is so close to the surface, but it is also extremely scratch-resistant because of Durabis.

And the replacements are just as prone to failure. So it buys you more time, but it does not give you a system with lasting reliability.
