<< In this one thread alone, we get more than 10% of the posters complaining about defective XBoxes.

Have you ever seen this percentage of complaints about defective PS2's? Gamecubes? NES'es?

No way.

This thread itself is proof of the absolute failure that is XBox.

Ummm... there were some issues when the PS2 came out weren't there? I'm pretty sure I remember hearing something about memory cards. Remember the PS2 was launched in Japan before the US (uncertain about the Gamecube), therefore the US got the "second generation" PS2, when most of the production issues had been addressed.

Gamecube was launched a couple months earlier in Japan then it was in the US. September IIRC.
XBox was the only console to be launched in the US before Japan.

This is MS, what do you expect.
They will have XBOX2 for you to buy soon, which will fix the current problems and add new bugs so you will buy XBOX3
and so on

I believe the Gamecube was released in Japan in September. I haven't had any problems with my Gamecube nor have I read of any common errors people are having. Even with what is said about the xbox I would like to have one as a second console.

look at MS Intellimouse explorer, i've replaced 3 of them already.

MS can't even make a mouse that doesn't crash.

Only problems I've heard is the Gamecube possibly overheating (the fan in there is small and quiet, thus doesn't move much air) and the thing cracking. The cracks aren't big though, just very very small cracks in the corner. I heard Apple had the same problem with their cube computer. Must be how the plastic acts when it's in a cube shape or something.

Yellowplastic doesn't believe in such useless things as "sample size". If it were up to him, he could ask 2 people if they had any problems with their xbox, after one would say he has the occasional error he would conclude that 50% of all xboxes are unusable and MS has gone out of their way to buy the most defect-riddled components to screw over as many users as it possibly could.

Yellowplastic, stop spreading the FUD. If you've had issues with the xbox and/or any other MS products, then by all means, tell us about it. There's no need to spread unsubstanciated rumors like "XBoxes are failing at record rates, and Microsoft is refusing to replace them"

<< YelowPlastic -- the link you posted was junk. You just hate Microsoft a little too much I dislike them as well, but I don't go Microsoft bashing, just like I do not go Intel or AMD bashing.

Give it up please.

Yep, those anti-MS comments are quite simple to pick out. I doubt anybody is really dumb enough to believe garbage like this so I just assume it is an anti-MS comment. If not, the person saying "the Xbox is failing at astronomical rates" (something to that extend) is really ignorant.

Yellowplastic,

You got flamed to hell in the last XBOX thread you started, now you come here talking the same sh!t. Just give it up because nobody wants to read your unfounded, unfactual opinions.

Edit : Link to Yellowplastics previous BS thread.

That's something that stupid people have spread around. The truth is that there are tiny lines by the corners of every gamecube, and they are all completely identical. They are not cracks, they are really tiny lines in the mold.

The Apple cubes actually had cracks (because they are like thick shattery CD case plastic), the gamecubes don't (because they are rugged almost rubbery plastic like the controllers).

There is a Reuters story this morning where Microsoft has now agreed to replace the xboxes in Japan that are scratching discs. They stopped short of a recall, but have admitted that the Xbox could be causing the scratches.

I get SOOOOO tired of people b*tching about their microsoft products... If you hate microsoft so much, stop buying their products and shut up about it.... people are constantly complaining about the instability and insecurity of microsoft OS's yet they are afraid to try anything else. If you hate xbox, dont buy one. If you hate the intellimouse, try logitech. But stop complaining about how everything you use is MS and you hate it all.

yellowplastic, do you know why there wern't these "widespread problems" when PS2 launched? Remember how there WERN'T ANY SYSTEMS TO BUY? HUGE SHORTAGES? Remember that? There wern't any huge problems because no one had a system to complain about. And although this is a M$oft product, remember that they didn't actually make the thing. Most US XBOXes were made by a company called Flextronics in Mexico to ensure more units at a better quality. Please do some research before you come into a thread like this spreading disinformation.

EDIT: Wired article on XBOX "instability"

I'm not taking sides here, but if you think the Playstation 2 is a perfect unit, then you're living under a rock. Since the launch, there have been several problems with the Playstation that seem to keep coming up over and over. It scratches an unusually high number of discs due to it's magnet system of holding the CD in place. It has overheating issues, they stop reading blue bottom discs all of a sudden, DVD movies don't work, read errors during DVD games, etc.

I'm not saying it's any worse than the XBOX, just noting that both systems have their fair share of problems. If you ever read The Spot at videogames.com, you'll know that it is a daily column that responds to view email. Every week, there are always constant questions about PS2 problems mentioned earlier. And this has been going on for over a year now.

The only unit that is very rarely mentioned with hardware problems is the GameCube. But, then again, it's using proprietary discs and no DVD movie playback, so it might be a tighter unit by design.

The PS2 and XBOX both have problems with their system. Neither manufacturer will fess up to it, either.

One thing I still don't understand to this day, which has nothing to do with hardware... what games are people playing on their X-Boxes? The only game I would consider buying for that machine is Halo, and maybe I'd rent 2 or 3 of the current games, but that's it. And I can't think of one title in the coming year that even remotely interests me... (That's just my opinion though)

I'd say they are playing games like Max Payne, SSX Tricky, Madden 2002, PGR, NBA2K2, NBALive 2002, NFL2K2, Tony Hawk 3, Onimusha, NHL 2002, or All Star Baseball 2003.

Seems like a pretty decent collection of games so far.

Wll I bought my xbox after Christmas and have had zero problems whatsoever with the unit. Plays DVDs fine, runs games great, and plays for hours...I couldn't be happier with it.

Folks, I appreciate the input, but didn't intend this thread to become a flaming issue. I basically wanted to know if others were having problems and what solutions they were applying. If the problems were consistant and widespread, then maybe someone at MS would see a pattern and might fix it. Overall it seems that the majority of xbox owners are happy and satisfied with their unit, so perhaps I just got a buggy one. Still haven't figured out my next step, but if I had to do it again I would probably still go with the xbox. No, I don't love MS, but I will use products that work (which is why I still love DOS ).

anyway, thanks for the input and maybe this has helped someone else.

The disc scratching happened to the PS2 in Japan as well, and Sony said it was user error. if it was user error with the PS2, its probably the same thing with the Xbox. The PS2 had alot of problems, more than just overheating, when it came out, tons were recalled, and some they just flat out refused to take back(ask any retailer about the PS2 launch, alot were stuck with returned dead units, and Sony wouldnt take them back). The Xbox isnt a failure, its failure rate is pretty low. Disc read errors are a problem, it seems the DVD drive if fickle, unless the disc is totally clean, theres a chance you'll get a read error, could be because how it reads the disc. As for for playing DVDs, the Xbox can play alot more without problems. The PS2 still have a ton of problems with playing DVDs.

There's plenty of people that don't have a PS2 and only have a XBOX. The fact that they were released on PS2 first doesn't disqualify them from being good.
