Has anyone heard if this fall/winter when the Xbox2 is released.. will owners of current generation one Xbox's be able to trade in their old unit for credit? Just curious, I would like to sell my old unit soon if not because the price on the last generation will surely drop like a rock.....

Well, you'll undoubtedly be able to trade it in at any variety of gaming boutiques.

Realize that they're only going to give you like $10 for it though, since everyone's probably going to be doing just that. If you're asking if Microsoft is going to buy them back: Of course not. Why would they?

And where did you hear that XBox 2 was coming out this fall/winter?

It's all over the web. EA leaked the information saying that the next Burnout game would debut with both the Xbox, Xbox 2 in Q4 2005.

Yeah I've seen several places that have been saying the Xbox2 would be out in the Winter. We shall see though.

EB?

The same EB who pushed back the release date on Half-Life 2 like 8 times, right? That EB? You'll excuse me if I take a 'wait and see' attitude, I hope.

Most industry "experts" believe MS will release Xbox2 this winter, several months before the PS3's Japanese release.

Valve wrote Half-Life 2 & Vivendi / Sierra software distributed it. It was delayed by Vivendi because they didn't like the idea of Valve selling directly to the public through Steam. EB refers to Electronic Boutique, the mall retailer of games. I can only think you confused them with EA, Electronic Arts, but EA did not have a hand in HL2.

He could mean the release date they set on their website, like expected in stores or something. If so thats what they were told and could not have foreseen the problems it had that pushed the date back.

O Yeah I almost forgot. you should trade in the box's 2 months or so before the release. youll have to live witout them fo a while (it might not be so bad if you got a ps2 or pc to hold u over) but you should get the full $80 trade in credit.

But i like dashiki's idea of converting them if you dont feel like tradein them early and would only get like $30-$40

AFAIK, backward compatibility has not been confirmed for xbox2, so you may not want to trade it in...

It wasn't Burnout.

It was the next Need For Speed game they announced for all next gen consoles including PS3, Xbox 2 and Nintendo's next box.

Most people are suggesting at this point that Xbox 360 (the supposed name of Xbox2 now) will come out late this year. But no, they're certainly not going to give you any money for your old one.

Rumors are heating up that Nintendo may be trying to get Revolution out by the end of the year too, though that seems less likely. PS3 certainly won't be out this year.

Different CPU family, different video hardware, and VirtualPC on Macs (using similar PowerPC) is too slow for gaming. Odds of backwards compatibilty are not good.

Yeah don't trade in your old XBox, mod the crap out of it, and make it more a multimedia center than a game console. You wont be dissapointed, plus it will bring much more life to your box.

I disagree. Emulating the Xbox is a much simpler task than emulating the entirety of an i386 platform. There are a lot of speed tweaks that would work for Xbox code that wouldn't work for general x86 code.

Or, Microsoft could pull a page out of Sony's handbook and use a P3 733 for some sort of I/O controller, and avoid emulation altogether.

Are you confident enough to be thinking of selling your xbox1 while keeping your game collection?

It's certainly possible that they have managed to map ATI's hardware to nVidia's, and that the CPU can manage to emulate an x86 better than a G5 can. And that they're saving this as a surprise (why?).

It just isn't wise to sell off your Xbox early until they confirm such emulation exists. It might not even be wise do it until the Xbox2 is actually out and people can test how well the emulation really works.

wow um how are they gonig to print so fast. is this really confirmed winter 2005? Wow that would actually be weird considering it would have only given the Xbox 4 years on the market, whereas the Ps2 will have 6 years on the market.

It may be a paper launch. Anyway, the older pre 1.6 boxes can be modded at no cost into linux box, XBMC, etc. No other stand alone mpeg4 player compares. I can't see selling these fine gems yet. I'd buy 30 more at $10 a pop.

It would be illegal for MS to emulate nVidia's shaders... emu is NOT going to happen.

Nvidia doesnt OWN shaders(Its like saying Toyota cant use round tires because ford does). Pixel and vertex shaders are based on DX8 and 9 spec, which I believe belongs to microsoft.

That's what I figure; I know nVIDIA and ATI were quick on their paper launches with PCI-e cards.

That said, when I was referring to EB, I was in fact referring to Electronics Boutique. I am aware that they had nothing to do with the development and distribution of the game, but their irrational eagerness to put up any sort of a release date, no matter how insubstantial, would make me hesitate to automatically believe them.

In other words... EB is too quick to put up a release date that is very likely to just be wrong. I mean, there was an EB by my house that just changed the release date week to week when Valve was in the middle of that whole stolen code fiasco. When Microsoft says something officially, I'll pay some more attention.
