I just finished unknown after a first-time play through on the PS3. Pretty good game. I never played the original. My only complaints:

1) I swear there is something wrong with the hit probability rates. I never had that impression playing Fallout, but I can't tell you how many times I missed with 45% hit rates. it seemed to me I missed the huge majority of them. I never kept records to audit this, and I realize in the "heat of battle" missing can be annoying, so it may have biased my perceptions. I will say the substantial majority of shots from my main heavy (all seeming to have a 45-60% chance of hit most of the time) seemed to miss. For me the heavy class was really quite awful. Their heavy gun's accuracy sucks and it doesn't cause much damage even when plasma. Sniper class was great, and the assault class with run & shoot plus the double-shot became absolutely devastating with the alloy cannon.

2) The game absolutely needs a fast forward. When a unit is moving it needs to be possible to speed it up. Outside of battle, when I was moving around or what not it just felt slow and irritating.

3) The action point system in Fallout is superior. I'm thinking Fallout 1 & 2, where you can combine movement and firing, with various things taking more points. I know there are pros/cons to both and how tactics in a game work, but I just preferred Fallout's approach.

I'll play enemy within when the price comes down further.

Absolutely agree with #1, though either it somehow starts to make sense later in the game, or I just adapted to how bad the estimates are. I dont understand why there is a % they show on screen, and then some off screen real percentage. JUST SHOW THE REAL ONE!!!!

Also, when I first started playing (before playing on iron man). I svae spammed this one level because I basically lost everyone. There was this one 40% shot I kept taking over and over again, and missing EVERY time. Im guessing they determined whether or not I would miss before it ended up being my turn, but its pretty annoying.

As for #2, you can start to move other units while others are moving. I think its r1 for ps3 users. Doesnt help when your attacking, but at least its less running animations.

This must not be my day for gaming (see my dark souls thread if you need context)...because i've been playing through Xcom: Enemy Unknown, and while it is fun--i have some gripes about the difficulty seeming to spike randomly for no reason in certain missions...you know, going from excellent excellent excellent to 6 dead reall important soldiers...but that's a gripe for another day...

My engineering menu is just gone...and i saved and reloaded and its still gone....so basically i can't do anything, and i'm playing in iron man mode, so i don't have any other saves. Pretty cool day so far.

Apparently it's by design. At the start of each game a bunch of percentages are seeded: 15,60,65, etc. Then these are used, in order to be a number that your hit percentage needs to be at or above. If it is, you hit, if not you don't. That's why reloading a game won't work and you'll always miss shots, although if you know the next shot is a high number you can throw it away on some other move.

Wish I knew this a week ago!

you guys realize this thread is not about the original game but about the expansion, right?

I am not sure about that, but it's possible.
It's just that it's a bit tricky and confusing to discuss bugs of original game in this thread which might be fixed in EW... just saying
The was also relatively big patch to the original game, but you probably have that.

I thought I/C was easy playing through it. So I went to I/I. The difficulty spike was very steep, like going from High School sports straight into Pro sports.

Playing on Impossible now to learn tactics, reloading to the start of mission if I wipe. Planning on doing I/I soon.

In XCOM, aliens don't abduct you. YOU abduct aliens. LOL

Anyway, still playing EU and I'm about to trigger the Alien Base Attack can't wait to have this wrapped up and moved on to EW.

All right I could just be out of practice, but is anyone else sensing a higher difficulty curve in Enemy Within? Even taking no chances and saying "fuck the meld" I always end up encountering a mission before getting carapace armor that my squad simply can't handle, playing on classic.

I'll figure it out, just annoying. After some practice with Enemy Unknown I learned how to play conservative and never fail a mission on classic. I don't know if Firaxis did some re-balancing or what, but they're ruining my perfect-record abilities damn it!

You might want to check of the Youtube videos of this guy: https://www.youtube.com/user/Beaglerush

He's playing Ironman Impossible and some of the tips have been really helpful. i.e. using grenades early on Dr. Vahlen be damned; flanking; moving under cover and concealment; and always make sure that you "first move" all your people before consuming their second move by going on overwatch.

I sold off my steam cards and globes and whatnot to grab Enemy Within on Steamsale. I'd almost forgotten how much fun this game was.

Just completed my first month, getting killed really bad. Cant afford anything I need, dont have the special resources for good armor, Losing men faster than I can replace them.

And thats on Easy.

Any advice?

The last time I played Enemy Unknown on Classic, I found a very useful tactic. If you can get a guy to flank an alien, even on a double move, and have another soldier that can see it from anywhere on overwatch, that flanked alien won't fire or move.

Stick to cover. If one of your guys isn't in heavy cover, and you have contact, he's probably going down.
Use overwatch. Don't be afraid to retreat. Try to level up your snipers.
Use grenades. Especially if you've got clustered enemies.
Keep your team closely together, so you've always got superior firepower.
When you spot an alien patrol, retreat to a defensible position, they will usually come for you. Flanking is dangerous, as you can uncover more patrols.
Don't rush, unless absolutely necessary.

If you have to go out into the open, stick to at least low cover, high ground and reasonably close formation. Don't cluster up too tightly, to avoid triggering AOE-attacks.

Basically, at no point in the game can you realistically afford to get hit. I think I did the later missions with two medics, but if one of your guys is exposed, doesn't matter if he has 20+ HP, he will likely go down, and if not, it will often take two of those valuable medkits to heal them back up.

Some people also like to use smoke, but I think in the normal game, there's not enough smoke to routinely use it. Still, if you end up in half-cover and spot some enemies, with the rest of the team behind, it's best to smoke that guy, let him pull all the fire, or have the AI reposition, and the regroup and use superior firepower to take them out.

That was a bug which I'm pretty sure they fixed with the expansion pack.

This is probably the most important advice in this game. GO SLOW. Inch forward, and if you even get a hint that there are aliens nearby, then stop moving forward and wait for your sniper(s) to get a good firing position. Then inch forward again.

Basically, at no point in the game can you realistically afford to get hit.
And this is the basics here. The game is not about good strategy, it is about perfect strategy. As you get more and more powerful gear the game just gets harder, not easier, because while your snipers might start to kill an alien every shot, the aliens will kill your guys just as quick, and there is only 5 of you while there might be 20 aliens.

Can someone offer some tips on mechs....I'm on my 6th classic ironman attempt and I finally made it to (and past) the whale mission and I have a pretty good squad of Sergeants and Lieutenants. From what I've read, Heavies are the best for Mech units due to their already slow rank progression?

Do you folks always use Mechs early or do skip them and go with the gene mods later game....I'm curious to hear some tactics as I've finaly got some momentum here and I don't want to blow it..: / heh

I usually ended up using MECs as forward spotters for squad-sight snipers, and as melee. Two of them can put out a LOT of melee damage, and melee always hits for max damage.

Thanks Dave, I ended up using a corporal assault last night to make my first Mech.....I havn't had a chance to use him yet.

Did I read right that mechs get no Cover bonus? Why would you ever take "Automated Threat Assesment" which gives +15 defense? Seems like even with that you'd be an automatic hit everytime.....I must be missing something there.
