Xeon 450 2Mb worth $109?

Back in 1998 I would have loved to have one of these but I didn't have $1,500 to spare. Now I see I buy these anywhere for under $150. I have seen deals as low as $109. I am generally a person who buys in every time I can double my CPU clock speed for about $100. I am running a 400 mhz Celeron and my question is What benefit would I see from this CPU and what additional costs are involved? Will I need a new motherboard? My current motherboard has a slot 1. If I need a new motherboard which board should I look for and why? What else will I need?

You will definitely need a new motherboard, Xeon's are Slot 2. As far as which motherboard... Very few people here will have any clue. They're not exactly common, I can't name a single one off the top of my head.

As far as performance, you'd get MUCH better performance in everyday tasks by getting a Duron & overclocking the hell outta it.

You need a Slot 2 motherboard for these kinds of cpu's. You won't see that much difference between the celeron and the xeon. The xeon was made for servers. I would consider a 600+ celeron or a copermine P3.

The motherboard I have heard most often recommended for these is a Supermicro. Least expensive and very stable. Depending on the features you want you can find them hereSupermicro. Xeon chips only perform well in very specific applications that can utilize the large on chip cache. They speed up computations by not accessing your onboard RAM. I think two applications that work well are SETI and RC5. There is more information on the web about this, you have to search a little. Try 2Cpu.com for starters.
