Anyone have any experience installing an engineering sample CPU?

I'm thinking about purchasing an older xeon I've seen on ebay going very cheap and I'm just trying to cover all my bases. In the description it says that it is recommended to inform them of the motherboard and BIOS version before buying to confirm compatibility, which is fine.

Does anyone know if upon installation that I would have to play with the BIOS in order get it to recognised the model of the CPU, from my understand ES cpus are missing some ID codes because they are not final production. Or would the BIOS automatically recognise it regardless of its type?

Thnx.

It's best to send your motherboard info so they can confirm it will work with an ES (certain boards or bios will not). I've never had any issues with ES CPU's and they sure sell a lot of them on ebay. CPU-Z doesn't always identify the cpu, but other programs will ID them..

HWiNFO can detect an ES..

I'm running an E5-2690 v1 ES on an intel dx79to board, it seems to do pretty well on windows 7, and occasionally locks up in windows 10.

Edit: looking back I wish I would have spent alittle more to know it's not the cpu. But I'm pretty sure my issue with mine will resolve on its own when nvidia releases more current drivers.

I'm running Win10, is there any way to determine if the lockups are a CPU compatibility issue or are you sure It's an nvidia card problem?

Im looking to purchase the E5 2670 v3.

The 2 mobos I have my eye on are based on the X99 chipset:

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/msi...dr4-sata-iii-6gb-s-sata-raid-pcie-30-(x16)-at

Only that when I had a 290x card in the system I didn't have the issue, and with a 1070 GTX in the system it didn't lock up in windows 7, but would when upgraded to Windows 10.

These 16 core Broadwell-EP V4 Xeons work with the MSI board (bios update may be required), but not the Gigabyte.

Going the ES CPU route, would it be smarter to go with a single ES CPU in a board that allows overclocking? From some of the rudimentary research I've done it seems that some ES cpu's are unlocked.

I would be very happy to get a ES CPU that can be OC'd enough to put me near a 5960x performance levels at much less cost.
What do you think?

I'm looking for a balanced mix of high clocks, reasonable amount of cores (6-10) and a modern platform. Would greatly appreciate input on this.

Yes, that's very tempting. So what's the deal with the 1.6Ghz clock and 3.0Ghz max? I see that the retail runs at 2.1Ghz from the benches. Does it idle at 1.6 but when put under full load it maxes out at 3.0 automatically without the need to overclock?

Correct.. Pretty sure that board supports Multi-Core Enhancement, max turbo all cores is 25x I think. Talk about good value for a beast of a machine, I'm drooling. Sitting here looking at my X58 stuff and realizing what it would cash out at.. Hmmm

Selling an Engineering Sample is illegal. It's the property of Intel.

They are all over ebay and sorts, Intel problary cares less with year old chips and more so with samples of products yet to launch. I would think.

Are there x99 boards or LGA 2011-3 boards that allow processors to be run at max turbo all the time? I have used software like Throttlestop that allows me to control my CPU's clocks in windows easily.

Im now looking at CPU's (8 to 12 cores) that can can be locked or at least stay at 3ghz and above most of the time.

I plan to hold on to something like this and then get a 5960x or 6950x when zen comes out.

or is it just simpler getting a 5820k/mobo combo from microcenter and calling it a day?
