Update with who has the chip and who has overclocked it to what:

Myself: P6T Mobo, 3.2GHz @200BLCK, @1.25V, 3200-4000Turbo

jason166: P6T Mobo, 200-205BCLK, 3200-4000Turbo

TerryMathews: MSI X58A-GD45, 200-215BLCK, 3600-4000Turbo

ragnarok77: Bloodrage Mobo, <150BLCK

rolodomo: Bad Memory Control - sent back for replacement

Markfw900: X58-UD3R Mobo, 3.4GHz@190BLCKx18

Yreka: X58 Sabertooth Mobo, 3816@212BCLKx18 @ 1.3V

Aurkitu: P6X58-E WS Mobo, 3.6GHz@200BCLKx12 @ 1.26V

So consensus seems that some ASUS boards (mainly vanilla P6T) have problems with turbo of 18x working in Windows. Other boards seem to work fine with it. Most system should be easily be able to hit 3.6GHz (18x200BCLK) at or under 1.3V.

CPU is here!

Very nice OC's guys.

I'm thinking about picking up one of those CPUs but I'm not sure if my mobo would be compatible. I am using a Biostar T-power X58 running an i7 920. This looks like a good upgrade if it works

my ud3r can only get to 155, I just got mine also. I have another thread about my problem, please reply to it if you have any ideas

Great OC !!

Just ordered mine. It will be arriving here between Monaday and Wednesday. Once I get it I will run benchmarks and post them up on here. Which games or benchmarks should i run?

I've noticed that at stock it would turbo up to 2.40GHz (133x18).

When I set it to 18x in the BIOS it shows a POST screen of 18x200 (3.6GHz).

When I get into Windows, CPU-Z only shows 16x200 (3.2GHz).

Not sure if turbo still works on my board when overclocking.

Either way it's running at 16x200 @1.3 Volts for about 83C under full load with my Scythe Ninja 2 heatisnk.

I'm happy, basically a i7-970 for 1/3 the price.

Plus the seller I bought it from now has them down to $93!!!! I should buy more

I can't get mine stable over 215 BCLK, regardless of how much Vcore I throw at it. It really seems to like 215 though, it'll run that at +0.3V which seems to translate to an idle of 1.088V and a turbo Vcore of 1.35 at 18x, 1.4 at 20x.

ETA: had to go up to +0.35 to get it stable enough to run Intel Burn Test. Haven't decided if I'm comfortable with that Vcore yet.

ETA2: Backed it down to 213 BCLK, came to rock-solid stable at +0.3V. Trying +0.25V, so far I'm at 11/50 complete in Intel Burn Test. Seems to be working out to 1.3V at 18x for a grand total of 3842MHz.

Still waiting on my chip. My Bloodrage was stable at 223 (920 at 19x). I could push it to 225 stable on high voltages and it would boot and load windows at 227 (but not much else). It will be interesting to see what it does with the L5639. I'll report back.

Nice looking board BTW.

Brand new in box for $108 shipped. Anyone who's thinking about building this combo from the ground up should be taking a hard look at that.

It's weird, sometime I open CPU-Z and notice the multiplier bouncing around from 16 to 17 to 19 to 20. I don't think it's reporting it correctly.

Edit: I don't know if CPU-z can be trusted to report the correct speed. Core temp also shows weird x.5 multipliers too.

An interesting note, Core Temp lists TJ MAX for my CPU as 79C

I'm seeing results for 3930K @ 4.2GHz to be 324.4 fps, and a 2500K getting 205.9 fps. Are these results consistent with the benchmarks you guys are running?

Link deleted pending more research...

I think the link I posted before was some ripped off content reposted to a weird site, so I deleted it. But there is a thread on Handbrake right here at Anandtech with lots of interesting results.

No, that's how its supposed to work between SpeedStep and Turbo. If the workload is contained to 2 cores, it will go up to 20x. If it needs all 6, it goes up to 18x.

Yep, you are right I forgot about the Turbo Boost for the other cores. Awesome! 4GHz in lightly threaded programs and 3.2GHz with all 6 cores.

Seems to. I can't say I've ever used one though.

I think the price/performance ratio is through the roof.
Only if your motherboard overclocks well. My chip@2.8 runs the same as my 950@4 ghz, and the 950 can be had for cheaper.

I love my 3930k

hey I just sold my 3570k and ordered one as well I'll post overclocking results as soon as i get the system together, but I have a couple questions. First, what will temps be like? I'm running a thermaltake water 2.0 pro. also, how good is single thread performance compared to the 3570k? i expect it to be worse. most importantly, what mobo should I get? I'm thinking foxconn renaissance II, but is there a better one for $115? I think you guys may have started something big which is why im jumping on it quickly while I have the money.

also, I'm getting a gtx 770 soon so it'll be cool to see how it stacks up with one of those

Would it be fair to say that an overclocked L5639 approaches a stock 3930K in performance?

Not really, but that doesn't mean it isn't great little chip for someone in need of multithreaded performance that happens to have an X58 board.

3930K default clocks on the Handbrake bench 325fps.

So 75% of the performance at 20% of the price?
