Been running x58 for awhile now, had a Rampage II Gene with a 950, a Silverstone 850 psu blew both of those up, switched to my backup P6T and an ES W3570. The quad wasn't very ocable, and my old P6T is on it's way out. Just got an x5650, I can oc it much further on the same sick mobo. Kind of annoyed about the sometimes 22x multi, sometimes 20 under heavy load. Have a Rampage II Extreme coming, costing me a small fortune, but I figure the 16+3 phase might help with ocing a hex, and maybe it locks at 22x? Anyone know?

Yes, it should.. SaberTooth does, and hits 23X turbo. The X5670 has some interesting speed changes. I see 24.5 under loads in handbrake. 4.77Ghz

Heh, that's cool. These Westmeres are interesting chips. I'll post results when I get my RE2.
Edit: and Hi from Techpowerup! I've been a member since 2007, it took this 1st gen xeon
talk to get me to finally join here. Wish I had done so sooner!

I have to admit, X5670 renders safely at 4.7Ghz where as the X5650 struggled above 4.3Ghz. I think I need to try an X5675

Encoded 2 movies totaling 3 hrs. 42 min. in 15 min. and never broke a sweat (60C after volt & bclk tweak)..

Pretty sure that's what it's going to take to beat YBS1, and I may have to delid to get it done on air

Uh....Xeon is soldered...so delidding and re-soldering won't help much. Are you still using your middle weight cooler? If so, get a D15/IB-E Extreme and go for the record!

I just ordered a NOS 5675, in case you need competition, er...backup.

CoolLink Corator DS is akin to Noctua.. It does fairly well.. well worth $20..

For $20 that beats my $25 Mugen 4. But, not quite in D15 range - expect at high clocks (4.6+) the D15 would best it by 5-8 degrees.

If you wanted to spoil your bargain cooler motif could add a pair of Vardar 120 F4ERs.

What are you going to do with the shiniest silver chips? ;-)

They're going in Dell Precision T3500's for resale, EXCEPT the one I keep

I already changed the center fan to a 2600rpm that's 87cfm (higher than the Vardar you spec'd for $8), so $25.50 total..

Coolink Corator DS CPU Cooler Intel LGA1366,LGA1156,LGA775
Item# 281145782083 1 $12.50 USD

Shipping and handling $5.00 USD

Total $17.50 USD

Your bargain finder skills are legend.

But mfg specs for fans are based on marketing fiction, not fact. ;-)

And mounted on a cooler, cfm isn't as vital as static pressure. The Vardars (and GTs) are among the best fans for coolers/rads. Altho, at 2600rpm that fan should have decent static pressure. Likely, not as good as a F5 Vardar or F12 industrial.

Since the goal is a glory run to steal YBS1's thunder, you could pick up a couple San Ace server screamers and spin your way to victory and return to civilized fans once the trophy is in your hands. ;-)

Sanyo Denki fans are 38mm & won't fit. I chose the 25mm AVC ball bearing duct fan for it's static pressure. It's an open bench case & I sit 2 ft away from it and can FEEL the air.. The goal here, is to cut render times to under an hr. for a 20Gb Blu-Ray.. X5670 comes close :|

Oh...it's not just glory, it's glory with a noble purpose. Gonna be tough for YBS1 to beat that.

Have you started binning your 5675s? If you get one that clocks at 5.2+ 24/7, you know you win the internet, right?

Lol,, no, the deal fell through. They went for crazy $$. Not getting a slew of Xeons I'm pretty happy with the X5670.

@Burpo and @surfin - here are 8 Xeon X5675 for $100 each, and there are a bunch more around $120. Seems like a decent deal right?

Meh.. I got an X5670 for $79 + $2.99 ship as an experiment to see how well the higher binned EP Xeons overclock vs the lower. They struggle at 200bclk & up, and heat becomes a problem much faster with the higher multiplier. Mine is running stable at 197bclk, but temps get higher at 200 bclk (loaded) than an X5650. I'm happy with it & done X58 experimenting..

Hah! I bet neither of us get that screw driver..

Same offset voltage at 197bclk for the 5670 vs your 5650?

No, admittedly it is lower.. I was PUSHING that X5650..
X5670 performs fine @ 197 bclk (4.7Ghz) tho. Good enough

Poor man's 5820K for sure
