I'm thinking about trying out the l5640. Does anyone here have experience with it? It runs a 19x multiplier and if it can run 220 bclk like the l5639 it might be a decent chip. Or would the x5650 be better overall?

Just get the 5650

Anytime you run bclk that high stability is an issue. The X5650 is better..

Thanks to this thread, I've run both the 5650 and the 5675 at 4.8 stable. Both are awesome chips and yield a great running PC for being as old as they are.

Hey guys,

I've used someone's settings a while ago on this forum, because they had the same motherboard and x5650 as me.
I'm not very experienced at overclocking so I left the thinking to someone else

At the moment I'm running at 4095Mhz and I've been pleased with the results, except for my temperatures.
In some more demanding games, the CPu goes up to 80°C, and that on a Dark rock pro 2 cooler!
I can hear the rock doing its very best to cool this beast, but the sound is pretty much unbearable for our living room
Before that I had a smaller cooler that had the same problem, I upgraded to the rock hoping it would be fixed...

Does anybody have the same problems and any advice you can give me?
I'd be very grateful!

Here's the settings:

Adjusted! apologies
To my knowledge you're not always able to really control your fans with speedfan, right?
Just watch your temps?
I'm using open hardware monitor..

Try dropping the offset voltage to 0.22 - 0.25 ( your 0.30 is a bit much). Everything else looks fine.

Thanks a lot Burpo, will try that tonight!
Do you think the high value may be causing the high temps?

I think taking a 2.66Ghz CPU to 4.29Ghz (all cores) is giving it a real work out when gaming for hours. Back off the overclock to 180bclk & drop voltage offset to 0.20. Games will still be smooth w/less heat & fan noise. More settings you can change.
BCLK frequency – 180/181
PCI-E frequency- 100
CPU PLL Voltage – 1.80v (standard) – (may be raised up to 1.88v safely within Intel specifications)
QPI/DRAM Voltage – 1.2v (standard) – (this maybe raised up to 1.35v but recommended to 1.3v tops.)
IOH Voltage – (choose the standard voltage)
IOH PCIE Voltage – (choose the standard voltage)
ICH Voltage – (choose the standard voltage)

Major thank you Burpo, I have changed my settings exactly as you recommended and now my temps under gaming load ar 60-65°C, instead of the 80+ before!
Everything still seems smooth enough, so all is fine

Good to hear! Typically you don't need that much voltage for a lesser over clock.. Saves on the power bill too

Hi guys!
I'm seeking some advice here, as I am hitting a wall with my Xeons.
I have 2 of them, a x5670 and a x5650 (brand new, 2 days old ).
On my Asus Rampage III Extreme, the x5670 is going up to 187 bclk, running stable for hours with good temps. On my Gigabyte G1 Assassin, I can't go past 166 bclk...
The x5650 is running 200 bclk on the Asus without any problem. But on the G1 Assassin, again, I'm hitting a wall at 166 bclk.
The thing is, I could really enjoy the better SATA 6G controller of the G1 as well as all the USB 3.0 ports (lots of photo and video editing).
Also, I would like to keep only 1 cpu and mobo, and it would be sweet to keep the x5650 as it has full 2 years of warranty...

Here is one set of settings (x5670 at 187 bclk on the Asus R3E), which I replicated on the G1 without luck...
CPU ratio: 22
bclk: 187
PCIE: 102
RAM: 1874
UClk: Auto
QPI Link: Auto (3375)
CPU differ. ampl.: Auto
CPU clock skew: Auto
IOH clock skew: Auto
Load line calibration: 0%
CPU voltage OCP: Enable
CPU PWM freq: Auto
CPU voltage: 1.336
CPU PLL voltage: 1.812
QPI/DRAM core volt: 1.287
DRAM Bus volt: 1.51
IOH volt: 1.111
IOH PCIE volt: 1.508
ICH volt: 1.111
ICH PCIE volt: Auto
C1E support and SpeedStep enable, C-State disable.
I tried for sure higher CPU voltage (offset up to +0.3), different RAM, UCLK and QPI link speed, all the Load Line Calibration but all with no luck...

So does anyone have some experience with the G1 or at least some advice for me? I don't need to reach 200 bclk on the x5650, but 180-190 would be nice... I know the CPU can do it...

Thanks a lot!

Good luck. The Gigabyte boards are a PITA and never clock as high as other boards. I couldn't get past 4.2Ghz with a Xeon X5670 no matter what I tried. Sold all my Gigabyte stuff for that reason.

That would be a blck of 190... I would be more than happy with it!

After following this thread for weeks, I was hopping for you to have some good advice for me ^^

Good advice? Sell all but the X5650 and get a Sabertooth

Also, you said the Gigabyte will do 166bclk. The X5670 has 24X multi, giving you 4Ghz! Plenty for what you're doing..

My Gigabyte X58A-UD3R is currently running bclk of 221 with an E5620@4,2GHz. I guess this is the famous exception

No, an E5620 is a lower power quad with lots of head room. Not like a hexcore that's harder to get high bclk @ 25X..

Again, sell the R9 and get another GTX 960..
that's no option, the r9 is a killer for computation. Actually I sold one 960 to get space for the r9...

Didn't even thought about that... But if I'm not mistaken, the board won't lock the turbo multi :/

Would you mind sharing your full settings set? Could maybe help me a bit as the bios are the same. Worst case, it could help me with my setup at work (ud3-r with a w3550)

Here's my settings, but i think they are of no use to you because the only voltages I changed are CPU vcore and QPi PLL voltage. These voltages shouldn't have anything to do with bclk overclocking ability. The images were taken with a potato, so their quality is utter crap.

Thanks a lot! Well you never know, sometimes there is this one setting you changed and don't remember anymore. In this way I can counter-check all my settings!
As for the quality: it's more than readable, I don't need 4k resolution for bios settings
