I was asking because from what I understand in a thread on EVGA the 1.0 revision of my board doesn't accept it. Am I or are they wrong?

Why is there no info about the L5639 Xeon on the net? It's not even listed at Intel Ark ? I'm thinking if I can't use it for my EVGA I'd try to install it on my Asrock X58 Extreme. Asrock's CPU support list doesn't even show the L5639.

It was made specially for a large OEM, it basically falls right between the L5638 and L5640.

How would one of these chips work and OC in a gigabyte EX58-UD5? Assuming antec kuhler 920 for cooler.

They aren't temp limited from what I can tell. You'll run into the TDP limit or your board's BCLK limit long before you run the silicon out.

FWIW my "other" rig of this is running an Asetek 920 as well (AMD 8150 water cooler LOL) and it has no issue mitigating the heat on Silent mode.

i am still lost in why it wouldnt work.
And are u saying it doesnt accept it cuz its not listed as one of the cpu's?

As long as it supports 1 family member of that cpu... meaning another low voltage gulftown on the xeon side, id say your golden.
If it supports no xeons, then it could be the manufactor blocking all Xeon's.
However i do recall trying out a Xeon on that EVGA and not having any issues...
i stepped up from that board to my E759.

However i have NEVER seen any company do that except Intel.
Some intel boards force u to use the listed cpu's and wont accept anything else.

id expect ud get very good results, as the UD5 is a beast.
However Shmee... u asked how will your OC work... when u know best every chip is YMMV!

But your board is possibly the best Overclocking board standing with the E759 classified and Asus R2E.
The UD7 was one of my testing boards along with the other 2 i mentioned up top.

Ya, obviously all chips vary I actually gave the UD5 to a friend, he is currently running a 920 D0, I am consulting him on whether it would be a worthwhile upgrade.

I did not know that my board was still held in such high esteem, I know there was an EX58A version, which had the Sata 3 and some other features, but mine was of the first gen on X58. I do seem to remember it got an editors choice (silver i think) award for the x58 series on AT.

I seem to remember I had good results on my 920 D0. I could do 21x200, which worked pretty well as a solid OC. I believe I got the 21x multi because the board supported a locked turbo. That was 4.2GHz, which seemed to be the highest completely stable point for my chip.

The answer I got on the EVGA forums is in here. If you say it will work, I'm curious now if it would. :hmm:

How then can I tell if it works for my Asrock? CPU support list for Asrock X58 Extreme

Looks like my EVGA won't support it due to being a revision 1.0 board. Booo. heh

Q: How can you tell if your Asrock board will support <Insert Processor Here>:
A: If the CPU fits in the socket, it supports it. If it doesn't happen to boot, then by god, your BIOS might not support it. Hell, there might not be a released BIOS revision that does support it. But fear not, Asrock support is head and shoulders aboves just about any other motherboard manufacturer out there, and if you email them, they will probably send you an email back with a BIOS revision that does actually support whatever CPU that you want. Hell, they'd probably happily send you a BIOS to support your AMD processor in an Intel motherboard!

This is from personal experience.

(EVGA otoh would tell you to screw off and open your wallet for a damn whole new mobo)

I'd be willing to wager it would, with the latest BIOS.

u see the problem i see now is the board might have not gotten the bios microcode update at all to support it.

They Discontinued the 1.0A and made all the users with 1.0A RMA for a 1.1 so it would have westmere support.

Meaning if the board doesnt natively support westmere.. it wont support gulftown, so btry might be out of luck.

I have an EVGA FTW3 and the CPU is recognized no problem.

This is a completely different board.... it looks near the same however different.

Btry try looking up XFX X58.. see if there is a bios update for that board with westmere support.

They were made by the same OEM Foxconn when they came out.

^ see its your board wearing xfx tags.

I just contacted both AsRock, & EVGA via support ticket to inquire about using this Xeon. EVGA just got back to me and replied this:

"Although this CPU has not been tested and is not on or compatibility list there is no need for a different revision. You only need to update the bios on this board in order to use the latest CPU for your board. Please follow the link i have provided below in order to flash your board to the latest bios."

I already have the latest bios. This doesn't seem like someone informed about the compatibility. I am suspicious. Reason why I say this is because before I contacted EVGA Support I was linked to a post in my thread, I started a day earlier, on the EVGA forums that had a response from a former EVGA bios engineer saying that the board needed to be revision 1.1

Now that puts this Xeon purchase on hold until I hear back from Asrock. If Asrock supports the Xeon it won't be a total loss cause if it doesn't work in the EVGA I'll just drop it into my Asrock X58 Extreme, which could use a few extra cores for my Microsoft Expressions Encoder projects

Thanks all for the help,

Cheers

OK so whats a better motherboard for overclocking the L5639 the Gigabyte G1 Sniper Or the MSI Big Bang Xpower??
I already have 2 MSI x58 gd45 but want an extreme motherboard and use the gd45's for backups.

I can't find a tdp override option... also, it seems my board doesn't like anything past bclk 220 and vcore 1.31, but that puts me at a comfortable 3956.67 mhz and I'm still under 50C

Nice OC & thanks for checking on TDP bypass.. I have to wonder if they stealth removed it in one of the BIOS updates.

My BCLK also tops out at 220 when isolated, but my processor doesn't want anything over 210-212(x18) without wanting tons of extra voltage. I'm pretty topped out on my cooling as well, hovering right around 70c with an older H50 and super cramped Antec mid case

I'm kinda curious to see how it would perform with hyperthreading disabled, I'm going to test that next. also, how do you adjust the multiplier on this mobo?

I finally got all of my memory in and to say I'm lost is a bit of an understatement. :-\

Here are some screenshots of what my BIOS looks like:

Any thoughts on what I should do? This is my first REAL attempt at OCing and I'm hoping that I don't screw this up lol.
