I think I will grab either a x5650 or x5660 on ebay, see how it compares to my 980X. The 5660 is actually lower price, is one generally better than the other at OC?

Each one gives higher multipliers, which is why the x5670 is the sweet spot generally. all core multi goes from 22 to 23 with the x5660 if I recall, same thing with the x5670 at 24.

IIRC, Nehalem does better on odd multipliers. Is this still true on the westmere xeons? Also, is the x5670 worth it over the two mentioned? I think I read earlier that some of the lower numbers actually OC'd better than some of the higher models like the x5690.

Doesn't matter on these xeons. Max multi on X5650 is 23, max you can set all cores is 22, and at 200 bclk, single thread performance is near 3770k. It's harder to get 200 on the higher multi chips like the X5670 tho. I guess it all depends on what you'll be doing with it. I find the X5650 will do 200 bclk easily (has more OC headroom with less heat). At $35 you can't do much better performance/dollar.

I went ahead and ordered an X5660, found one for $37. I figured the extra multi may help for just 2 dollars more.

I've had boards that cant do a full 200 on the blck which is why I like to go a bit higher, my nephews build I did with a 10 buck e5640 is like that and only hits 181 on the board.

The x5660 I had in my gf's system could do 4.4ghz on all cores but required 1.35v, which I feel is pretty good.

Hey Burpo, I recently purchased an X5650 after reading through this thread. I followed your photos on page-64 and everything is running well! However, have your settings changed since then? I noticed you said "dropped CPU voltage from .30 to .22" -- is that .22500?

CPU Type | Intel Xeon X5650 @ 4.4 GHz
CPU Cooling | Noctua NH-U14S

It has arrived. Stress testing at 4.3 GHz now. 187x23, RAM at 8x multi, so about 1500MHz. Running 3x4GB corsair vengeance. Seems good so far, at Normal Vcore + ~1.128. I also added new RAM to the X79 rig, which is memtesting 4x4 Patriot viper @ 2133MHz. So far so good. The 4930k is currently at 3.9 GHz.

Forgive me for this paragraph: I am Spanish and I have just regrouped in this forum. I have not seen a section of presentations, I read and write thanks to the translator.

But I have decided to register as I liked what I read in several post "Burpo". Do not despise anyone!

But despite seeing how you treat the subject of ECC ram memory. I'm not sure if my Asus p6x58d-e board is compatible with this type of memory, having in the future an intel xeon?

I currently have 2 * 6gb of ram. I had on the way a module of 4GB of 20 €, But I just canceled seeing in this forum that my plate can with 48gb of ram. Now I want to order an 8gb module but I do not know if I ask for ECC or NO ECC. If my badge is compatible I prefer to take advantage of that.

I am starting in the process of batch and video photos and I want to put the maximum memory to my equipment.

I currently have i7 950 stock. I'm going to build a good disiapador and an Intel Xeon to make it OC. I want to enjoy
Recommended x5670-55 $ x5650-40 $ x5675-80 $ w3680-105 $

I want performance / price ratio and seeing REAL differences. I'm not interested in being the king of the test.

Sorry for the post so great!

Yes, most 8gb modules will work. They can be ECC as long as it is not Registered RAM. Any of the CPU's you listed will work.

I would not use ECC RAM since the board has no provision for it. 1333 or 1600 doesn't matter much.

Don't buy the cheap "AMD only" memory.

I'm still using X5650 @ 4.2Ghz but any of these 95 watt Xeons ( X5650 X5660 X5670 ) will work.

I'm so frustrated on getting 24GB of ram detected that I'm thinking about abandoning this build. I was using the Asus P6T-Deluxe with my X5660 and 24GB of ram. It worked fine with 24GB for about 1 yr and it suddenly it was only able to detect 16GB. I put up with the missing 8GB for a year and the again, the amount of ram detected dropped to 8GB. I tried reseating the ram, CPU, checked for bent pins, wiped the contacts of the CPU with alcohol, tried a number of different ram settings. No bueno. I ended up buying another mobo, Asrock X58 Extreme. The exact same issue happened.
I tried with only 3 sticks of ram plugged in and it only detects 8GB. The slots that work and don't work changes depending on the number of sticks of ram I have plugged in, so the issue isn't associated with a specific slot. This suggests the issue isn't with the CPU pins.

Many problems concerning the triple channel RAM setup on X58 have to do with over tightening the CPU cooler & backing plate.
Seems the traces between layers of the board can get crushed and then you lose a channel.

Despite cleaning the contacts with alcohol ... Try cleaning them with a eraser and tell me if it works.

I was just pointing out that some X58 memory problems can be attributed to over tightening the cooler/ back plate. I don't know if that's your problem.

X58 days are numbered. I switched out my old rig a couple weeks ago for a Gateway tower with I5 & promptly dropped in an E3 1280v2 Xeon I got for cheap, and this is how it runs stock (compared to your score in pic). It sips about 46watts under load & I'm using stock Gateway HSF.

No heat build up in corner of my desk anymore & PC cost me less than a 6600k..
X58 stuff for sale.
