Well the Xeon L5639 is bought and soon to be on it's way. Hope this will hold me over for a bit. Will post overclocking results when I can.

I'm kinda curious to see how it would perform with hyperthreading disabled, I'm going to test that next. also, how do you adjust the multiplier on this mobo?

AI tweaker - CPU Ratio Setting (up to 18x) , DRAM, UCLK, and QPI multipliers are also in this section

Well I am finally getting my parts together for my build. Coming from a quad core 2 so this should be sweet.

I found a great MB a Gigabyte X58A-OC. It will be great to see how well the L5839 clocks on this

Does anyone have any ideas on RAM? I am looking at some low power G.SKILL Sniper 3 x 4GB ram set. Does this chip need real fast RAM to clock fast?

Thanks in advance
Dan

ram ratios on the X58 allows u to get by with moderate ram.

however... my advice..

1. Go for the most capacity you can afford.

2. Go for the fastest speed in MHZ which holds the best cost / value ratio...
example if 1600mhz is a lot more expensive then 1333mhz...
get the 1333mhz... if its like 1 or 2 dollars difference.. get the 1600mhz.

3. Go for the lowest timings possible you can afford again... (this value can skyrocket Ram prices... avoid the really expensive tight timing ram tho...)
example.. timings are shown via 4 numbers... 8-8-8-11 the last number is typically double digits.

Do not look at ram which requires more voltage then 1.6V
1.65 is alright.. however you really want 1.5V ram...

On a side note, do people still overclock their uncore?

Well guys, I didn't disappear. The BIOS on this SR-2 is garbage and I've been about ready to put it in the trash twice.

The good news is that I think I've got my issues sorted out.

Also, in case anyone else thinks about trying it, it appears you cannot switch a live Windows 7 install from X58 to SR-2 (5520). The only thing I can think of is NUMA, but something was stopping me dead in my tracks even at stock settings.

ETA: I think I'm overloading my PSU. I know a few guys here picked up SR-2s. What wattage PSUs are you running?

for anyone thinking about jumping in on this, thought I might add a related FYI: I used to run an ES Xeon 5640 - it is a failed 6-core, so 'only' 4C/8T but still has the full 12MB 6-core L3 cache. It ran flawlessly both in my Sabertooth & my UD7 Rev.2.

Neither mobos would play nice tho with ECC nor ECC+REG ram!

what are the rest of your specs?

I have a friend who runs 2x 6-cores (stock is 3.46) he runs them anywhere between 3.8-4.2. 24GB + 460GTX + 1-2 SSDs, 4 HDDs all of a 775W TT TP XT. Though its too close for his comfort so he wants to upgrade to a 1kw PSU

-2 L5639s on the SR-2 which seems to be more power hungry than other SMP boards.
-2 Corsair H60S in push/pull
-2 Radeon 6950s
-2 HDs
-Blu Ray and SD card reader
-ASUS Eonar STX
-Counting the fans on the Corsairs, I'm at 9 fans

I think my real problem is that the PSU I'm using is a quad rail, 1 and 2 are 22a, 3 and 4 are 25a. That allows for a max of 264w on 1 and 2.

I could be chasing my tail, but the machine is stable stripped down. I only get crashes when it's fully assembled.

& which PSU? Sorry, if your 'dually' link in your sig is supposed to point to your build, the link isn't working

No, I think Anandtech did away with the rigs feature a long time ago.

It's one of the HEC 850TS power supplies that Tiger Direct had for $30 AMIR.

ok so a 850W unit.. mm.. my friend has 775... I reckon its your cards that make your rig use more.

You.. you only paid $30? :hmm: D:

Yea, I bought two. It was a good deal. Had no issues driving one Xeon on an X58 motherboard in basically the same configuration.

If you're surprised by the price on the PSU, you'd have a heart attack at what I gave for the SR-2.
