Dan.... look at the multi.... its NOT a L5639

His has a 20x multi...

vs 18x which is a real....

I dont know how the hell he got a +2 multi..
But you know what else is confusing the hell out of me?

That Xeon is a black label... which tells me it should also be UNLOCKED on top hence why he's getting a 20x multi.
Look at the Intel Logo's... I dont think CPU-Z has gone though a label upgrade in the programing.
The Top chip also looks like an older chip... (black label Xeon + unlocked)

Im guessing its a inhouse ES which made it though circulation somehow, as those wont report ES in cpu-z but wear a confidental tag on the IHS and have there multi's unlocked.
Or the Board is somehow tricking itself to think the cpu is unlocked... which i cant see how its possible... and is giving him +2 when its not possible.

Its not an es chip its normal and shows the word L5639 right on the cpu.
I didnt have a 20 multi till I updated bios and set every thing to on and changed the Bclk to 200.
it only stays at 4.0Ghz while Im not pushing it full load soon as it goes full load it drops down to 3.6-3.8Ghz??
I got a freeze up last night after running prime95 for a couple hours.
No blue screen just a total lock up of the system.
I dont think it was the cpu getting to hot at all I think it could of gone higher 4.2 maybe 4.5Ghz cause I touched the heat sink block on the 212 evo and it was cool almost cold to the touch but the north bridge heatsink was super super hot,so hot I burn the shit out of my finger when touching it to check for temps..
There is no way of changing the voltages for cpu volts at all its like its totally blocked.
It some how ups the volts on its own so explain that one..
I will have my wife take a few screen shots of my bios for every one and post them when she gets home tonight.

Ok, that explains it. I was able to duplicate that using Throttle Stop and the High Performance power profile.

FWIW, you don't really want it working like this. It still clocks down under multi threaded load, so all you're doing is burning the chip up at idle. Better to let Speedstep work as intended. I'll take pics of the BIOS settings I'm using for you.

Is that the characteristics of the Xeon L5639, or the motherboard?

My i7 920 in my EVGA 760 stays at 21x196 at idle and load while UT3 is loaded.

I would guess it's specific to the chip.

Thanks to those who replied about the ECC registered RAM. I'll post back if I'm able to secure an X58 mobo, L5639 CPU and ECC registered RAM to confirm if this combo is working.

Your 920 doesn't have 6 cores either.

These chips, and AFAIK all the hex cores, have multiple levels of turbo based on the threads.

It'll go up to +2x on all 6 cores. +3x on 4 cores. +4x on 2 cores.

I'm just saying one can't really say things are true to a series if they are true with one chip. Now if the chip isn't tested in every possible way it's hard to say that it's the same throughout the series. I might be wrong. When I was running my 920 at stock with all motherboard features turned on I remember seeing a 22 multiplier. IIRC it was only with one core.

EDIT: One thing is true about the 5639, if I leave my PC on all night in a room the Xeon doesn't warm that room up, hah

I am quite impressed with the Xeon L5639. For the money you can't beat this little work horse. I have been working with an old Xeon Quad Core and a GT240 video card with 96 Cuda cores. DVD Architect Pro takes so long to render I started using software that utilized the GPU as well. Below is a pic showing my old Quad core rendering a DVD assisted by cuda & it still takes 40 minutes..

Same video below rendered in Sony DVD Architect Pro which only uses the CPU took 11 min.

That's a worth while upgrade, one that I'm glad I did. I have seen my multiplier go to 18.5 with Turbo enabled & volts go as high as 1.40. Temps as high as 60's but all that is within specs. I'm probably going to get another one along with an Evga X58 Micro 121-BL-E756-TR to upgrade an Acer Mini Tower in the back room. It's a great chip..

Indeed! I won't have to change out my main rig for another 4-5 yrs now. I just have to settle my 6 or more core gaming rig itch.. UE3 engine is still a CPU hog, even for a i7 920 @ 4.1Ghz.. it almost peaks some of the cores, 96% utilization

lol...

ive been doing stuff like that in sub 10 min when using a SSD as cache while rendering for serveral years now..

now u see why i keep telling people gulftown is a blackhole..

Nothing is worthy of a value in upgrade.
Almost everything is a sidegrade... with very little incline...

I've been doing editing in Vegas pro and rendering on the GPU is much faster if the app supports it.

But most will see a nice jump from a quad to hexcore just for that type of work.

For the money this is a great chip just seems you need a good board to really push it.

And totally agree about the gulftown blackhole.

How soon will Haswell E be out? I am considering either a 970 or a W3680 for my 1366 760A1 game machine. What makes me curious is that with some cores almost at 100% will the extra 2 cores lower the load across all 6 cores? As it is, all 4 ARE being utilized, and if it doesn't then that means the investment would of been better somewhere else. On the same token if I decide on one and it clocks to ~ 4.5Ghz then it'll be worth it.

On page 7, there was some talk about the the use of ECC Registered RAM with this CPU and X58's motherboards.

However people sometimes confuse simple ECC RAM with ECC Registered RAM.

So, could someone please confirm that ECC registered memory can indeed be used with this Xeon CPU on a single socket X58 motherboard ?

It should work. I used ECC Reg with a Xeon on x58 before.
http://forums.2cpu.com/showthread.php?t=96535

As stated previously though, I never could confirm if the ECC was working or not, but the system operated just fine.

4.3-4.2ghz might be a more reasonable estimate btry.

1. I dont expect any 970 + W3680 + 975X to be in perfect NIB condition.
Unless ur going after a NIB.

2. The stress on the board is quite intense when u get to 4ghz territory on gulftown.
This is why there are VRM frequencies to help supply voltage more constant, and other things which the higher end boards have.

3. This isnt Sandy Bridge where even your grandmother can overclock it.
This is Gulftown, you will get lost in bios...

in all my years with gulftown and my board.. i still dont understand what 1/3rd of bios options does, but i know its important cuz when i start monkeying with it, I BSOD...

I've got a decent board to do it with, I think. I can cross check the board with another 920 that I've ran stock since day 1 and see if the board has a limit. Of course this wouldn't be conclusive but might help give me an idea with things. I seen an OC.Net member with his Xeon 3680 @ 4.8Ghz pushing 1.4vcore on a GB X58A-UD3R so I'm thinking that would be a cheaper route and just a semi drop-in (board mods) rather than a platform upgrade, money pit. Something to scratch my play itch with.

3d Mark is samething i dont like(far from real world). Will the CPU will bottleneck modern VGA like 7970/680/780 in high res. I will use it eventually for workload (VM, Autocad, Solidworks) but i like to play from time to time, but what i consider now is how fast exactly is this CPU. So if any one can post same Fraps Shots with game that you already have installed its ok. Also is there anyone using LSI 9260i/40/20/11 and is there any problems with it ?

Doubtful. Still have old faithful as a LAN party rig (i7 920 @ 4GHz), and I don't notice much if any difference when running my 7970GE in it vs. a 4770K @ 4.55GHz.

What coolers are you guys running with this chip? I have a pair of them and an SR2 and wanted to get a 212+, but I figured I would ask the people who already own them what their temps are like OC'd.
