This is interesting though, it's roughly equal to a Haswell 4770K@4.2-4.3 and faster than all AMD chips posted thusfar. Probably about on par with the infamous FX9590.

how about single threaded vs 4770k or 4670k?

Well, what do you think......You're in a thread directly centered on 6 core chips that are three generations old asking about single threaded performance. In other words, most likely trying to stir up crap....GTFO. I apologize if you were genuinely asking that question for informational purposes.

LOL....I just noticed you were one of the ones who ordered one of these. Disregard all except the last sentence above, it obviously was for informational purposes. My apologies. haha

This chip looks real cool from here

Now what about 1366 motherboard, what is still out there that you guys would recommend for this chip?

I mean one that overclocks well, and is durable, but does not cost an arm and a leg?

Thanks

~22-30% perhaps based on my W3520 vs. the similarly clocked 4770K's in the Handbrake thread. Not enough i5's listed to draw a decent estimate...~15% it looks like off hand.
I should mention I'm speaking per core performance, true single thread performance isn't going to vary between the i5 and i7 as hyperthreading won't come into play. Go look at Balla's unreal scores in the ArtMoney thread as evidence of the i5's pure single thread performance. I about guarantee you won't see an i7 pull that off unless they disable hyperthreading, as they probably won't be able to pull off such clock speeds with it enabled.

ok so I won't be very disappointed for this as a replacement for my 3570k then since it should still be significantly better at multi threading. I couldn't afford a new motherboard (fried last one) for my 3570k so I sold it and am going with this to match my gtx 770

Well it is old tech as someone mentioned its a couple of generations old now. If you have an X58 based board already I think it's a great upgrade if you can use the threads. If you go to anandtechs bench you can compare it to any CPU, this is identical to an i7-970 if you clock it at 3.2 GHz.

B-b-but a couple of these in a used SR-2 would make for a poor man's rich render farm. Must stop drooling...

I hope this new toy OCs well on my good ol' P6X58D Premium. 200 Bclk would be nice to replace my i7 920 @ 4GHz.

Shouldn't be a problem since you know the board can already do 200BCLK just like mine.

Some power numbers according to my APC battery backup:

Idle: 163W
Full CPU load: 241W

CPU is 3.2GHz @1.25V
1x5850 & 1x5830
1x80GB Intel SSD & 1x1TB Seagate 7200RPM

Corsair 850W HX

You guys are making OCing a spectator sport.

it was always a spectator sport!!!!

Intel's the one trying to make it into a pharm party.

do you recommend that over the Foxconn renaissance II?

The most solid board u'll find right now is probably the Gigabyte X58.

That MSI also looks pretty good.
The mosfets (military layout) and color layout, its probably when MSI started to please the OC community.
The 108 dollar aspect is also very hard to ignore, almost too difficult to ignore...
(dammit terry... u made me want to get one and setup a VM box cuz it would only cost less then 300 dollars for 6 gulftown cores)

If you want a lasting board tho, which can handle u abusing it, and still make u a sandwitch, its the giggy tho.

Welcome to gulftown you guys... ur now offically caught in what i call the blackhole of our hobby.
Reason being.. ur going to have a very hard time justifying an upgrade over gulftown.
Your going to have a very hard time also leaving gulftown... :\

When did MSI stop catering to the OC community? I had some hot rod MSI boards back in the slot 1 days.

right prior to the military class.

The IP35 was a great clocker.. however it was terrible in endurance.
Also had one on the nastiest Vdroop, and half the vregs other vendors went with.
(asus and giggy's strong point is they never gimp'd out on the 12-16phase mosfet design.. giggy even took it up one and went 24 design on the UD7's.)

MSI had a methodology b4 they started seeing us at CES @ the XS parties.
They didnt feel a board needed to be beefy... just a great clocker.
Then we all yelled at MSI, saying no... great board meant beefy board.

So a few months after that, they told us they were releasing a military class to please the overclocking community, where the board should outlast the CPU even.

:whiste:

I never got to play with one, so i cant feedback on it tho.
But according to the specs and stats, it should be a solid board.

Cool.

Touching on your other points from your earlier post, I know I'm probably going to be on this setup for a while. I posted somewhere else, it reminds me an awful lot of the 1.6LV Xeons at 3.2GHz back in the mid P4 days. I was on that rig for over 5 years.

Maybe I'll trade up to 3930K once they get reasonable. Or maybe an 8 core chip will magically appear on Ebay like this one did.
