A ha! Now we're getting somewhere.

That's not core temp. That's VRM temp.
That's why it goes up and down so quickly, as power phases go on and off line based on C states.

Looks like lm-sensors should be able to read the Intel core temp diode with the coretemp-isa module.
OK, I tried to do what is on these pages:http://askubuntu.com/questions/15832/how-do-i-get-the-cpu-temperature

And I get the below:
mark@mark-dual-5639:~$ sensors
nouveau-pci-0c00
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: +42.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +110.0°C)

mark@mark-dual-5639:~$

No ISA adapter for 0 and 1

What is the breaking point for these chips before they start to throttle down clocks?
I've seen different numbers online

Because these are low voltage chips the throttle temp is lower, like maybe 70oC. Someone in this thread pulled it using a tool in Windows.

Tj Max is 79 Celsius.. with a good Fan & H/S you should only see 70 under a continuous heavy load..

Depending which board you have you can clock 214 bclk before it starts throttling.. Mine runs real good between 207 - 210.. no need to push it past that..

Burpo,

that is a sick overclock! What mobo / RAM are you using? I may need your assistance when I get my cpu in a day or two....

Asus P6X58D Premium, Coollink Corator H/S & Fan, 12Gb Patriot 1600mhz ram, GTX 570.. It chews thru data pretty good.. Dropped 2 movies totaling 4 hrs 11 min into Freemake and it rendered a DVD ISO in under 15 min, and never broke a sweat, temps in the 50's at up to 1.5 volts.

See above, TRUE 120's. Also, this is a 6 vore, not a quad core, so you can't compare temps. Also a Xeon, so the extra links use some power.

Running 68c now.

Nah you may be very little familiar with an 920 coz, its rated at 130w tpd @ stock vs yours little hexy @ 60w, second thing mine is overclocked heavily at 1.36vcore with HT which adds extra heat. So yeah, I'm waiting mine and then we'll see temps with noctua d14 using that chip.

Excuse me, I have a 920, and 2 950's. My 950's run 4 ghz, the only reason my 920 is at 3.6, is the motherboard is not as good.

see sig. Also, that 68 may not be accurate, as that display I learned was VRM temp.

Again, you're comparing apples to oranges. Please just stop.

Little is right. L5639 is 32nm, yours is 45nm. That can play into multiple factors but the bottom line is you can't directly power usage between these two chips.

totally agreed.

Even comparing between a standard gulftown and one of these xeon is almost as bad.

Even if both are at 32nm.

The chips are made for different target audiences.

And I still have not found software to even give me the CPU temps on ubuntu. All the programs I tried in web searches will not work.

I get "dependency is not satisfiable" when trying to install.

Are you just using stable sources, or do you have testing turned on as well?

ETA: This may be Debian-specific and not for Ubuntu. I haven't used Linux in a while.

How's the power consumption? Anybody got a killawatt and is willing to post some results on idle/load?

Mine was just shipped and I'm interested to see if it'll actually consume less power than a regular old quad 9xx at the same clocks with it being 32nm and carrying the "L" specification.

Hello,
I have been following this thread with great interest.I really need an upgrade from my Pentium E2140 with 2gb ram and this looks like it has some wonderful potential as a low budget build.

I congratulate all who were successful in getting the l5639 to work and overclock in their motherboards. It looks like the motherboard is the possible unknown factor in this setup due to processor bios support or the motherboard support of the l5639 dual qpi links.(please correct me if I am wrong here)

From this thread the confirmed working motherboard list is:

eVGA SR-2 Classified
any Asus P6T
Asus X58 Sabertooth
Asus P6X58-E WS
Asus P6X58D Premium
MSI X58A-GD45 (Wish I found this thread when you guys were buying them for 108.)
Gigabyte X58-UD3R

I found some information on another site where enthusiasts were putting the l5640 es chips in single processor motherboards a few years ago so this list would be a good bet for a working motherboard with the l5639:

Asus P6T - latest bios (version 1303)
Asus P6T Deluxe v1 - Bios 2101
Asus P6T Deluxe v2 - Bios 1003
Asus P6T6 WS Revolution - Bios 0803
Asus Rampage II GENE - Bios 1202 or higher
Asus X58 Sabertooth
Asus Z8NA-D6C - 9.02 bios
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Rev. 1.0 - Bios F4
Gigabyte GA-X58A UD3R Rev 2 BIOS version FC
Gigabyte EX58-UD5 version 1.0 - Bios F12
Gigabyte GA-X58-USB3 - Bios F2
ASRock X58 Extreme - Bios, 2.5

I can post the link if someone wants.I'm not sure if it is frowned upon or not to post links to other forums.

If anyone has any other boards that are compatible please post them.

I have a few questions if anyone could answer them I would appreciate it.

Did anyone have to use a quad core processor such as an i7-920 to flash the motherboard bios to the latest available version to be able to use the l5639 in their board?

If not what bios version was on your board when you installed the l5639?

Has anyone come across any new old stock or refurbished motherboard from the compatible board list from a good vendor for a fair price?
or is used the only current option?

Thanks and keep up the great work.

P.S.
Has anyone tried the Battlefield 4 demo with one of these setups?I would love to see what frame-rates this setup would get.

The chip should work in most any high end X58 board (any bios). If you want to work this chip (OC heavily) pick your board according to the power section. The more phases the better, Asus has 16+2 Phase Power Design, and others may have 12 or more. These will be the easiest to OC with stability. Next to that, decide if you want USB 3 and Sata 3. Decide whether you may eventually want to run SLI or Crossfire to see if you need 2 PCI-E slots. Boards are still available new or refurbed for around $200-$249. Used still brings $150+ on ebay.

Next & very important is cpu cooling. Whether you want to go liquid or just HSF is your choice, but these low power chips work well with a good heat sink & fan.

Use fast ram for best OC.. 1600 or better

Use a good power supply.. 450 watts or better..

Boards are still available, refurbs usualy without backplates. Here's a few I found on ebay..

Nothing wrong with getting a used board. Just be sure of what you want.. Search "X58 motherboard" on ebay..

Good Luck!

This is dangerous advice. Not all X58 boards work with Xeon chips. If you review this thread, there is an EVGA board that needs a hardware mod.

The incompatibility stems from the dual QPI links. The rest of your advice, however, is sound.

I ordered this chip and should receive it tonight. I'm running an EVGA x58 SLI-LE board, flashed to the newest BIOS. I plan on testing this tonight, and will post my results as soon as I am able....fingers crossed!
