Any tips for reducing power consumption on this chip? I've underclocked it to 133x12 and turned off HT. It still drew about 120w. Turning off the cores didn't make much difference.
Is that the reading for the whole computer by using something like a kill-a-watt?
It's hard to tell if that is bad or not. We need more info.

Make sure the bios is set up correctly. You may want to load defaults, save, exit, and then go back in and check things again. Make sure power saving features are all enabled. Do not increase voltages. I don't think shutting off hyperthreading will save you much so I would leave it enabled.

Do not use an older power hungry video card. The Radeon 4870 for example did not idle down and save power when not being used in games. Any gaming card from around that rough time frame was a power hog. If you aren't gaming but using it as a server get a newer, but low end card for basic video.

If you can, use a more efficient power supply also. If you have something really old it's efficiency will not be that great.

I am typing this from a i7 920 C0 machine that is overclocked right now and it's at around 105 watts idling. The video card is a V3900 Firepro, which is basically a 6570, so a low end Radeon which doesn't pull much power. The power saving features are enabled. It isn't overclocked a lot, just 166 BLCK at stock voltage. The power supply may be 80+ rated, but it's not high end.

Your machine should be able to do a bit better now that I think about it more. Just check what I said above and you should be able to improve a little.

Purchased one of these for $75 off ebay a few weeks back thanks to this thread.

Best cpu upgrade ever price wise lol.

Got mine running on my old asus rampage 2 extreme @212 mhz blck.

I can get upto 216 blck but thats not stable no matter how much volt i add.
Might be the board limit not cpu, my sound goes all weird and cross fire stops working so think the pci-e is getting out of spec but adding more volt and playing with the clock skews changes nothing.

I have all the c-states eist etc. on to get the 20x multplier.
Needed 1.24v for 212x18 on all 6 cores but need 1.36v to get 212x20 on 2 cores....Using watercooling so temps are fine.
cpu-z is the only program that shows the wrong cpu....

Cinebench R15 : 902
Cinebench 11.5 : 9.85

Btw i noticed that when i set my power options in windows to anything but high performance the multplier would not go above 16.
Yeah, it's kinda of a playing with it thing maybe.

I've gotten a stable setup here now at @215 and throttles in reality if try a higher multiplier, but still better than my old 920 I ran for years for the price.

Still playing around myself, have gotten it to boot into windows a few times at blck 220, have all my C's off off and running stable 6 cores at 215 atm at any rate with a 16X multi.

I'm happy with it at any rate can maybe build a internet TV for the bedroom with the old 920, or give it to the wife but she's still happy with my old 9650 and hates when I change her stuff, still using one of my old Rampage boards and works for her.

She just freak out when I'm changing things and have temporary implosions on things now and then

I've had this thing up to 4.2 on two cores, but it throttled badly and did worse for me at any rate than leaving 6 on at 3.43 and having blck at 215, it always went back to 16X on this board, so I just went for the highest I could do there when running Prime or ITB on it.

It's down again now was just messing a bit.

It's new and I'm playing was all.

How are you getting x20 Multiplier on 6 cores ? Must be my MOBO, if I go above 16X here it throttles anyway so have been trying to get the best out of a 16X.

Might have to look for a used Rampage II Extreme and put the ole 920 back in this P6T7 and build a new side computer

Sorry silly me.

Off to play some more :whiste:

Whenever I've used two cores and have had it at that my benchies drop do have been trying to just push the 16X blck here *shrug*

That looks a lot better.

I'm at 210 x 18x @ 1.24v, turbo to 20X (2 cores) same. But I'm running my RAM pretty slow (~1300) and loose (9-9-9) because I have 6x2GB.

Stable in ITB and Prime and FCP and gaming.

Got this when setting the qpi to slow mode but its useless for normal use.
http://valid.canardpc.com/699w91
Cinebench r15 score of 930
Tried 3dmark but fps was so low i stopped the benchmark lol.

Cant get 215 blck or higher stable with normal qpi no matter what i try.

Supply of these chips have dried up on ebay & prices are much higher now. Some going for more than $150.. Congrats to those that grab'd these early.. They're hard to beat for the money..

just got a second 660 ti and these are my firestrike results;
http://www.3dmark.com/fs/1429571

graphics score; 11,445
physics score; 12,511

the core of my system costs less than $500 (cpu+mobo+gpu+gpu) where others are spending $1000+ on systems that don't perform as well (at least at stock speeds) and I thought that was amazing

I'm seriously tempted to buy another one of these and slap it in a dual CPU board and migrate a few things out then put the 920 back on this Mobo and move it elsewhere

Yeah, there is one guy has about 9 left with buy one now at 129 bucks, but still not bad considering I'd guess.

There's only one board that will let you overclock BCLK like that (EVGA SR-2), and it has a whole host of other problems. Not to mention 200 and + BCLK on the SR-2 is also uncommon - the highest I got mine to was 182, which makes a difference on these chips. My gaming performance on the SR-2 was never what it was on that wonderful MSI X58 that I started with.

I still say that those of us that got in on the initial wave of this with the $100 MSI boards got the deal of the past few years when it comes to Intel processors.

Yeah, I'd started to look at the SR-2s myself, nice setup but really seems would be more of a hassle than tearing everything apart these days and starting from scratch.

I still like getting this at 90 bucks a couple of weeks ago, was a nice little kick up from my old 920.

Put a bid on this last night at 6 dollars, it's risen a bit he he.

Yeah, I'd imagine you have one of those Mountain Mod cases to even use one, that's one wide board.

I have been able to get my 2 E5639's past 2.8 stable, and that has taken months, and still not positive... (on my SR-2) When I had a single it was easy to get 3.4 on my UD3R. But @2.8, they beat my Opteron 6234's in PPD on F@H.

The cheapest available case is the Rose will Blackhawk Ultra. There was a Lian Li case (PC-90) that was nearly the size of a regular ATX case but could accommodate the SR-2. I could never find one.

I might still be cruising for a SR-2 in the future on the side just out of curiosities sake.

I've been running this P6T7 for years, I'm used to dealing with problems a bit. . . ...... ok, more than a bit.

Bookmarked that case for in the event I happen to stumble on one, thanks Terry.

*edit* running a SR-2 in that case almost looks if would qualify more as a Mack truck than a computer though, it makes my Antec 1200 look small

Hi folks,

I have had the parts for this since early Sept, but due to some family issues have not been able to get it up & running.

I have

L5839 CPU
Gigabyte GA-X58A-OC MB
Corsair 650W PS
MSI 7850 GPU
Corsair H100I Cooling System
GSKiLL 3x4 GB Sniper RAM

I have been able to get to 220 BCLK and it was stable. But that was with turbo turned off.

I have it at 180 BCLK with turbo on, but I would like to get to 200 with turbo on.
How high can I set the VTT voltage? The CPU runs nice and cool when I stress test it, will the water cooling enable me to go to like 1.5 V on the VTT?

Thanks in advance

No way you need VTT of 1.5!

I've got all 6 Dimm slots populated, turbo and HT on, and stable at 210 bclk... VTT is 1.3, on air, temps don't break 60c when using all cores to transcode video. Vecore is 1.26 ish in bios and lower in OS.

These CPUs seem to have jumped in price since the original posting (~$125 on ebay now). Are there any comparable Xeons that would also have the overclocking potential? Even the 4 core version would great for price/performance if they could OC to the 3.0-4.0ghz range and were available on the cheap. Unfortunately, my knowledge of Xeon chips is nonexistent so I'm not sure what makes this specific Xeon such a great overclocker (or why it was so cheap).
