these cpus seem to have jumped in price since the original posting (~$125 on ebay now). Are there any comparable xeons that would also have the overclocking potential? Even the 4 core version would great for price/performance if they could oc to the 3.0-4.0ghz range and were available on the cheap. Unfortunately, my knowledge of xeon chips is nonexistent so i'm not sure what makes this specific xeon such a great overclocker (or why it was so cheap).

What's the average stable OC (24/7) the L5639 can do? I'd like to try one on my ASUS P6X58D Premium board but I'm not replacing my i7 920 D0 if it doesnt hit 3.4-3.6GHz (or more).

The chip will likely hit that the limiting factor is usually the board. To hit the bottom end of your range you'd need a board that can run stable at 213 bclk.

Why would he need a board that runs 213 to hit 3.4 ghz? Math doesn't make sense.... 213 x 18 = 3.83.

Turbo gives two bins on all cores at once on this chip... So you get an 18 multi. So to hit 3.4 requires bclk to be 188, and to hit 3.6 requires 200. Both are pretty easy on most boards that support this chip.

The chip gets another bin or two when only running one or two cores at once.

I can transcode video and watch all 6/12 cores sitting at 18 x 210 = 3.78ghz.

Thinking of replacing my L5639 with the X5650. Anybody know if it overclocks as easily? About same price as L5639 now..

http://www.ebay.com/itm/AT806140043...US_Server_CPUs_Processors&hash=item1e84d76908

Picked one up a couple of weeks ago, after missing out on the $70-$80 l5639. I have been following this thread for awhile(I have an i7 950 on an x58 Sabertooth), & was waiting til after xmas to make the jump. When I saw the price jump on the l5639, I looked at other options, & saw the x5650 @ ~$150-$200, & the x5660 @ ~$220-$250, so got a 5650. Paid $150 for it then, see it's come down some...

My 950 was only so-so, ~3.8 @ 1.27v, but always ran pretty warm with a no name air cooler, ~80-84C with HT enabled, ~72-78C disabled running prime or intel burn

Without any tuning other than setting the multi @22, the bclock @ 187, I have a stable 4.13, 12 virtual core, 64C top temp machine. Lowered the v down to 1.25, too

I'm happy as much about the temp improvement as I am with the overclock... (Over 4g FINALLY!!!)

Awesome! This is good to know. I am hoping for the same thing since my P6T motherboard has weird issues applying the turbo multipliers. Hoping to get a nice even 4GHz out of this.

What's a good way to test the memory controller on this chip? The other day I decided to kick the ram from 400 to 533 and had an issue gaming

Increase your qpi voltage a bit unless you already have it set to 1.3-1.35v

Dont forget that these westmere chips dont need the uncore set at twice the ram speed.
I7 900 series need uncore 2x ram but westmere, gulftown only need 1,5x

I'm now using 12gb g.skill ram running at 2124 mhz. with the uncore frequency set at 3400 mhz.

I'm on a board that doesn't offer changing this setting AFAIK. I'm using an Asrock X58 Xtreme - I have a VTT setting..

So at 2.13Ghz what do I need for the Uncore?

Well you guys got me exited and I order one of the x5650. Will most likely see me coming over for advice. I haven't been into the PC oc market for a while.

Coming from a 920 to currently a 990x that I will sell if this chip works out.

Are you planning on swapping out your 990x for this xeon??

Do did you purchase another board for the xeon?
