Thanks for the info Brian! Just what I wanted to hear.. Submitted my offer & got 1!
Hope it works out well I'll be watching, if it works well might look for one myself and sell the L5639

That or hang onto it and sell the 920 perhaps.

It's an X58 motherboard made by MSI for Gateway/Acer. No overclocking is the main drawback. Should work fine with the Xeon 5650

Thanks ! I was looking for a cheap motherboard for 2 E5540's !

This is the PC that board came from.. Gateway doesn't have much info on CPU upgrades, but it's an MSI board. Can be overclocked via bios mod but not much..

I guess I'm a little confused about overclocking the Xeon. The multiplier is locked, but you can increase the BCLK...would this board not allow for it?
I'm looking for a budget build...this CPU is a great price if it can be overclocked, but all
the MB I see listed in this thread are 200-300 (it's a long thread so I may have missed some)

From threads I've read, you can flash it with a modified bios that will allow you to up the multiplier by X 1 (ie. instead of 20X you can set it to 21X). There is no bios revision that allows changing the BCLK.
Bios mod allows you to run a 2.66Ghz chip at 2.80Ghz (21 X 133.3) on that board.. Even not overclocked that chip runs 2.66 GHz with Max Turbo Frequency of 3.06 GHz (like the I7-920 with 2 extra cores).

Stress testing mine. I have the BCLK at 175*16 @ 2.8GHz. I'm a little worried I might be pushing this being it's on a daily/main rig which could lose data :hmm:

Well got the X5650 in the mail today. Installed it and it is working fine. Does 20X no problem for nice even 4GHz. CPU-Z reports multipliers from 12-23 but I haven't and probably won't have time for a little while to mess with it. Better for in the fact the L5639 multipliers wouldn't work properly on my P6T. I do have another x58 machine to put the L5639 in though.

Not sure if it is worth replacing a L5639 with the X5650 but if you still have a i7-920, for $120 bucks you can gain two cores, keep your clock-speeds the same without overclocking and lower your TDP. These X series are rated at 95W.

What mobo are you using with the X5650?

The TDP rating is for Stock clocks.

I'm pretty sure when overclocked it will same pull the same amount of wattage as a 130watt when both over are overclocked to similar speeds and voltage.

I've been reading here about the fun people are having with the L5639 for some time but unfortunately the prices have gone up due to demand. Maybe not "unfortunately" because I landed a X5650 for $125 off of ebay and slapped it in place of my 920 yesterday. I've been having fun playing around with it and love the improvement in performance. My mobo is an ASRock X58 Extreme6 (BIOS P1.60) and it is running nice and stable on it so far. I have it dialed in to just over 4GHz on one core and 3.828 on all six cores.

I've hit a high of 76*C running IBT on high, CineBench (CPU) is 9.61 and so far all is good. Lots more testing to go but my initial impression is I'm glad I made the jump instead of throwing more money into upgrading my system.

Just swaping. Keeping my currect board, i hope it works out. Is it a no go for my mobo? http://www.msi.com/product/mb/X58-Platinum-SLI.html#/?div=Overview

Just shooting in the dark. If it doesn't work, no worries. I'll just sell it.

Got mine today, just put it on and it booted up.

Mobo is MSI X58 SLI that officially does not support this proccesor.

Have not OC yet, will do that some time next week. Tied up with time.

Thanks guys.

Was all ready setting up a new P6T V2 I scarfed E-Bay that came in looking pristine for a HTPC in the bedroom with the old 920.

Could just sell the 920 but nah, I'm all ready all over atm setting new things up he he.

Chip has some a$$ to it for sure.. smokes the L5639 easily.. Look at single thread perf. I was at 1600's before. Higher multi really helps

ILIKE IT! Going for 210 BCLK.. brb
