On Asus Sabertooth I have the multi set at 22 and it shows 4,600 on bios screen as it boots up. Best I could ever do with the L5639 in 3D Mark was 27,000 at 214 BCLK. This runs a little better at 210 due to higher multi. Yes, it even improved video scoring too
X5650 (note CPU score differences)

L5639

Ran Handbrake with similar results.. L5639 = 273fps

HandBrake 0.9.9.5530 - 64bit Version
OS: Microsoft Windows NT 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1
CPU: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5650 @ 2.67GHz
Ram: 12279 MB, Screen: 1920x1080

x264 [info]: using cpu capabilities: MMX2 SSE2Fast SSSE3 SSE4.2
x264 [info]: profile Main, level 3.0
[23:38:51] reader: done. 1 scr changes
[23:38:51] work: average encoding speed for job is 319.557892 fps

So it cost me about $15 to upgrade my chip (+what it will sell for) for a solid 15-16% performance gain.. worth it

Actually CB 11.5 shows about 20% improvement.. beat the W5590 w/16 threads

Very nice!
I'm still waiting for mine to arrive but im from europe so will take a little longer.
I also have a X5660 on the way, will be good fun testing both.

Would have liked to have gotten the X5660, just couldn't justify the extra $100. The X5650 is maxed out above.. Bench's at 210 but I'm on air and it hits peak temps 94-96C on some cores. Backed it down & dropped volts, stable at 204 & 89C.. Noticeably peppier than the L5639 but uses more power & makes more heat.

Anyone test memory scaling on these xeon's? I am not seeing much difference from 1780mhz @ 8-8-8-24-1t vs 2200mhz @ 10-10-10-31-2t. I need to tighten the cl10 timings and retest.

I went from corsair dominator gt 8-8-8-24-1t @ 1700mhz to g-skill ripjawz 9-11-10-28-2t @ 2125mhz.
I got a higher physics score in 3dmark and gained like 1 fps during the physics tests.
Dont have any saved results from aida64 memory benchmarks from my old dominators for better comparison unfortunately.

Just ordered the 5650. Looking forward to slapping it in place of my 950. Will be going in a Sabertooth. I assume my asetek 510LC should hook right up?

It shouldn't be if they are both 6 cores and westmere chips.

That's what I was thinking but the way Burpo worded his post it sounded like the IPC was better.

Hmm

Is that a 24/7 stable overclock or just a benchmark run that is the question?

Yeah, and what of the Multi? Is it 6 cores at 20x, or 6 cores at 23x ??? I think it's the earlier.. the X5660 is a 6 core at 2.8Ghz which is 133x21 for 2793MHz

Shame on me for not swapping out this L5639 for my i7 970. I think if I did it would hold me from buying an X5650.. I could still get a pretty penny for it and just pick up the 5650.. :hmm:

Well for some reason i cannot do anymore than 166 on the bus.

It will crash. I got it at 3663 now, 166X22. Weird part is that in my mobo it only shows 21 and it turn yellow. But cpuz is reporting 22 and so is core temp.

Have not really stress tested it. Played 30 min bf4 and no crash or weird behavior.

Giving it 0.050 over so far. Might be able to not juice it at all at 166. Anyone have any suggestions?

I had to give mine a lot of voltage for 210 BCLK .42 My cooler isn't ready for the heat & had to back it down to 204 BCLK and .30 volts to keep temps in 80's. Chip worked fine but was throttling due to heat. I watched it throttle in HWInfo64.. was kinda cool watching it cut back on various cores that hit 96C.. Too hot.. need better cooling to be stable at that speed, but it is fast.. 6 cores working @ 22 X 210 encodes GREAT! Out of all the testing I did, only had 2 Blue screens and upping the juice fixed those. looking for a better cooler..

Depends how hard you push it.. Rendering videos is all I do & I push it constantly. Completed this task 5 min. quicker than the L5639

I actually wasn't aware that cpu showed the mutli until I saw his screenshot. Seems to be in the newer version of cpu z. But something is weird there because cinebench shows 4.2 yet cpu z is showing 4.8? may be a bug in this version?

These are the multipliers I see available on my chip.

...And 1.50v on it? wow

hmm ya that's sounds danagerous on 32nm

After reading this burpo I decided to double check the TjMax and interestingly enough there is a 5 degree difference.

So far I've got my X5650 up to 4.140 GHz but I think I'm hitting the comfort limit with my current air cooling (ThermalTake Frio). I may be able to unload this cooler on a friend and if so will look at other options. Some specs and numbers:

- X5650 on ASRock X58 Extreme6 (BIOS P1.60) w/ 12 GB (6x2) OCZ Gold 1600 (OCZ3G1600LV2G) RAM
- CPU Speed/Multi:
4.140 GHz @ x23
3.960 GHz @ x22
3.600 GHz @ x20
2.160 GHz @ x12
- BCLK: 180 MHz
- UnCore: 2.880 GHz
- QPI: 7920
- Vcore: 1.296v (Manual set in BIOS @ 1.28750)
- VTT: 1.32v
- PLL: 1.82v
- RAM: 1.64v
- Mem. Timing: 7-7-7-18 (2T) (auto)
- Mem. Freq: 720 MHz (DDR-1440)

- IBT (Std./All Threads/10 pass/Max Core Temp): 79*C
- IBT (High/All Threads/10 pass/Max Core Temp): 83*C
- IBT (Std./1 Thread/10 pass/Max. Core Temp): 66*C

- CineBench 11.5: 78.59 (OGL) | 10.04 (CPU)
- CineBench 15: 101.59 (OGL) | 902cb (CPU)

The only time I see the 3.6 GHz (x20 multi) speed is in CineBench, and that's in CineBench itself. If I run HWinfo or CPUz during a CineBench test, the multi only drops down to 22 (3.960 GHz) in those programs, not 3.600 (x20) as CineBench shows. Same when running IBT, the multi drops down to 22, not 20 as I would expect. Who do I trust? :\

So far it has been stable as a rock with one bluescreen (0x---124) once I passed a 175 BCLK , same as it was with my 920. Vcore was on auto up to that point, peaking at 1.264 volts, so I went manual and set it at 1.2875 and have had no problems since.

It was a worthwhile upgrade for me at $125.00 and I'll be able to squeeze some more life out of this old workhorse.
