Bad as i hate to let this go by, someone should jump on this (Mongrel :whiste lol.. Seriously, pay the buck & a half & sell your old chip..
Sweet cheap upgrade..
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-...?pt=CPUs&hash=item35d29677c8&autorefresh=true

I'm gonna kick myself in the ass later for letting it go, but I appreciate everybody here and someone should grab this X5660 ES
Thanks again for that one, I imagine I'll lay low a month or so and sneak one in once the wife agro dies down, he he.

I imagine the upgraded Vanilla P6T V2 I scored for 130 bucks awhile back do work with em, have one running my HTPC with a 920, could stick the L5639 in that rig.

Was one of the things I built after I picked up the L5639 att, so Ive been a busy little beaver between building a HTPC and doing upgrade all over even on the main HTPC sound system.

Still running the P6T7 on the main rig.

I'm laying low with the wife to sneak things in later.

She's actually loving a lot of the new stuff, but an office type and all our stuff on quickbooks, so she watches me a bit on some things

24x210 will get you 5040MHz on single thread (turbo on) or 4830MHz on all 6 cores.

I'm assuming 5040MHz will make up for the IPC difference with an Ivy around 4.6-7GHz

please correct me if i'm wrong

Is a 215 bclk obtainable on a x5660? That's what I'm running now on my l5639 and with that x23 multiplier on the x5660, it would be just shy of 5 ghz..

also, does anyone have an x5660 and a sabertooth motherboard? I wanna see what you guys are getting for an overclock

Possibly. It's the CPU lottery were talking about. As Makaveli mentioned cooling will play a factor for sure. Those numbers are with all 6 cores , with turbo on you will get a 24 multi but with < 6 cores. 210 would be 4830MHz on all 6, and 5040 with turbo on.

Again it's the luck of the drawl with overclocking any chip.

EDIT: I currently dropped my BLCK to 170, and am @ 3910MHz on all 6 cores at only 1.23v

What's the average overclock on these then? Also why run your cpu at 4 ghz? I thought the point of the x5660 was higher clocks, although it's pretty insane that you can reach 4ghz with just 170 bclk.

Average? I'm not sure. They are 32nm and more than likely better over-clockers than 45nm. I'd say the best guess is to look at Sandybridge and take into consideration how well they overclocked. I've never read any poor feedback on their (the Xeons) overclock-ability.

I am keeping mine moderately overclocked due to it being in my daily rig. I just don't want any data corruption, or to wear out the motherboard. The motherboard wasn't pushed from day 1, and was never overclocked on but it's getting old and I'd like it to last at-least 3 or more, years.

Hey guys,

I never used a Xeon before. Is there anything I should know in terms of Overclocking? It just came in and I booted it with the stock settings I had for my i7-930 overclock I7-930 at 4.1 to 4.4ghz.

I got involved after reading the OCN thread of the Xeon beating my Golden I7-930 that hits 4.4ghz (I had d/c it to 4ghz last month) read here:
http://www.overclock.net/t/1461359/...5639-benchmarks-inside-longest-post-ever/0_70

Really would love some help on getting the most out of this chip.

Off the bat, the good news is that Windows loaded fine with these. Bad news is I have the Clock set to 21. Knowing this I should change it to 23. Can you guys look at my settings to give me your opinion?

Yeah, there is definately a setting denying you from setting the multi to 23.

Try starting from scratch and re-installing the latest bios for your motherboard. That's what I did with my X5660 and Asrock X58

I’ve been reading through this thread and noticed that many of you have switched from the L5639 to the X5650/60. Is there any benefit to going with the X5650/60 other than being able to achieve higher clock speeds with a lower blck value? I picked up a L5639 a month or so ago and managed to squeeze a 212 blck out of with for a clock speed of ~3.8ghz. 3.8ghz is stable but I backed it down to 200blck/3.6ghz for regular use. I have been super happy with the processor but there is a part of me that wants a X5650.

I guess my question is what was your motivation for going with the X5650/60? I primarily use my machine for solid modeling and gaming. Also, just for reference, I have a GA-X58A-UD3R Rev.2 motherboard.

The price is right for a decent upgrade if you sell your L5639. I sold mine for $120 and it didn't last a day on ebay. Got the X5650 for $135 and it has been the most stable chip I've tested, only blue screening twice while dialing it in and not a hiccup since. I do a lot of rendering and as seen in Cinebench scores and Handbrake, the X5650 improved those scores by 16-20%. Anytime you can improve performance at $1 a percent.. DO IT!

I only bought a X5650 because I already had another system I could put the L5639 in. I wouldn't be able to justify it otherwise.

I finally got a chance to play with the offset voltage some. So far she is idling at 0.960 volts and 1.200 at load (in CPUZ) with offset of .02250 in BIOS. BCLK is 174 for 3.8ghz

So I received my X5650 and this thing is pretty sweet. I'm in the process of finding a decent stable OC and was curious what some of you x5650 guys are running for you CPU PLL voltage and QPI voltage. I accidentally wiped out the settings from my L5639 when I updated my bios and am trying to figure out ballpark voltages. Thanks!

They're few & far between on ebay. I snagged a Sabertooth that was new RMA for $150 awhile back. It came in retail box with User guide and accessories. Good luck finding one now at a decent price..

This guy has sold 4 P6X58D's in the last week (motherboard only) at $278 + $25 shipping from China.. Everything else new is ridiculous.. $400-$700

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ASUS-P6X58D...378903813?pt=Motherboards&hash=item338b35ff05

You can get the P6X58E PRO (has Bluetooth) refurbs with latest bios, I/O Panel & sata cables for $265 delivered.

Wow that is more than I paid for my board when it was brand new in 2009!

Yeah it is weird, snagged a P6T V2 a few months back for 130$ that's working well with the old 920, the L5639 will end up in there on that rig eventually I imagine, and stick a 5660 in the ole P6T7. freeagent over at OCF has a X5690 in his rig, I've been drooling over him in some threads lately and threatening to stalk him and steal it he he.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/251419100635?afsrc=1

And I can't believe I sold that Asus P6T board about 3 months ago @ 110$ .. the thought just keeps killing me

Yes, obviously people have found out that X58 is still a good platform for building a work horse PC. I'm very happy with mine.. But prices on the boards now are ridiculous!

X5650 inbound for 165 bucks, decided that would be fine and stick this L5639 in the other and sell off the 920.

That or build a fourth computer

Hope its a good one.

Not the Costa Rica V6 one it looks didn't even notice that till then, be interesting to see what it does.

*edit* doh, is because his is a X5660, silly me.

+1. I'd like to breath some new life into my semi-retired x58 based folding rig.

I would do it socket 1366 is awesome for the staying power it has held.

If Haswell E isn't great and the chipsets don't support Sata express I can see myself staying on my rig for another year easily.
