A quick, is-it-too-good-to-be-true question: No TRIM support for X58?????!!!

Just re-read a very early post, where Terry swapped his hexagonal computational platform for a square, dull, but new, 4770 system because he needed TRIM support. Fact or fiction? TRIM or no TRIM?

Thanks!

To the best of my knowledge, fiction.

Trim support isn't a function of sata controller support, rather an os level thing, potentially ssd level.

There may be issues with getting trim under a raid setup.

Trim works fine with single SSDs not configured as RAID on X58. Been using an Intel X-25M since they came out and no problems with TRIM. There is no official support for TRIM with SSDs in RAID but some people were hacking the OROM to support it, check the Memory and Storage forum.

TRIM is only supported in Windows 7 or newer, so if you're running an earlier OS and have a TRIM compatible hard drive, you're not able to use it, no matter what chipset/motherboard.

I am one of those that has trim running on my x58 system in Raid 0

You need to modify the orom then update your bios with it.

Its a fairly straight forward process.

Thanks, everyone, for the clearing that up. After I read Terry's rationale for de-hexing, I got a little paranoid, thinking that thousands of old Xeons were silently corrupting SSDs all over the world while I typed. There's so much great information on the internet. And there's the other stuff.

Going to jump on either a Sabertoothed ASUS today or a Deluxe. Anyone miss SATA3 or USB3? Currently using SATA2 with SSDs and RAID spindle drives and it's been fast enough so far. For editing HD video, anything over 100MB/sec seems fine.

Thanks again, you shrewd cheapskates, for keeping me in the low-cost game.

You misread that post. The X58 supports TRIM on a per-drive basis. I was trying to RAID0 two SSDs and enable Trim which is only officially supported on Haswell and up.

There was a mod to replace the Intel OROM with a patched version that enabled the RAID TRIM support but my SR-2 wouldn't boot with that patched BIOS, a known bug over loading OROMs of a certain size.

I still have an L5639 rig, using that famous MSI board that those of us early on this deal got in on. That's when this was supernova hot.

Did you ever go back to trying that bios on the SR2 or did you sell the board?

I had the same issue originally with my P6T deluxe v2 not taking oroms over 100kb. And after a while dufus and fernando found a work around for it.

Ah, sorry, Terry, to impunge on your cheapskate ethos. Thanks for clearing that up. Just a little attack of late night paranoia on my part. Still kicking myself for not jumping on one of those $104 MSI boards back in August, but I was still under the spell of Hasweelie-E 8 core future-hype.

I actually traded it straight across for the 4770k setup im using now. So, no I didn't mess with it anymore but the SR2 is so different than the X58 boards I wouldn't be sure the work around would work anyway.

Not to mention it had other issues like the USB Host flaking out at the higher FSBs and the lack of UEFI.

NP. They're nice setups you just have to keep their limitations in mind.

Ah...that's so thoughtful. But, I totally missed that auction. I think I must have linked the ebay Big Spender Edition page by accident.

I'm getting waay too impatient as well. I now realize the zen of cheapskateness is to wait. And wait. Then pounce.

Might grab a cheap Z87 board and 4770k to give my current rig its required boost, grab a 5650 and hold out for a bargain Sabertooth X58. The weak Canuck dollar atm and shipping is hurting my cheapskate ethos.

Anyone using an ASRock X58 Deluxe3 to overclock a 5650 successfully?

Otherwise, I'll just go pout in the corner with a Hasee quad and cheap Z-87 board.

That motherboard supports Westmere/Gulftown as of BIOS version 1.70 (v1.80 is the latest version out), so there should be no problem in running and oc'ing a X5650 on that board.
