Well, I said I'd be perfectly happy if I got my hands on a chip that clocks as high as my W3520 did with the additional two cores. I got that and more, very pleased with this chip so far. I've had it up and running for about an hour or so, obviously don't have the voltages dialed in ideally yet and wasn't able to hit upon the magical combination for 4.9-5GHz yet but I think I'll get there. Almost completed Cinebench at just over 4.9GHz before it threw an error. Almost certainly will figure that out with some time, all in all, very happy with it.

Where do you guys get your motherboard for these chips? Also eBay? I'd prefer to only deal with ebay once. Also what's the power usage at idle and load?

Most in this thread probably already had an X58 motherboard. A very few were able to find brand new in box boards still leftover at retail when this whole thing started to blow up. Now the only way to get one is probably eBay/used. No idea on power usage numbers, probably not bad at all at idle, after all these were all meant to be low power server chips at default speeds. Under load and cranked up to 4.5+ they are probably sucking down some juice. I don't have a kill-a-watt and this system isn't hooked up to my APC UPS that shows power usage.

Dual-socket - is ebay the only place for this then?

Well it's been a while since 1366 was current so my memory may be failing me but I believe the only dual socket board that was overclockable was the EVGA SR-2. All the others are specifically server boards. So probably eBay, though I suppose it's possible some might still be in the retail channel (refurbished/open box).

Without any over clocking, I'd want X5680's at least

Anyone try a Xeon in one of these cheap Alienware X58 boards ? They have a decent amount of overclocking settings. See this post for BIOS pictures. The manual also details more of the BIOS settings.

I think I found a setting I like really well for daily use. Speeds range from 4.2GHz while all six cores are under load up to 4.76GHz for single threaded loads. Temps and voltages stay well within a comfortable range. I may see if I can alter a couple of settings to get that six core load speed up to around 4.4-4.5GHz.

My X5650 is 24X7 at 4668 or 4267 all cores, on air.. GREAT rig for my purposes.. It RENDERS!
Wishin I had that X5670 tho

I specifically held out until I found a 5670 at a price point I thought was reasonable. I wanted to make sure the chip ran out of legs before my motherboard would. The multiplier on the 5670 made it possible, the rest was up to luck in the cpu lottery. Your 5650 seems to be pretty golden anyway, you might be hard pressed to get those speeds out of a "faster" chip.

What software do you use?

I use lots of different s/w, but for Blu-Rays it's Sony's Movie Studio Pro. It is strictly CPU dependent & can't use CUDA.. The X58 Sabertooth & hex core CPU make life a whole lot easier for me

Is there anyway to read the VID of an X5650? I am using X58A-UD5 rev 1, and coretemp doesn't show it.

Into Windows @ 5.0GHz
Windows didn't crash but it couldn't complete the bench I ran. Was trying to complete Fritz with a +50 score. Anyone have an idea what is reasonably safe voltage for short duration runs on these chips?

I don't know what's available in your BIOS, but w/Asus Sabre Tooth I set voltage offset @ .4 volts on anything above 210 BCLK and during testing CPU-Z reports 1.52 - 1.54 volts. That's all I can do with air cooling & not for long..
I tried 212 & .45 offset and it throttled 1/2 way thru the test with temps spiking 96. It is fun pushing these old chips tho. Mine never bluescreens, just throttles Pretty sure you've got all you can get.. X5670's no 3930k either

Hey, you might.. It's really more about the motherboard, QPI volts, power delivery, RAM etc. I'm ready to try one of those ES X5675's as that's the fastest 95 watt LGA1366 Xeon I've found. Pretty sure it'll do 5Ghz on air.
