I think you are wasting your time with an H20 loop on that chip. The Northbridge will need it more, imo. My 4.2GHz chip idles at ~28c in 70f ambient temps. Gaming load might be close to 40c same ambient temps

Got everything put together, during install noticed that the green audio port was physically broken (green plastic part was almost completely missing with some kind of bare wire sticking just out of the hole). System would not boot with 4x2GB known good sticks installed. Cut back to 3x2GB and it would boot but would not pass memtest86 properly (screen would be blank after running for a while, would not come back until rebooted). Windows setup would not complete until I cut it back to just a single 2GB stick installed. At that point I was able to run IBT just to confirm that the CPU was running correctly (at stock speeds, would not break 60C on any core under Xigmatek Gaia cooler). But, with all the memory problems and the broken audio port, requested a return to the seller, which was accepted. Did some more looking and found a Rampage III Gene board for $225 shipped from eBay, should be here tomorrow. Fingers crossed for better luck with a higher end board.

If the asus board works your going to love it for sure its one of the most amazing mobo's around and you got if for a steal!! Cant wait till tomorrow for you to post your results.I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya bud..

Ok thanks for the reply!! I need more cores more then more speed as I mostly do Rendering/Encoding along with a slew of other work station tasks. I really dont do all that much gaming on my Pc although I do have 2 R9 270x's.I really dont care all that much for overclocking but it may be nice.I have been looking at the HP-z800 dual socket motherboard for the 2 X5650's I just bought. So I am just stuck on what Dual socket motherboard to purchase. I would love a EVGA SR2 but I dont know that I could justify spending $600-800 for just a motherboard when I could choose another for $150.00 or under and be set. I guess the big question is can these server boards accept standard desktop DDR3 ram modules or do I have to purchase 100% for sure EEC Ram?? I really hope they take standard desktop stuff cause I have a nice 24GB ready to go. Any more advice would be well appreciated, thanks in advance all..

I have a Supermicro X8DTi with 2 x L5640s. It can use non ECC DDR3 1333 in 12 slots. Max is 12x4GB for 48GB total. For Reg ECC you can have 12x16GB for 192GB total. I have 6x2GB ECC. I tested Handbrake with 1 x L5640 and I got about 160 fps with hyperthreading. With 2 x L5640 I got about 253 fps w/o hyperthreading. With 2 x L5640 with hyperthreading I was only getting about 240 fps.

modeler1, Thanks so much for posting that info I have been waiting for someone with a dual socket setup to post some benchmarks specially Handbrake!! I am trying to decide whether or not to just sell off my MSI mobo for a dual socket x58 setup or moving up to x79 or x99 may be better. I already have 2x L5639's and 2x X5650's so maybe I should just grab a x58 Lga1366 dual socket mobo and call it a day?? I am guessing that the higher QPI and Higher Cpu ratio using 2x X5650's would be better then 253fps in handbreak versus what your using which is the l5640's??I wonder why your showing a decrease is fps with using 2x Hyperthreading??If you have time could you please run a quick benchmark of cinebench 11.5 so I can get an idea of what kind of performance I can get with a dual socket setup??Also what kinda power supply would I need to run a dual socket mobo and how much am I looking at spending in electric to run a monster like that??

I estimate if 2 x X5650 is not overclocked it will get about 275 fps. The L5640 is rated as 2.26Ghz and 2.79 Ghz Turbo. I think it is showing a decrease in 2x hyperthreading is because the system can not supply 24 threads with enough data. Even with 12 threads the system can not keep the cores at 100%. Also, if 2 threads are running in one core and it is just waiting for data then it will just slow down that one core.
I ran Cinebench 11.5 without Hyperthreading and it shows 12C/12T @ 2.27GHz, Intel Xeon CPU L5640 = 9.56. With Hyperthreading it shows 12C/24T @ 2.27GHz, Intel Xeon CPU L5640 = 11.59.
If I am not using the HD 7750 my system maxes at at about 250 watts. At idle about 135 watts. Anyway all I got in there is just 1 hard drive, 1 sound card, 1 HD7750 gpu, 2 x L5640, 6 x 2Gb DDR3 1333. Remember L5640 is rated at 60 watts and X5650 is 95 watts. If you want the test I used for Handbrake go to this thread: There you can see a single L5639 overclocked to 3.8 GHz get 240fps. A single i7-4930K @ 3.40GHz get 317 fps. Maybe you are better off with the new cpus. http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2327881

What do you guys suggest for adding additional RAM? I can't find the same part number RAM for sale as what I'm currently running. Would another brand be fine as long as it's the same timings and speed? Also are there any issues filling all 6 slots? Seems what was a problem in the past but I can't remember.

Hmmm... Something sounds amiss here cause I am getting some where around 11.25 in cinebench with just one cpu overclocked at 3.6-4.2Ghz with turbo and hyperthreading on. Sometimes cpuz shows a temporary spike in speed to around 4.6GHz but it never stays there and I know I dont have any multi's that I can select to force this speed for all the time use. It happens when I hammer my cpu with lets say, heandbrake and I am encoding 5-10 video files it'll jump from 3.6 right up to 4.6GHz for a couple seconds then drop back to 4.2Ghz every so often. I always keep System monitor, cpuz, and NZXT system monitor running in the back ground to keep tabs on my system. Not sure why this is but it freaks me out when I see this happen.Anyways like I was saying its odd that a L5640 with turbo on needs 2 cpu's to get to 11.59 when I am doing it with just one?? I should get better then 11.59 with 2x X5650's since the stock speed is 2.6 and I think turbo is like 3.0-3.2GHz or something like that not sure so please dont quote me on that. What do you think of This mother board http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-HP-Z800...359869936?pt=Motherboards&hash=item2591cc37f0
I have been thinking about getting this guy cause it looks like it has all the features I am looking for and its in my price point of cheap skate LOL.
The only thing is it looks like it may take some sort of specialized power supply cause the plug in ports look different.Any one have any experience with this board??

When running Cinebench CPUZ sees the L5640 jumping between 2.26Ghz and 2.39Ghz. It can only reach max turbo speed of 2.79Ghz when only 5 or 4 cores are idle. The X5650 at stock speed would be jumping between 2.66Ghz and 2.79 Ghz. Max turbo speed is 3.06Ghz. That motherboard will not fit your case unless you have a HP Z800 case. It is Custom Form Factor, 13" x 14.25". The regular ATX motherboard is 12" × 9.6". Also, it can only use registered or unregistered ECC memory. Look at http://static.highspeedbackbone.net/pdf/HP_Z800_Workstation_QuickSpecs_13278_na.pdf The X8DTi I have has a size of 12" x 13" which is called Extended ATX or EATX. I had to get a case that will fit this motherboard. The only motherboards I see with 2 PCI-E x16 slots are the Supermicro X8DA3 and X8DAi. Both are also 12" x 13". Another thing is you need 2 8pin power connector instead of one. You can by a power supply with 2 or you can buy one of this http://www.ebay.com/itm/260914117923?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

Hey guys, I got the R3G in, got everything set up and unfortunately I get nothing on screen. Fans spin up and it behaves like it is booting but no video output.

So, now I have a question. Should this board be able to boot fine with an X5650? I have no idea what BIOS revision is loaded and no other s1366 chips to try to confirm if this is simply a BIOS issue or something else.

Is there perhaps a kind soul here who could lend me an i7 920/etc to test and flash the BIOS to the latest revision? I would be happy to pay shipping both ways.

That board should boot with that chip. Seems you had issues with the first board not liking your memory. Could be a reason for that. If the memory is bad or has issues, it's going to be difficult to troubleshoot. Make sure CMOS is clear by removing the battery for awhile, then try 1 stick of RAM. You should have video, otherwise I'd say you got another bad board.

The four sticks of memory pass a whole night/day cycle of memtest86 on a Pentium G3258 setup I also have open on the desk, so I doubt that's the issue. And, also, I did just use a single stick in the brief testing last night, tried it in two different sockets, resetting the BIOS between the tries.

I will try the other slots with different memory sticks tonight when I have more time available.

I really just hope the BIOS supports my x5650 otherwise memory changes won't do anything. And the official CPU support list doesn't even list the Xeon chips, although word around the forums says they work fine (but not necessarily with whatever BIOS revision this one has).

If no luck with the memory tonight I may just buy a 920 off eBay (around $35-40) to make sure I don't just need an updated BIOS.

If you are running anything above ddr3 1333 it may not boot. I know my chip hates anything past that and refuses to post with any 1600-1866 sticks. Also you might want to try and remove your C-mos battery and disconnect all the power plugs from your motherboard for about 10 mins and then replace your battery back into the motherboard and reconnect all the power plugs and then power it on to try and see if it will post.If not then you know for sure there is a problem. You may just have a dead chip.

DDR-1333 1.5V 2GB sticks

Will try the CMOS battery clear, I did the button push last night but did not pull the battery.

Well it may not be your motherboard it very well could be your chip is dead.. Do you have another cpu laying around that you could toss in the mobo?? if not there are plenty of cheapie dual and quad cores on ebay for like $20 bucks..

According to the Sabertooth X58 manual:
Due to Intel spec definition, X.M.P. DIMMs and DDR3-1600 are supported for one DIMM per channel only.
