Finally.

Got some OC action from my 5660. Not too bad. Have some airflow issues to deal with in the Ghost case. Stock fans are weak. Replacements on the way.

Screenshot from a Windows X(perimental) install. 3D rendering in the flat PlaySkool yard is weird. ;-)

Voltage offset at .3 for that pass. For daily use, .218 offset and BCLK in the mid 180s x23 for 1.328V peak under load will do just fine. Loses half a point, but also lots of heat.

Still soaking up the moar cores, 12 threads vibe. Very, very nice vibe.

Big shout out to Burpo for the assistance in this thread. Used your settings for the base line. When you upgrade to Skylake-E, I'll be looking to you for MB and settings. ;-)

And a big thank you to the server farms harvesting these amazing chips for us canny enthusiasts at sub entry level quad prices.

My roomie ordered a X5660 to play with in place of his 920. Can someone give me an idea of what kind of OC he could probably expect out of it with an NH-D14? is 4.3-4.4 a reasonable expectation?

All depends what he is using it for? Folding? Mining? Just gaming? 4-4.4 should not be out of the question even on air cooling.

Overclocking is one of those area's where you get people saying it must pass hours insane testing to be stable, however in reality if it works with whatever applications your using, its stable enough.

Just a reminder, 1.35v is the max Intel voltage for those Xeon chips. Be careful

is 1.35v the max recommended for daily usage? If not, whats the recommended max for 24/7 usage? Also, what is the max P95 temp for one of these things?

I don't think he's too terribly worried about reliability, he spent 100 bucks on it and has the 920 as a backup.

The 130 watt i7 cpu's are 1.375, so don't be too concerned about voltage. These'll take more as long as you control temps.
I have used as high as 1.6 volts to see 5Ghz, and punished this chip for the last 10 mo.. Currently running 1.33 24x7 with adaptive that hits up to 1.49 when needed. Again, these are server procs (will take it as long as temps are within spec).
Haven't seen or heard of anyone killing one of these yet. If you push it too hard, they throttle for self preservation..
I used to like to watch mine throttle from core to core at 96c.. Now I stay out of the 90's, but still render @ 4.3Ghz..

Burpo, so what you're saying is....even tho mine was hitting 1.456V peak at load, with the temps on the hottest core hitting 72, that the real fun doesn't happen until you get to 96?!!!

lol.. no not saying that.. just that the EP series Xeons are hearty chips & good for overclocking.. Those temps are good..

I heard 1.45v is about the max the i7 970 can go on a 24/7 basis if the temps keep in check e.g. < 70c

turned off HT and am able to get another 100Mhz out of her at the same volts. HT really isn't a big deal on the machine as it it's just for gaming. Getting a SS @ 6 cores of 4.5GHz.. looks like it scored 8.90. It did score an 11.35 with HT on but it was unstable in P95.

Man, I feel like I'm really babying mine. 1.208 volts under load and runs into mid 60s on prime at 3.8ghz

How do you like that Sabertooth? When I bought my i7 970 it came with an Asus P6T, and 2x3Gb of 1600Mhz. I sold off the mobo and ram thinking I would never use it EDIT: or i might of been trying to save myself from building another machine. Then again I could of used it for troubleshooting purposes oops again

I think it's a great board as it has all the BIOS settings you could want AFAIK, but I haven't used any other X58 boards to compare it to. Had been running an oc'd 950 at 3.8 since 2010 and now the 5650 since February. I've been kicking around the idea of buying a duplicate setup as the price/performance ratio seems hard to beat.

I'm wondering if anyone here measured the idle power usage, I know there is a huge variation between different x58 boards, but I'm curious about how low can an efficient x58 MB and 32nm CPU (and efficient VGAs, not the old 9800GTXs most old tests have) go, I've been thinking about getting the x5650, but if idle power usage is ridiculously high compared to sandy bridge, I find it problematic since I have to run the PC 24/7 with low CPU usage.

Doubt it's going to fill that bill. The X58 is more about compute power and @ 195 BCLK it idles at 2400mhz. prolly 65-70 watts at idle, add 100+ more under load.. My old GTX 570 uses about 150 watts @ idle.. shrug.. It is what it is..

Know any good power monitoring s/w? I'm curious too..

I would probably be happy with something like 3.6GHz and the lowest vcore possible, but to measure power I was thinking more about total system power (excluding monitor), something you can measure with an external device like "kill a watt"

Push your Xeon like that.. Less heat to deal with.. I got 11.81 with a 2.66 X5650.. An X5660 should beat it..

It won't work in my game machine (evga 760 A1, rev 1.0). Wish it did, I would of kept the L5639 in this rig.

I'm actually interested and trying to understand why I am getting this high of cb scores at my clocks. 11.70 is kinda high for 4.61GHz. The first thing that changed was I lowered the multi to 23 from 24 and it raised my BLCK to 201 but that's only a 12 point delta

11.81 was @ 4.87Ghz & 213 BCLK, after that I had to turn off prefetch and drop QPI speed, so it became counterproductive.

I wouldn't think that is at all out of the range of variability. The run I posted the other day was 11.59@4.69. What by chance is your ram running at at 201 bclk? I'm wanting to say mine runs at slightly under 1500mhz at my 24x195 setting. So if you're running well above that it may account for some of it, though I don't know how much Cinebench is influenced by memory bandwidth.
