What were you using to stress test this overclock and for how long did you run the testing?

Initially before doing any of the graphics benchmarks and applying the CPU OC I ran IBT @ Very High for 10 passes.

3DMark, Furmark, Heaven, OCCT were all run after the GPU OC was applied.

After that I ran the following for 1 hour each with the voltage I posted before:

- AIDA 64 with as much memory as I could without getting Win7 low mem errors.

- LinX with max memory again since I only did 10 passes of IBT initially.

- Prime95 with small FTT's since it cranks the temps up the most and there was minimal time betwen AIDA64 and LinX. Rad coolant temps were 9 degrees higher at this point. IT CRASHED. I had to up the CPU voltage one more tick to get it to finish an hour, 1.4 total.

Initially Wolfenstein ran for a good session. I got a good couple of hours. After the first crash I went back in and it actually BSOD'd so I dropped it back down.

Menace, do you have HWmonitor? If so, what is your package powers reading? I could have sworn mine always said 95 max but now its showing 109... Am I in trouble here?

No I don't, but I have a few other monitors. Is there another name for this variable that I can check in another monitor for you?

Core Wattage maybe? I'm not sure. I know its always said 95W and the processor is a 95W core. So that is my best guess.

Is there a preferred CPU among L5640, X5640, X5650 and X5675 (or any other which is not listed) for overclocking?

The X5650 seems the best candidate so far, but I haven't seen results with an X5675. It's the fastest clocked 95 watt CPU..

I haven't figured out how to hit the number's that BURPO has managed but impressive nonetheless. Being able to turbo at over 4.5GHz on a five year old six core? I'll take it!

Thanks! I am on the fens!

I am wondering if it is a cost effective decision.

The motherboard I looked at in ebay (Rampage Gene III) goes for about $220 and X5650 will be another $80 for a total of about $300. Total price for the motherboard and CPU for my i7-4780k setup was approx $320 including tax (Microcenter had excellent prices for combos). How would you compare a 4780k setup with and overclocked X5650?

Will the standard stock air cooling work for overclocked X5650?

You can buy a clean used Lenovo ThinkStation S20, with Xeon Quad-Core, 3GB Ram, 500 MB, Nvidia Quadro, CD/DVD Rewritable drive with 625watt power supply, on ebay for $130 and drop in a $90 X5660 for what that board costs.
Add some ram & your video card for a decent hexcore PC.. No overclocking tho..

Or just the board for $70.. Cheap for X58..

What use are you buying a x58 system for?

Bear in mind most of these CPU's and motherboards are over 6 years old already. I'm only ever recommend a x58 xeon if you already have a x58 motherboard and can't afford Haswell (Z97 or X99).

Actually buying the motherboard and CPU is quite foolish in my opinion - no warranty and as you saw, the motherboards are not dirt cheap as they should be.

Completely agree, unless you already have the X58 board, spend a little more for a 4790 and a modern platform. I keep half way wishing for my X58 to bite the dust so I have the excuse to build a mini itx with a 4790.

Agreed, absolutely.

Unless you're like me and already have a socket 1366 system around, don't bother sinking money into it. A new 1150 i7 will do better.

You'll see when you get your chip that's not always true. Transcoding @ same clock speed, the Xeon hex beats i7 1150.

Well... I am considering Xeon for desktop mainly to try over clocking . Moreover, I have an old AMD 6000+ which I want to replace. But at stock clock speeds X5660 may not be much of an upgrade.

Would you know if E5506 is overclockable? I have a couple lying around.

A 6 core Xeon at 2.8 Ghz won't be much of an upgrade over Dual core 3.0 Athlon 64 ?????

Don't you think so? Won't single threaded performance of AMD X2-6000+ be better than 2.8GHz Xeon?

No way dude. You're way out of the loop here. The Xeon will crush the X2, jail its children, burn its home and salt the earth. And that's just in single thread performance before overclocking

I am an AMD fan .. so don't argue with me

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+X5660+@+2.80GHz

Xeon X5660 (turbo 3.2), 6 REAL cores w/hyper threading in a working Lenovo Tower with decent specs/parts for $225..
Sell the AMD!! lol

You don't have to overclock to enjoy Intel hex-core goodness.. cheaper if you don't

In my experience single threaded performance is the only factor which makes the computer feels snappy. I am sure both (2.8GHz Xeon and 3.0GHz AMD) will be similar in windows user experience (not their index), as far as UI response etc goes.

I want to have some fun over clocking too! Last time I over clocked was prior to P3-1GHz (Celeron 300A, AMD 450MHz and similar ). Otherwise the motherboard you linked is pretty good!

Edit: My i7 system actually replaced an AMD 1100T. Will X5660/X5670/X5675 be faster than AMD 1100T?
