Don't believe CPU ID (or any other software). If it's not showing up in bios, it's not usable..

Yeah I look off the cooler bracket on the back and there was a cut in the back that cut through some of the traces leading towards the ram, which probably happened when I tightened the cooler last night, so I'm gonna try to fix it

Use a pencil or trace pen if you're attempting repair, no soldering..

Yeah I work as a testing and qa tech for an electronics company so I'm gonna take it there and see if they can quickly look at it, it's cut pretty deep into the copper

Interesting! You said "some of the traces". It is extremely unlikely that tightening HSF can be such dramatic. Did you slip the screw driver by any chance?

Well there's a backplate that goes on your board for the 212 and the screws in the front go into that, and the cut was right under that so I think I got the backplate bracket bending from the tightness without realizing it and I've had the cooler installed for so many years it could of been slowly doing it already and my tightening last night just sealed its fate.

I don't recall hitting it with a screwdriver

Very interesting! If the base bracket is metal then that might have already short circuited those PCB tracks.

Something to look for while buying used motherboards!

Edit: group buy won't work! Will new mATX Rampage Gene III in retail box for $250 be a good price?

Whoa.. no way!! I know it's mATX and all, but that's too much..
I was just notified I can get up to 8 more of the previously posted Gigabyte boards, but they're full size ATX.. I may grab some more, depending how the first ones test out..

I thought that was pretty close to original price. Wasn't it about $220 brand new? Used computer parts can be a headache.

Note: Was looking for a micro-ATX for a 2U server to be paired with x5675 or x5690.

Did the X5698's ever go into production? Or are they just a Myth? 4.4GHz stock speed, 33x multi, 130w

EDIT: oh hell, it's a dual core, lol, wuuuuuuuuut!?

Thinking about going with an X5690 possibly, for the main rig

Lots of servers liquidated thru Texas.. Doesn't mean they come from there or ran hot.. Ebay has money back guarantee..

X5650@ 4GHz [1.34/1.35(?) vcore | 1.341 qpi v] after a fast/simple V-ray render:

5ºc difference.
cooled by old NH-D14
mboard: P6T dlx v2 with original P6T Dlx v2 BIOS

P6T Deluxe v2 doesn't alow offset voltage too.
Doesn't alow offset voltage neither can keep 21/22x 'turbo multiplier' on heavy load in 6 cores..

But now I 'flashed' P6X58D [premium i think] BIOS and now I have offset voltage..
Still, doesn't alow 22x multi on heavy load on all cores.

With a P6T WS bios I could keep 22x multiplier all time/full load in 6 cores, but I'll lose offset voltage.

I prefer offset voltage for 24/7 use.

Warning:
Flashing BIOS from different Mboards may 'burn' your Mboard.
I'm not responsible if you burn your board.
I only read and tried this procedure for P6T Deluxe v2, I don't know if it works with different Mboards.

My system holds the 21x Multiplier fine all the time / full load.

i love having the voltage offset feature. Its one of my favorite features for my "budget" EX58-UD3R. it is called dynamic voltage on this board. Also can use the 23-24x turbo multipliers in my x5670, full load all cores with no throttling. The 25x multiplier is limited to single thread loads though.

So basically, i have my chip running like a stock 4.2ghz westmereEP. I have all the power savings features on: speedstep, all cstates, and dynamic voltage which has a +.11 offset set. Clock speeds drop to 2100mhz @ 1v (175x12) when there isnt much of a load and boost up to 4.4ghz @ 1.312v (175x25). It will flip back and forth when browsing and such. Every once in awhile i see odd multipliers like 18,21,etc here and there, the random 3150/3650mhz but they are gone in a flash. I guess its ramping up and down? I dont know.

But if i fully load my PC, stress testing, encoding, or even in modern games, my CPU is locked at 4.2ghz @ 1.28v. This is my speed when i have a load across many cores. It is locked there no matter how long i stress it. Fully stable, 24/7 usage.

the westmereEP is a blessing to people with compatible x58 boards. They are cool and run smooth. My consumption with this six core xeon is a lot lower than the 920 that it replaced.

The only thing, and it might be just my chip, it does seem that the memory controller is not as robust as the the older 45nm i7s. I cant get it to boot with 2100mhz+ ram speeds. It might just be this 1600mhz gskill ram though, but i have tried loosening the ram to 12-12-12 and bumping up the ram voltage, but still no luck. I had issues with my old ram so it might be just this gskill isnt having it, but i really think it is the CPU.

Is anyone else having issues with high ram speeds on these 32nm chips? 1800mhz seems 100% fine but cant seem to get the next multiplier to work for nothing.

Its okay though, 1800mhz 10-9-9-24 1t is good enough for me. hopefully 12gb will be enough for a little while.

btw, i picked up another ex58-UD3R with a 920 and 8 gb of ram for 81$ off ebay, so now that i have a back up.....i think i might pick up a w3690 or x5690 and really see how far i can push it. I have been a little afraid to push such an old motherboard too hard. But having a dirt cheap back up, now i can let go of that fear and have some fun!!!!!!!!

Cool.. wanna see how that X5690 performs
These came in today, but like you I'm waiting on a cpu & cooler to test with X5550 will be here soon.. good for testing

Picked up one of these (new) for $16..

Yeah, for $12 delivered.. lol
I just need it to test the boards. I may be getting a few more..
These supposedly have USB 3.0 issues. Possibly drivers.. I'll know more soon..
