Oh, Burpo! How horrible for you! So many fancy chromed boards, so few 5675s...

Happy testing!

Christmas in March!?!? Woooo hooooooooo!

I'm guessing you got them from Gibabyte and they are refurbished boards? And nothing wrong with a refurb!

Nice!!! Happy Clocking!!!

what are some good micro atx boards for this platform? I'm still rocking the l5639 but im willing to trade my sabertooth + cpu for a micro atx and an x5660... Everything works on the board and im able to get a somewhat stable 4.2 ghz

Here's a Gateway OEM X58 board http://www.ascendtech.us/acer-gateway-mb-g4109-002-motherboard_i_mbacmbg4109002m.aspx

or for overclocking Asus Rampage 2 & 3 are also mATX, and decent boards (if you can find them)..

Edit: Found some New, but pricey..

Look what ebay has right now tho..

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gigabyte-GA..._DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ae6903d78#viTabs_0

Gigabyte GA-7TESM Dual LGA1366 is a server board & holds the most memory ever for X58 (288Gb)..
Complete with 2 X5560 CPUs for $159.. Ditch those and use a pair of X5690's and it still only uses 330 watts. No need to overclock with 24 workers at that speed

"The Sandy Bridge-EP system used 26.3% more power during CPU load than our Westmere-EP system did, in line with the pricing of the CPU itself."

Wow, I'm not doing any professional work so I think a dual socket it unnecessary. I just want a board that can overclock an x5660 to 4 ghz and can fit in a small case, my Haf xb is nice but I don't have beefy enough specs anymore to justify the inconvenience of its size

I have absolutely no use for that yet I want to pick it up.

I will say though, "only 330 watts". That's as much as my two L5640 systems combined. To that end, that also bleeds over in my Budget Server Lab thread. If you aren't going to be overclocking, you can get a complete dual socket system for ~$240 if you shop around a bit.

I almost never see a reasonably priced X58 board in the UK, and shipping costs a bomb. I live in fear that my board or cpu will let out the magic smoke and I'll have to buy a new platform. Last time I checked it's CHEAPER to buy a board & a mid-range i5 than most X58's here.

The shipping is not so bad, it's the duty you pay on top that makes it add up.

i5 vs. X58 Hexcore Xeon.. That's a no brainer. Of course it costs more..

Yeah, I love my L5639 but in the event that it gives up I suspect I'll end up getting something more modern. I really dislike being in this position of not being able to get replacement parts apart from second-hand from the US or Hong Kong. I'm not complaining right now, got my 5639 for about £60 all-in, which was a bargain upgrade from the 920 it replaced, but when you're looking at $350 for a replacement motherboard with effectively no warranty the picture sours a bit. It was cheaper to buy an S1150 haswell system for my son than an X58 motherboard and reuse my old 920. It probably performs similarly as well.

The current equivalent is ridiculously expensive though, so I might stick with it for another couple of years Where did you get your batch of MBs from?

Are multi socket MB locked in terms of not allowing OC?

I think there is a Supermicro dual socket mb that can be overclocked. It's been a while, but I know there are a couple.

I found an EVGA SR-2 motherboard that can be overclocked. The manuals are linked here. http://www.evga.com/support/manuals/files/270-WS-W555.pdf and http://www.evga.com/support/manuals/files/visual/270-WS-W555_Visual_Guide.pdf

And I found one for sale on fleabay. The motherboard, matching 5680's and water blocks. Current bid is $400, which seems like a steal to me.

SR-2s are nice things, if you can find one these days at a decent price.

$400 is more than I'd go for one I guess.

I'd just wait these days for that much maybe, much as I'd like one.

oh cause the cheapest i could find on ebay was 180 bucks

I assume you got yours on a steal.

I went with what he said @ $180 + $18.95 ship, and the first 3 Gigabyte GAX58A UD7s sold out in 24 hrs!

Where are you getting these Gigabyte boards?
Hoping to lock down 5 more on Wednesday.. Maybe I should auction these & see what they bring.. Now I can get X5675

$400 isn't bad, since it includes a matching pair of 5680's. Just bought a new house, so my toy account is dry for now. Or I'd likely buy it.

7 days left on that auction.. It's going to go a lot higher than $400..

But why?

Not questioning your statement, I just don't understand the premium these boards are carrying. Don't get me wrong, I love the processors, I've got 6 L5640's and 4 L5630's at the house. But I just paid $240/ea for a pair of HP DL380 G6's with 16Gb of RAM and a pair of 5640's each. People are paying close to that just for used consumer level motherboards which seems absurd to me.

Will your HP DL380 G6 do this?

That's why they are still willing to pay a premium for the boards..

So I have an opportunity to grab a xeon x5670 2.93 for $40 bucks. Should I jump on it?
I have an evga classified3 that supports these xeons.

I just installed a Xeon X5675 on my EVGA E768 (FTW3) board, mildly overclocked it to 3.44GHz, and temps are still low (25-30°C in idle, 47°C in-game, didn't run any OC stability test tool yet)

hoping to find a good tutorial and get it up to 4 or 4.5GHz

40$? seems like a no-brainer.

I agree.

You obviously care about stability.

A 5Ghz overclock that is not 24/7 stable isn't impressive maybe for novice users.

Running 1.4+ volts on a chip that 32nm chip that intel recommends 1.35v Max also not the best idea.

Yes, that boards a bit tricky to overclock.. However the 95 watt Xeons do overclock better than 130 watt i7's..
Here's some good info on it tho..
http://www.overclock.net/t/931975/high-bclk-issues-on-evga-ftw3

45nm i7 130watt vs 32nm xeon 95 watt hmmm.. lol

Bloomfield vs Gufttown will obviously not have similar overclocking potential.

When I actually look at the 95 watt Xeon's vs the 130 watt i7 both at 32nm I don't see better overclocking.

thanks for the link.
I used to have the EVGA SLI (E758) but it had issues and EVGA replaced it for me with the FTW3.
Which encouraged me to get a 6-cores Xeon from ebay.

I hope I can at least get it up to 4GHz.
I have a huge case (ATCS 840) with lot of extra fans, and the NH-D14 to cool down the CPU.

EDIT: this seems to be a good guide: http://www.techreaction.net/2010/09/07/3-step-overclocking-guide-bloomfield-and-gulftown/
