You sure you had RDIMM? That's registered ecc ram. As far as I know X58 does not work with registered, only unbuffered ecc.

Yes I specifically bought a 2gb stick of registered ECC ddr1333 from eBay to test. My plan was to try 16gb chips if I knew reg ECC worked but other things happened and I ended up selling my x58 platform.

unhappy to report that I am struggling overclocking the X5675 on the EVGA FTW3 E768.

I am running it at 3.9GHz and I am not even sure if that's stable...
CPU Core voltage keeps dropping below what I set it to in the bios, should I disable VDroop?

Memory is underclocked (stock timings, but frequency of 1400MHz or less, lower than the 1600MHz it's rated)

my settings:
BCLK: 170MHz
CPU Vcore: 1.35V
DRAM: 1.65V (stock voltage)
CPU VTT: 1.35V
IOH Vcore: 1.15V
PWM Frequency: 933KHz

the rest should be stock voltage.

I disabled SpeedStep, Turbo and Energy saving features.

I am trying to reach 4GHz super stable (means doesn't crash when I run Intel Burn Test, or PassMark)

what am I doing wrong?

thanks, that seems to be working now.
reenable SpeedStep, BCLK 175, 4GHz, and the first pass of Inter Burn Test at Maximum went without any BSOD.
I'll keep raising BCLK.
BCLK of 190 worked fine with a very low multiplier and memory speed so that's the ultimate goal.

but without VDroop, my max temps are now around 60°C (before it was more like 50°C)
so seems like I either settle on 3.8GHz or so, with VDroop, or 4GHz+, without VDroop.

60°C is fine. I wouldn't worry about that at all.

good to know
maybe I should get a kill-o-meter though, and check how much an overclock is actually costing me per year.

I plan on keeping this rig potentially until X99 gets replaced (so until mid-2017, beginning 2018, I'd say)

performance is really very decent for such an ancient architecture.

Set multiplier at 24, bclk 180 = 4.3Ghz

I wish I don't see how to set the multiplier to 24, highest is 23 in the BIOS, EVGA doesn't offer the feature your motherboard has

ok, I just CPU Passmarked at a 4.2GHz overclock.
Score (just for the CPU) is 10'343, more than double a random core i7-920 (4'840), and not too far behind a 4790K (11'793) (both at stock speed, with the same GPU I have)

however, a stock 5820K is far ahead (14'149 points)

but that doesn't matter to me, so far, I have a huge increase in performance over my previous core i7-920 that I've been running at stock speed for a long time.

"a bit more".. If I had your X5675, would give a stock 5820k a good run..

Interesting to note I had forgotton to put a 4Gb stick back in and my scores were low this morning @ 11,885 Cpumark & 651 Physics.. Added third memory stick & much better results.. 12,234 Cpumark & 762 physics

I could not login into Windows at 4.5GHz...
reboot, crash, or BSOD every time.

I could at 4.4GHz though, and managed to run CPU PassMark, and got a moderately higher score (10852)
I will now run Intel Burn Test and see if it's stable.

EDIT: nope, not stable

I downclocked it to 4GHz and I am giving up for now.
I can not go higher than 4.3GHz, and I can not activate Turbo even at 4GHz.
I'll keep reading when I have more time to see if I can squeeze more performance out of it but for now, I am happy with 4GHz, and will try to tighten the RAM timings since it's running lower than 1600MHz anyway.

These cheap 6-cores Xeon flooding ebay... Is it safe to say that we will see the same thing happening with X79 and then X99 in the future?

While I'm not %100 sure, I think these Westmere's were the last overclockable Xeons. I'm sure if I'm wrong it will be pointed out early and often though.

oh if we could get something like the E5-2687W, or even a pair (Asus makes some dual sockets motherboards) for cheap at some point, overclocking might not even be necessary, especially seeing how little progress in clock speed we've been seeing the last 5 years, and assuming in 5 or 6 years, the majority of programs will take advantage of multi-core CPUs

Got my x5670 yesterday. Popped in in this morning. Stock idle temps on a H50 are cpu- 24C, core- 38C.
Overclocked to 3.8 with a multi of 23, blk 160, vcore of 1.25. Idle temps are cpu- 45C, core 58C. Under stress cpu is 58C, core- 78-80C. I upped to 4Ghz and temps rose a bit more.

Can you run adaptive voltage and enable speedstep? That should get your temps back down to near stock idle.

got a breakthrough now that I finally understood how Turbo works on my EVGA board, and how RealTemp messed up with it by default.

now that it's all sorted out, I am running a stable 4.4GHz at 177x25.
also bumped uncore to 2x ram speed and it's still low (3'000MHz).

getting close to 11'000 CPU Mark: http://www.passmark.com/baselines/V8/display.php?id=38648363822

never thought I'd have so much fun with X58 after all those years

Glad you got it sorted.. A lot of the X58 boards are tricky to overclock w/Xeons.. and you MUST control temps..
Asus makes overclocking too easy..
Controlling temps @ <200 watts not so easy. :\

Anyone have experience with overclocking the ud7 boards or gigabyte bios in general? I wanna get the most out of this board and was wondering if there were any specific quirks to them.

Load optimized defaults, set max CPU volts to 1.34, set multi @ 22 & crank up bclk, match memory speed & test.. Only turn off vdroop.. or you could use the Gigabyte EasyTune app to get your settings figured out, then change bios accordingly..

what do you mean by controlling temps?
I think I am below 60°C in gaming and below 70° in Maximum Intel Burn Tests, so it's fine I guess
I might buy a kill-o-meter to check how much power my PC is actually consuming at idle.

You're good to go.. I don't have X5675 & to get X5650 to 4.4ghz. I have to use higher bclk & a lot more juice..

yup, finally satisfied with my Noctua NH-D14
and my Shin-Etsu thermal paste probably helped as well.

Sure, high voltage will degrade a CPU (slightly) if kept at constant high voltage. That's the problem with your board/bios. You don't have adaptive voltage. A board that does will idle at 1.18 volts and peak much higher when needed. Under these conditions, the CPU will degrade MUCH slower.. Intel says I can run my Xeon at 96c peak for 10+ yrs.. I believe them.

I have a question regarding what you said here...
so your CPU goes to 1.5V sometimes... do you have VDroop activated in order not to damage it?
