Unfortunately on most X58 boards, the stated max ram is 24Gb (6X4gb).. I don't know if that applies with these Xeons tho. since most Work station/ Server boards can see larger than 4gb sticks (ECC)..

in theory yes, but it's mostly due to 4GB being the maximum size ram modules had at the time... also the Xeon's IMC can handle 288GB.
but not sure how much of that depends on the motherboard.

nobody gave me a straight answer so far, but I found this link:
http://wp.xin.at/archives/880

so it certainly is possible.

what is unclear to me is whether registered memory will run or not on my board, and whether ECC ram will run or not.

will it run with these functions disabled? or will it not run at all (no post) ?

in my link, the guy says: "According to the [Intel® Xeon® Processor 5600 Series Datasheet, Volume 2] your processors IMC supports up to 48GB of unbuffered DDR-III in a 6 x 2R configuration, which means using dual rank memory is probably a must here."

this guy runs 48GB on his Asus X58 board: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/785147-post43.html

Yeah, but he could have built X99 for what he spent..

Yeah I'm not sure how in the hell he spent 150 bucks on the xeon processor, tells me there's a lot of unoptimized purchasing with this build, but the beauty of it all really temps me as I'm still using an old ass haf 932 case from 6 years ago haha.

Just wait for the server upgrades. Companies regularly dump tens of blades with 12x8g ram or more. Just have to check for the right ram. There's gonna be a massive flood of server ram when they move to ddr4.

If that happens the price of LGA 2011 Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge E5 Xeons should drop as well.

I sold off my broken p6t se on ebay for 35 bucks and the buy gave me this reply to as to why hes buying it:

"we are cheating with this board at Ukraine - here we have wery poor people and we can work on these board with Xeons. Also, hour of work at Ukraine costs very low, so we can repair this board and resell at Ukraine like almost new."

I had no idea about this market practice till now lol.

That doesn't surprise me.

The processors are cheap, but the boards are in relatively short supply.

Has anyone tried overclocking their chips with only 4 or 2 cores enabled?

I haven't fooled with overclocking but I have disabled 2 of 6 cores and the chip is running cooler during gaming. Barely breaks 40*c

Why are you buying a hexcore chip only to disable cores?

Yeah i saw that and looked at performance reviews for it.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Silverstone/Argon_AR03/6.html

It looks like its equal to your cooler actually and really shows the difference between what it can do for me compared to my 212, which is why I love that they showed the prime 95 cause thats about the same temps I get on my 4ghz setup doing prime.

Its the cheapest thing I could find so far to compete.

Just get a second hand D14 for the same price.

If you just add a second fan to your cooler, it will probably be fine.. I don't know why you worry about Prime temps.. Nothing you run will even be close to stressing the CPU like that. If I worried about Prime, I couldn't get much over 4Ghz either.

I guess its cause cause I'm a moron at this overclocking stuff so I just follow the guides when they say to worry about such things lol.

IBT will tell you in 20 minutes where temps & stability are. I can tell by using some of the software I need. Sony Movie Studio Pro while rendering a fairly large Blu-ray usually will crash to desktop above 207 bclk. Using that as a guide, i set bclk @ 200 and monitor temps. They peak at low 80's after awhile, and 6 cores at 4400 is good enough for me. I'd have to spend a lot of money to get it done any faster.

I've been overclocking my chips with all 6 cores enabled for the longest. I just recently decided to see how things are with 2 cores disabled. I haven't tried to push my i7 970 any further than 4.5GHz with either 4 or 6 cores but it runs cooler during gaming. I'm curious if I can reach a higher stable overclock with 4 cores rather than all 6. I just haven't had the time. I've been able to reduce my VTT from 1.3 to 1.25v with 4 core enabled.

These X58 Xeons are like the 939 Opterons back about 10 years ago. It is amazing how great the X58 platform still is, even when its been out 6 years+.

I disagree and agree

I still have an opteron 170 being used as an HTPC and browsing the internet its fine for anything else just too slow.

So for a desktop machine I had to retire her within the 3-4 year mark.

built around 2005-2009

My 1366 build that I started in oct 2009 is still going strong today and I can probably see this system still having life with just gpu upgrades for another year or two or longer.

So you will be looking at 7-8+ years on some of these builds

I do also think the slowing down of the industry and having computers that are just fast enough + physical limits of node shrinks etc played the biggest factor in this.
