If you read back in the thread there was an incompatible EVGA board as well, something about the QPI links and the fact these Xeons have 2 instead of just one.

I'll look it up. I know about the EVGA board not working, but not the diagnosis because I don't always drop in this thread.

Not a big deal for me since I found some cheap CPU alternative.

There was a solder pad that could be bridged to repair that EVGA board. While I'm sure the same pair of pads aren't in the same location on your board, you might be able to find someone who located the right spot to fix on your board with some creative googling.

I can't tell right now because I don't have a Bloomfield to get it to work, but my board is NOT beeping in anyway. It is turns on but is immediately stuck in limbo.
You dont need to boot, there is normally a (very) small sticker on the BIOS chip or near it, that has the BIOS version written on it. It is very close to the main power connector.
Edit:
Found a picture on a German website:

That said, even if it is flashed to the latest BIOS(a beta, no less), I don't see any Xeons on the CPU support page at Biostar's website.
Doesnt matter it says "Gulftown" as description of the beta bios:
Support Gulftown CPU ( Beta )
So it should work (at least it does for all other boards).

Edit: If you cannot get yourself a Bloomfield and you have an old BIOS, then order a new BIOS chip from one of the BIOS flash services. It'll cost around $15.

IX58 C10BSP is what I have.
C10BSP .. weired it is not mentioned on the webpage ... but according to BIOSTAR's logic the less the newer it is ... thus I assume your C...-Bios is even older then the B-..-Bios of my screenshot. On the webpage there are only A-BIOSes.
I'd try to get a new BIOS chip (should be cheaper then a Bloomfield, if not a friend of yours has one somewhere in a cupboard ^^)

I think I have found an compatible and inexpensive alternative, but I have to keep quiet for now because I can't let folks ruin my plans. It might take a week to get it.

The reason I'm not sold on just getting a BIOS chip is that this board is confirmed incompatible with an L5640at [H]ardforum.

Seems like somebody did download the old BIOSes though. http://www.lejabeach.com/Biostar/TPX58/

i don't know if that link really says anything. It's quite old and i would think all the board would need is a bios update to work.

I know people told me that x58 with a 980x wouldn't work with more than 24gb of ram since intel's own site said the max was 24gb but I didn't believe it.

The key is that the last update date of 9/10/13 was after the beta BIOS supporting Gulftown was released on 2/26/13, meaning people could have updated their BIOS to the latest one and give that chip a try. Of course, someone might not have done a BIOS update, and if I can get my hands on a Bloomfield, I'll discover whether if it is really the case or not that the board can take that chip without hardware mods.

If i had one i'd send it to you for a test, but alas I do not.

So I am not guilty of going off-topic, does anyone care about a dual 5639 box@stock ?

Sure! I was wondering how a dual setup would do for rendering.. You got one?

I have a dual 5639 box@stock. 106k ppd compared to dual 6234 Opterons with 135k ppd on the same unit,

BUT...
@ 1/4th the cost and most likely 1/2 the power. usage

Have you done any 3d rendering benchmarks? Can't find any results for the l5639 with 3d rendering at stock speeds.

Which benchmarks?

The cinebench 11.5 or SPECapc 3ds max 9 one would be good. I've got a 3930k at the moment at stock and I'm assuming the 5639 would be a cheap way to get similar or slightly better performance at stock for a render node.

Thanks for that! Very kind. That's just one CPU? That's very impressive! My 3930k scores about 11 at stock. I wonder how much rendering performance decreases with clock speed as it's normally more dependent on core count over clock speed.

Set everything back to stock.. BIG difference.. (you can also see my bestscore 9.83) But for $85 it's solid perfromance..

Clock speed good for 50% improvement

It's a LOT better than the Gateway Quad core I've been using for the past 5 years..
