here is my latest OC:

I'd like to run it for a few hours under prime to make sure it's stable

Unfortunately caved and am eagerly awaiting my parts. Currently running a q6600 at 3.4. Got a (I hope) decent deal on a gigabyte GA-X58-USB3. Looks like it should work but I was unable to find confirmation. Grabbed one of the TT Water2.0 Pro coolers that was on sale at newegg. Hope its on part with some of the air coolers mentioned here.

Thanks burpo! Well, the temps are a little on the high side - hottest core reached 72 while running prime. I tried lowering the core voltage but it would not pass post. It's a work in progress

Low 70's is fine when running prime.. It won't come near that from normal use.

You are correct sir! Hottest core reached 63 during BF 4 gameplay. I also noticed that CPU utilization averages in the low 30's, compared to 50's on the i7 920

CPU usage % can be misleading because of the HT threads.. but yes... this game will use more than 4 cores, and it probably likes the extra cache? should be a good game for the 6c xeon overclocked.

Where can I get the demo? Wanting to check it out & see how it runs..

origin, I think it's under demos or free games.

I haven't run dual socket chips/boards since 2 - 1GHz Thunderbirds in a Tyan dual board. I don't overclock but I'm still tempted to pick up 2 of these and a cheaper, dual socket board (are they available and do they run with regular DDR3 or do I need ECC stuff) just to play, especially if the price is right! Something about 12 cores / 24 threads is just SEXY!

That it is! 24 threads=Sweet! I've been thinking about it too

Dual socket boards that will overclock aren't cheap nor easy to find. Straight Server boards with dual sockets are (and a lot cheaper).

19 of these NEW Asus-Z8NH-D12 server boards on Ebay (no I/O Shield) for $77 delivered ..

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Asus-Z8NH-D...261012280?pt=Motherboards&hash=item3f286a9138

I think memory ( ECC or not ) should all be the same.. If you go with ECC.. make sure they're all ECC etc. but I'm not sure. Maybe Terry can help..

You have a good chip, board & RAM.. Mine won't boot all the way thru at 216 :\ Managed to get 889 at 214 tho

Decided to join the fun and milk what I have left of this 1366 setup. Scored a brand new chip for $85 which is amazing. I can confirm that the standard Asus P6X58D-E detected the CPU as well (bios 0803). Its replacing my i7 930 which ran at 4ghz w/ 1.25qpi & 1.28 vcore.

Current setup:
Asus P6X58D-E
Intel Xeon L5639
GTX 670
Corsair Vengeance 12GB (9-9-9-24)
Corsair TX750W

After messing with the settings for a bit (no SUPER), I reached 3.4 without a hitch at 1.21 Vcore, 1.25 QPI & 1.5vdimm. To reach 3.6 I had to bump QPI up a bit & vdimm to 1.64. Anything over 3.6 requires a significant boost to QPI & Vcore. I am currently at 3.8 w/ 1.32 QPI & 1.27 Vcore. Going to try and push it further. I never really liked going beyond 1.3V on my 930, I feel like that might be a bit high, what do you guys think?

Is the 200mhz boost worth the .1 increase in Vcore & QPI? Also what are the advantages/disadvantages of SUPER? and what are optimal settings? I have never used SUPER before just always manually configured my overclocks.

EDIT: I have booted at 216x18 3.9hghz w/ 1.27vcore & 1.33 QPI (now to see if its stable is a whole different thing). Looks like it is much more dependent on bumping the QPI up rather than the Vcore. Seems to not want to boot at all around 220x18.

This chip is a smaller process than your 920, its more sensitive to voltage.

I think you'll find that anything above 3.66 is superfluous. Stability becomes an issue, and render times are not significantly improved.. 200+ bclk turns this little under-rated chip into a powerhouse, No need to push it any harder..

On a side note.. while bios 0803 added a few features, it hurt my overclock a bit.. 0703 was best for OC..

Currently at 3.8 Stable for 2 hours of prime and multiple BURN tests.

Current settings 212x18 1.27vcore 1.337QPI 1.8PLL (how are these settings?)

I can have it stable at 3.6 with 1.23 vcore (or lower) and 1.25QPI. Is the 200 mhz worth the significant increase in vcore and QPI to stay stable?

Some numbers comparing the l5639 @ 3.8 to my old i7 930 @ 4.0
Cinebench 888 vs 611

So worth the upgrade guys? What do FPS numbers look like? Any big changes?

I've got a i7-920D0@3.33 (lazy man's OC). Worth snagging this chip and replacing? I plan on lots of BF4 in the future. Seems like even a mild OC will do wonders.

I'm pretty sure you have a better chip than I do to achieve 212 at such low voltage.. Not to worry, Intel says that chip is good to 1.5 volts. I read somewhere that even above that you won't hurt it (as long as temps are good). The Asus board has good cooling as well, so I'm pretty sure you're good to go. I take it you're not using Turbo? To do so you'd have to set CPU multiplier to Auto and enable C states in CPU Configuration, under Intel PPM.

ckelley, not much difference in FPS, but probably yes in BF4.. Mild overclock? Raising Bclk from 133 to 200+ hardly seems mild..

Well compared to what you guys are trying to hit with 210+, I'd consider it mild (and somewhat easily obtainable). I was thinking starting with something in the 3.2 range, as I'm only running at 166 on my 920. Figuring going Hex and still topping what I currently have would be worth the money to try and upgrade.

BF4 is going to use the extra cores (and a lot of other s/w too), so yes.. It's a good inexpensive upgrade 166 is a mild OC, 200 not so much.. lol

2P or not 2P, that really isn't the question at all.

Who the hell decides to make an EPS12V adapter cable that wires a molex +5v pin to an EPS +12v pin? I'm glad I caught that before I plugged anything in.
