Damn tempted to pick up one of these, been thinking about a haswell set up with a overclock but this Xeon appears to have amazing bang for buck.

Main usage will be gaming, my i5 2500 non k appears to be bottlenecking in BF4 and since the game loves cores i think this Xeon will be a excellent alternative to a $300 4770k.

You guys are something awful. Took to page 25 before I broke down and ordered this. Too cheap to ignore vs. rendering benefits. Now....what to do with my i7-920 DO.
I feel your pain. I just ordered one too and I don't think it will even work with my board so I need to do some more shopping.
As for what to do with your 920, well it's all about perspective. You don't have an extra cpu, you are just short a board.

A few people have asked me for my settings. See below. This is everything changes from BIOS default or from Windows 7 default settings.

BIOS version A58. All jumpers are in default positions.

Well not so good.. Today was the 1st day of work for the new board and Northbridge gets too hot. Shut down on me twice while compiling, so I lowered volts & bclk to 207 and started my render.. 20 min. of load & she rebooted. It's running now, after I dropped to 200 and placed a fan on it.. Going back to my old P6X58D Premium board, it never had heat issues.

Fantastic thread.

I've been looking to upgrade my DDR2 based dual Opteron 8356 systems which I picked up a few years back for a steal and stumbled across this thread. Before jumping in with both feet I figured I'd do the smart thing and ask a few questions.

1) Has anyone been able to get 48gb working on X58 with L5639? Specifically the P6T SE.

2) Is there a recommended BIOS rev for P6T SE? I see P6T Deluxe, P6T vanilla in the thread but nothing on P6T SE (I could have inadvertently skipped over it). Is this a viable option? Heavy overclocking isn't my primary goal, but 6 cores and 48gb RAM is very appealing.

I already have a good overclocker with my i7 950 on the P6T SE but 6 cores is really tempting for the price.

The pair of dual Opteron 8356 systems are my virtualization lab and currently are running 48gb DDR2 each. But they're loud, motherboards are gigantic, and the 6 core L5639 would smoke the pair of 8356 quads.

It really would be nice to go from the monstrous SSI EEB cases I have to a more reasonable (and quiet) ATX case.

Aww yeah.

12 cores, 24 threads, 48gb ram, 4 onboard intel GigE nics, ESXi 5.5 and room for another 200+gb of ram.

I'm happy. My home network is happy.

Blown away by the chip, did a small OC to 166bclk and had no problems; went for broke and hit 200bclk on stock voltage (vdroop on). Running it with an Intel RTS2011LC cooler.

Had more problems pushing my RAM to 1600 than I did with the CPU (had to boost it to 1.6v for 1600 - can probably get the RAM voltage down another .01-.-3, but unsure if it's worth the time). Very happy with the acquisition.

Well mine is running at 215*16 for 3.44GHz. Stays nice and cool at full load with the H100 refurb I got from the hot deals forum.

Since it worked on my UD3, I would guess it will work on a UD4

It did work.. well sort of. Got the chip today and immediately tried it out on the EX58-UD4P with F11 BIOS.

.. But not before looking over it very carefully. The following is only visible at a certain angle under light.

On first power up, it was a tad quirky where I saw it was detected, went into BIOS to check it out, then restarted without changing anything. This is where I got the first blank screen (upon restart). I restart and it goes through post and into Windows. All seems good - even ran a brief IBT test and temps are low as ever, so I decide to try an OC.

Used similar settings to my 920 @ 3.7GHz and it wouldn't post even after a couple of bclk adjustments. I went back to default settings and got blank screens once more. Eventually, it did post and here I am typing this.

Is that a crack in the die or just a surface defect?
What multiplier are you using? Mine would boot at 16X and 166 bclk, stock voltages.. Start there and work your way up. If it doesn't want to boot, I'd see about sending it back to swap for a different chip..

Why not exchange it out while you can? No reason to keep a marginal chip, considering the supply is plentiful now.

It all started with having the Motherboard in my Dell 435MT (i7 920 + HD4850) crapping out 3 times in the years after purchase in 2008. After the last replacement it finally has lasted. Then it was the inadequate 325 watt PSU (stock died twice) that needed replacing (Coolermaster GX750). Then Shogun II came out and I had to replace the HD4850 with a HD6850 just to get decent frame rates. I'd bought some Kingston HyperX 1600mHz triple channel memory to replace the 4 sticks running in dual channel, but the motherboard could never recognize it correctly (Only reports 2/3 installed, but will occasionally report running in triple channel regardless). Ran it like this for years and it bugged the hell out of me. Finally Rome II is out...and I upgrading the videocard to a EVGA GTX 760 SC. Rome II plays very well now, but the i7 920 in the stock Dell MB is starting to show its age....mostly because you can't OC on the dell board. Thus...I bought an Asus Rampage II Gene mATX board with the intentions of stuffing it into the little Dell Studio XPS case in conjunction with the i7 920 with hopes to that my 12gb of expensive triple channel memory would now be utilized (the Dell X58 board won't run ram in XMP mode, but only JEDEC 2 -slowest- 533). So then something else happened...I read all 26 pages of this damn thread...and got to thinking about how cool 6 cores sounds. So I bought a L5639 for 79 off the bay and a refurb H100 cooler for 50. Waiting for most of it to get here so I can start experimenting. Some of this is a keeping up with the Jone's affair to be honest...my roommate has a Asus Sabertooth with an i5 2500k running at 5 gHz + 680ti and it was driving me bonkers what Rome II looked like on it. I could have probably bought his exact i5 setup for what I've paid so far, but that's not the point...I like to be different like everyone else. The real challenge will be figuring out a way to mount the H100 radiator externally on the Dell Studio XPS case. Anyway...to sum up - Asus Rampage II Gene, EVGA GTX 760 SC, 12GB Kingston HyperX 1600, Coolermaster GX 750watt, Corsair H100 Cooler- Hope it works.

It's rev 1.0. Bios in CPU-Z is showing 6.00g. even after updating to 83 it's still showing 6.00g

That's exactly what I see in my bios, and my EVGA 760 A1 board is a Revision 1.0 and will not accept the Xeon L5639.

Anyone looking to buy an Asus P6T 1366 board with 6 Gigs of DDR3 1600 CL 8 1.65v ???
