Awesome feed-back! And congrats on a nice system, and welcome to the forums

Thanks man. I've actually broken the 10 point mark in Cinebench. I messed around with a few minor things in the BIOS to get a bit more out of the chip. I think I'm leaving it at 4Ghz [x18], unless there's away to lock in that x19 or x20? Is there a way yet? I can run x20 stable, but I hate the drop to x18. Why does it do that?

Cinebench 11.5

Xeon L5639 @ 3.971Ghz [4Ghz] = 10.02

@ x18 is better than x16. - x18 pushes all of the cores as well at the same speed.

So you are telling me if I run 4.4Ghz with the x20 multi I will have two cores running @ 4.4Ghz=x20? I'll have to check that out because it appears all of them drop to x18 speeds [4Ghz]. After running benchmarks it goes back up to 4.4Ghz when doing nothing.

I figured all of the cores dropped to x18. Never seen my processor drop below x18 while letting Speedstep + Turbo. It's always 18, 19 or 20.

Edit: Here's a picture. I'll post more results as I test the active cores.

Alrighty! Looks like I've cured my server's ills (had nothing to do with the CPUs) and everything is humming along quite happily now. Now all I have to do is keep an eye out for cheap 8gb or 16gb RDIMMs lol.

I would say room temp is about 80f (again, it's a small closet ffs!).
Ambient case temps are probably 90+.

Stock clocks, HT on, 2P system, 12 DIMMs populated (RDIMMs though).
Advanced C-States are active, sensors are reporting average of 0.85v vCore.

CPUs are reading around 40c - Tmax (so 40c) and 43c - Tmax (37c) respectively.

It's a little toasty.

Not really, when I'm using mine heavy, my open air setup warms this room up, with temps in high 60's & low 70's.. I do love to see it work tho

I'm in canada

And good case and lots of case fans all manual control from front panel.

I will post a full load shot when I get home.

That's about what I get at 1.10v @ stock clocks and idle. Same HS. Lapped it and it took off ~ 8*f on average. I use 3 Sycthe Slipstream 140mm 800rpm fans on it. While gaming load with UT3 all cores stay under 40*c 78*f ambient

So far I love my i7 970. This should hold me over for another 4-5yrs

how did you mount 3 140mm's fans on it??

i'm on the tailend of this build.

this computer was built in oct 2009 and 920 swapped for 970 in 2011.

Once I see what Haswell E is doing it will probably retire this rig. Socket 1366 has been my favourite build out of all the computers i've built in the past 15 years so I will try to convert her into some kinda home server. As I did my Opteron 170 which is now doing HTPC duty.

Can someone with a Gigabyte board and this XEON-L5639 processor post all settings they changed?
Can't get 1Mhz above stock clock with my x58 Ud5 board and CMS 1600mhz memory.

Picked up one of these xeons and going to put it in a MSI X58M (Mighty Mouse) motherboard.
On MSI's site it doesn't indicate that the chip is supported, however it shows the 980x and 990x chips and the Xeon W3520 being supported. I am to assume the chip will run on this ole board.

The W series Xeons have one QPI link and this L5639 has two. It's this difference that sometimes causes problems with some boards. It is worth a shot for you though so good luck. You may want to update the bios with another cpu first if you can.

Thanks PG. The board has the latest bios as I had to update it originally to support the W3520.
Any how, got the chip installed today and it is running flawlessly! Showing all 12 threads and my 12gb of ram.
Running it stock for now until I get some heat sinks on the Mosfets for the board.
Running a CM Hyper 212+ with push/pull fans and it hasn't broke 41C at 100% load running World Community Grid.

I was able to get my L5639 up to 3.46 (216BCLK) or 3.9 if you go by what amounts to permanent turbo speed while under load. I can't seem to get the board to boot at 220BCLK. I didn't try a really high uncore v, just 1.396v as measured on the board (bios 1.4250v).

The ram I got seems to be pretty good (Teamgroup vulcan 2400, has MFR), it can do 2166 on stock volts. Can't use a higher multiplier so can't really see what it can do. It also happened to be the lowest per stick price on newegg at the time.

Please can someone with a Gigabyte board post their settings in bios? Take a screenshot of voltage and frequencies in the overclocking sections in bios?

Well now that I have an extra X58 board with 6G of ram, what can I do with it? I already have a Xeon L5639 in my main rig, and a 6 core Gulftown in my gaming rig with a spare X58 + 6Gb platform. I have most of the components I need for another system:

HAVE:
Case
Keyboard & Mouse
Monitor
Drives
CPU - if I re-use one of my 920s

NEED;
PSU - choice would be the Antec HCP 850w
GPU - depending on what I do with it which could be anything from gaming to a server, hence swapping out my GTX 670 for a new one and transferring it to the 'New' system, OR I could just get another Nvidia 0db 210 and run whatever I want off the rig
CPU - have a few extra 920's laying around, or get another Xeon L5639

220$ for the Antec. I probably won't deviate from this choice
475$ for a top end GPU
or
60$ for a silent GPU
then
85$ for the Xeon L5639

Or I could just sell the spare X58 platform leaving myself no backup system :hmm:

The problem is what could I use it for. If I keep it I'll add more stuff to an already building hoard of spare parts.

Well I am actually looking for another x58 motherboard. If you do decide to sell that board I would sure be interested in it. Trouble is I can't even PM on the site yet as I don't have enough posts. LOL
If you want feedback I have Heatware at 255-0-0 seen here:
