Current HWinfo screen shot with C states disabled, speedstep disabled and multiplier set at 18X.. I don't push mine real hard..

You can't change the way Intel designed this chip.. HWinfo & CPU-Z monitor the CPU. Cinebench puts a load on & tests the CPU.. BIG difference..

Hello. I found an interresting thing in this screenshot. My TM1 and TM2 is red! I have all CPU power savings on . Is mine broken? Also i disabled cpu core parking and use realtemp to verify the temps.

I managed to hit 3.6GHz yesterday stable in Prime with 200x18 and 1600Mhz mem... speed. Looks bad when my sensors are red

Don't worry about the red displays ( I caught the screenshot as they all turned yellow).. Only worry about temps. As long as they're good, nothing to worry about
Put that thing to work

Ok
Well i wasn't talking about the yellow bars. They pop up and down shifting from yellow to red all the time! I mean TM1 and TM2.
Also i have another error on one of my SSD drives! Guess its nothing.

The third thing that happens after i overclocked is that my DVD rom cant read dvd,s any more. Or its very very slow for being exact. Thats very irritating!

So i finally had the chance to pop in the L5639 last night and tweak the OC. Max BCLK was 200. Not sure if I can go higher if i got faster RAM. The chip throttles up and down but seemed to settle at the Cinebench score listed below. Previous 920 chip is benched as well.

Did see a modest bump in fps in BF4 so overall am pretty happy.

Rig Details:
MSI X58 PRO-E | Xeon L5639 @ 3.2ghz
Asus VG278H | Zotac GTX 480 SLI
Corsair XMS Series 24GB ddr3 1600
Samsung 256gb SSD | Crucial M4 128gb SSD
Seagate Barracuda 1TB | NZXT Tempest EVO
Corsair 850 TXV2 | Windows 7 / 8.1 pro 64bit

What the speed of your ram? Seems like my mobo is maxed out at 200 BLCK with the 1600mhz ram I have. Not even sure if I put in faster ram will help.

Please look at this post by EndlessWargasm

He was posting a link to a guide that i was following. Read it ! Very good reading and this made me understand how things work together on a X58 system.
Also i was following the step by step guide thats inside this guide!
http://www.techreaction.net/2010/09/07/3-step-overclocking-guide-bloomfield-and-gulftown/
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have 1600Mhz corsair (But now i am running them in 1560Mhz now along with CPU 3.5GHz)
I had major issues in the beginning to even bring + 1 mhz out of this Mobo/cpu/Ram !

What i did was following. Reset my bios as i did mess up everything essentially.
Just to start from zero again!

I loaded the optimized default and the only things i change was following
1. Disabled C3/C6/C7 state support
2. Disabled CPU enhanced halt (C1E)
3. QPI/VTT 1.2V
4. Ram voltage 1.66v (Check your spec)
5. Vcore 1.2V
6. SPD 8X
7. Uncore X16 (I think)
(Check your temps all the time!)
Now i tested to raise the BCLK to 180 and ran Prime95. If it was ok i raised the BCLK 10MHz and checked again. And so on... untill it would be unstable. There are 2 things that made it unstable and it was ether the QPI/VTT or Vcore that needed more juice. I then gave ether of them 1 more step! So after i reached my gole + 200mhz i step back and lowered the QPI/VTT and Vcore. I don't want to put more power on the chip and cpu that's needed. Now i am very satisfied with 3.5GHz 24/7 . Its just an amazing CPU!

Ohh and thank you all who helped me! Without this forum im not sure i would have reached above 1.2 GHz

I wish this CPU was compatible with my H77 motherboard. I want to upgrade from my i3 so bad.

6 CPU cores+hyperthreading+overclocking for under $100? Oh god! Can't imagine what video encoding must be like on this thing...

If I get a new motherboard for this I will probably end up spending more money compared to just getting a i7 for just $250.

Thanks, I tried some of that but to no avail. Wouldn't even post. Im thinking it the limitation with the mobo i have. Im ok with the results so far. Keeping an eye on pricing on triple channel 2000mhz Ram and may pull the trigger if it looks good.

CPU was i7 920 OC'd to 3.8-4.0ghz

Kept the same motherboard, MSI X58 Pro E

How do you feel about me getting this

www.ebay.com/itm/MB-G4109-002-GATEW...-TBGM01-1-Motherboard-Tested-Ok-/151106749584

http://www.ebay.com/itm/INTEL-XEON-...ACHE-QPI-5-86GT-s-LGA1366-SLBZJ-/380668007314

Its just about $150 all together. I will just has to get another casr since I'm currently using m-itx right now.

Are these cpus overclockable on all x58 motherboards or just certain ones and can x58 MBs use regular ram or do they only use ecc?

Yes on the chip on ebay. Same seller who i bought mine from.

No on the mobo. Go to first post on this thread to see what boards are working so far. Not all X58 boards are compatible. That gateway board most likely will not work.

The Sabertooth boards look like the boards that can get the highest OC. But those come at a premium.

The compatibility of these cpu varies per board.

And yes X58 can use regular Ram.

Awww...That would have been a pretty good deal for me. The other motherboards on ebay that are not broken are like around $200 which means it would be more expensive to purchase all of this then to get a i7.

Thanks, I was a little confused for a bit.

Also why are these old motherboards so expensive? It seems like they barely went down it price since the time of their release. Was these motherboards considered top of the line when they was first released?

The X58 boards still hold up fairly well for their age. I noticed prices dropped thru the floor when Sandy Bridge was released. As the inventory dried up, prices went up. Sometimes you can see a good deal on Craiglist when someone is upgrading their rig.

Hey rage. I'm having a ton of luck and fun from my Sabertooth X58. Pushed it the bclk to "229" tonight. Post and everything. No blue screen. Ran a few benchmarks as well.

Yeah I was looking at Sabertooth X58 boards going for $800 dollars a few months ago and last year across the web. MSI X58 board carried a nice price as well years after release. X58 boards are still good and can deliver a solid gaming build or workstation. Tylersburg released in 2008 - 5 years later it's still a great platform.

-16000 MB/sbi-directional 32 PCI-E lanes [x16,x16 or 4x8 etc]
-2-Way\3-Way SLI - Quad SLI and CrossfireX GPU Ready
-8.5Gb/s DDR3 Triple Channel
-Supports SATA II and SATA III
-Built in RAID controller [0-1-5-10 ready ]
-USB 3.0 supported
-Gigabit LAN [if anyone cares]
-and more depending on the motherboard features.

So yeah it's pretty much a server powerhouse with the correct setup. It was also future proofed as well. Intel gave a lot of tech bang for the buck. X79 felt more like a side grade for me which is why I never got around to upgrading. X79 is nice and all, but I'm in no rush to upgrade now. PCI-E 2.0 and 3.0 still shows minor differences while gaming last time I checked. PCI-E 2.0 is still alive and kicking with no problems. I'm glad I've came across these Xeons chips at affordable prices. Now I can probably get another 2 years out of my build.

I'm still thinking about the EVGA SR-2, but I don't think I want to put that much money in EoL technology.

Part of it is the L5639 craze. Boards were about $50 cheaper a couple of months ago. Part of it is that stock is drying up. Also Businesses are starting to upgrade and dumping their Xeon chips onto the used market causing a flood of cheap chips. Which in turn is creating big demand for these out of print boards. If you want an example of how much 1366 Xeon chips have fallen in the last 4 months. I sold a x5660 back in July for $650 within 15 minutes of putting it up. Ebay is now flooded with them for $225 or less.

Have you been following the guide? Start with X6 SPD and see how far you will reach with the BCLK. Thats the first thing i did. Also keep in mind that if you running the SPD in X8. The uncore multi... need to be atleast x1.5 the SPD (Mhz).I think its your uncore that may be messing with you!

I had to try different uncore freq... before it post. Mine actually needed double uncore as Bloomfield do. If my ram is running in 800MHZ the uncore needed to be 1600Mhz

Ok guys. I've messed around in the BIOS and got my PC to boot at 228 BCLK with no issues now. x20 = 4.555Ghz. I have mine locked at [x18] 4.1Ghz. I've ran test @ 4.1Ghz and the chip is still performing very good. So far this has been a solid chip with pretty good temperatures on the cores.

Here are my benchmarks so far.

Comparisons & Benchmarks:
I would have compared more test, but I was too impatient and couldn't wait to install the new CPU. I ran thes benchmarks before I hit 4.4Ghgz. I'll have to do some more bench's later.

Performance Test 7.0
[I know 8.0 is out. This will have to do for now for comparisons]

i7-960 @ 4Ghz = CPU Mark - 8237.4

OLD Xeon L5639 Benchmark
Xeon L5639 @ 3.974Ghz [4Ghz] = CPU Mark - 12345.9

NEW
