Well i guess i got a dud.

I left everything on auto as far as voltage and it peaking at 1.4

I did try higher bus, but kept crashing windows loading or it would blue screen. Now to put it to prime all night at 180 and see what happens. The other thing is that my mobo does not officially support xeon chips, that could be the problem.

You have to have C-States enabled for it to do 23X. Also adding .25 volts isn't going to hurt it. Running mine at .30

Off to check.

I left voltage on auto and cpuz is reporting 1.39 when running at 22X with the bus at 180!

I think my mobo not supporting the cpu is holding me back. :'(

Well cstate was off.

Turned on to auto and sure enought, it hits 23.

Put prime on and still only 20X on all 6 cores loaded.

I was hearing single thread is 23 while it can do all cores at 22x

I just confirmed (again) that I get 22x on all six cores running Prime95 with my X5560 on an ASRock X58 Extreme6. I'm currently at 180 BCLK which is 3.96 GHz and temp maxed at 83*C during the test (small FFTs). It idles down to 12x (2.160 GHz) and single thread speed is 4.160 GHz (23x).

One nice thing about this board is that if I want to switch to ECC memory I can do so. There is an option in the BIOS to enable ECC RAM, which is cool.

I'm sorry, did you mean a X5660?

Put prime on and still only 20X on all 6 cores loaded.

Set your multiplier to 22 (it will still idle down). Also set your voltage to offset 1/4 volt (.25) then raise BCLK to 195-200

Should work fine, check temps, have fun

I can't see 22. It goes to 21 and it turns red in bios.

Ok, different board then. My Asus allows setting multi at 22 and it stays there during a load.. Did you try it at 21?

Whew! Had me worried there for sec! Haha

What board are you running it on?

The same as the one your L5639 Xeon in your signature is but six times more extreme.

ASRock X58 Extreme 6. Gotta love the twelve SATA ports on it.

Here is a screenie of it running P95 and HWinfo:

The temps are skewed because I just started P95 and snapped the screenie, no time to stabilize.

I can't see 22. It goes to 21 and it turns red in bios.

Some BIOS settings on some boards require you to set them and then reboot & re-enter BIOS to see them enabled. Have you tried that? For example, my Extreme 6 is that way regarding the highest multipliers.

Haha. Man that is a nice board. What did it run you when you bought it?

I found the trick to running the higher multi. Here is what my bios settings look like:

Here is HWinfo 64 with CPUz

I don't understand how it does this and honestly it seems kinda funky.. not sure if I totally believe it...

I got it in December 2010 from Newegg, open box return, for $175.00. It was selling for something like $250.00 at the time. It was missing the backplate but had everything else in the box. I have a nice shop so I machined a new backplate for it and slapped it in my system. I had to laugh when I saw one of these same boards recently sold on ebay for $355.00 + $35.00 shipping.

My motherboard is worth more now, three years later, than it was new? That's a first.

That's the one thing I'm not interested in enabling.

Why not? With it jumping on all cores at 22x when loaded, why not go for the idle power savings instead of leaving it balls-to-the-wall all of the time?

My BIOS settings are:

Lock the multi at 22, turn on the C-states/Turbo then enjoy the best of both worlds!

Have you tried it? You may pick up additional multi for turbo..

That too.

Finally received mine today and installed it about 30min ago.
I'm also getting the 22 multiplier on all 6 cores.
I needed alot of volt to run 200x22 so i clocked it down abit and will now start running prime95 for a while at 190x22.
Cinebench R15 score of 956.
Havent done any other benchmarks yet.

Yes. And rarely do the other cores shoot up to 18 due to core parking settings.. Most of the time the other cores sit at the bottom of the multiplier list, and bounce around alot. With it 'Disabled' they are all constantly running a the 18x multi..

This Friday my X5650 comes in.. I missed out on the 214$ X5660 deal.. kicking myself for that. If my EVGA 760 A1 board would accept Xeons I'd replace my i7 970 with a X5660 or X5670.. although that 970 is like the old FX60 I had .. sold it for 350$ almost 4yrs later. The sad thing was my Opteron 170 overclocked to about the same speeds as the FX60

When I went into bios to lock the 18 multi, the options where 14,15,16,19.. no 18 so I locked the 19 in, and the next odd thing was HWinfo64 confirmed the multi was running at 18x. I tried enabling all those other features and as soon as I booted I had a BSOD..

Received my 5650 today, but like a dummy, realized I didn't have any thermal paste on hand and had to order some.

Quick Q: Is a OS reinstall required for a new CPU, or is W7 able to sort it out?

If you are using the same board no.

If you change motherboard and they have different chipset you may have to reinstall or repair install.

When I replaced my 920 with my 970 i didn't have to do anything.

Congrats on your chip! I get mine tomorrow

RE QQ: No. No need to do a re-install. Just make sure the bios is up to date before you swap out chips unless you know the motherboard will support it before hand.
