As thorough as I can be...anything you notice would be making 4 gigs disappear. It shows in CPU-Z but not windows or post.

Looks like your Multi is set at 16? I'd go with 18 and make sure speedstep is enabled & turbo is on. Post should read 3816 or close..

As far as your memory problem goes, a lot of the X58 boards have been found to not read 1 bank of memory because the CPU cooler gets tightened down too much. The traces to the memory banks (between layers) are very small & fragile. Loosening the CPU cooler has fixed a few of these boards. Maybe yours has loosened over time and the last bank started working again. 1.65 volts is typical for XMP setting of a lot of different RAM, nothing to worry about there.. Intel recommends no higher tho..

So fellahs, been messing around with my L5639 still. I've been content for the longest running my system with only 8 of the 12 megs of RAM I have installed. I've tried to different sets of RAM and get the same result...oddly enough my old 920 system has exhibited this problem as well, but its been mysteriously resolved after nearly 7 years on my i7 920 system (purchased in 08). Do you guys think the RAM issue could be related to the L5639 not liking 1.65 volt for XMP profile? Should I try some 1.5 volt ram?

Do you see all the memory when the system is at stock and not overclocked?

As Burpo stated some of the X58 can be picky with memory and once you overclock it gets worse.

Most of the motherboard makers will produce of list of memory modules they have tested with the boards to work best and I usually find its best to stick with that list.

Even on my machine and i'm using vendor approved modules for my board, I will find once or twice a year I will boot up my system and only see 10GB instead of 12.

The quick fix for me is a trip into the bios reset everything back to stock it will then see the memory. Then another reboot to load my OC profile then back in business and all 12GB's are available.

The memory check function is on to my knowledge. With default settings on the motherboard it will cause the system to reboot several times which I assume is caused by a mem error and mem check is finding optimal timings but still only sees 8 gigs. Oddly enough with this particular overclocking setup it does not reboot at all and goes straight through post and launches windows. I have remounted the heat sink a few times on the L5639 and no dice. I've went ahead and bought some Mushkin Enhanced Blackline memory that was on the approved vendor list for this motherboard. It is 3 x 4 gigs instead of the 6 x 2 gigs I'm using now. Seeing as this chip runs so cool, I may downclock it and remove the heatsink all together and see what comes up. It is as if one of the controllers on the chip isn't working. Have you heard of installing rubber grommets on the heatsink contact points to insure it doesn't short the board? In any case the multi is at 18 and believe it will occasionally for a split millisecond hit 19-20 multi. It runs very stable like this. It literally will play Assassins Creed Black Flag all day or COD Ghost. One game in particular though, War of Roses...does not like the overclock....not sure why its the man out.

-Can I simply "hot" flash it by booting up with the new bios chip, swap in the old bios chip, and flash?

I've done this before on an older motherboard. While it was a little nerve wrecking pulling the bios chip (with jewelers screwdriver) with the system running, it worked. You may want to practice removing the bios chip without power first.

Can anybody give me an estimate of how much wattage your system is drawing? I installed my new R9 290 video card and I've had two system restarts playing BF4. I'm wondering if it's overdrawing my 650w PSU...

Hmm. I have the same PSU (2009 model) I also am running an X5660 but at 4GHz. I have no problems running RO2:Rising Storm.

What all have you checked out (trouble-shot) so far?

How long has the chip been installed? I ended up getting a dead X5650 from esonic

Haven't really trouble shot so far as it just happened last night.

System is stable benchmarking under Intel burn test and Prime 95 and under Unigine. But it seems like when both GPU and CPU are under load is when the problem occurred. I set my CPU back to stock clocks (from 3.5ghz) and played BF4 for a while with no crash, but it may not have been long enough.

System was fine overclocked with my old GTX 460. I assume it's not enough power as there is no BSOD or stuttering, just instant restart like hitting the reset button. Reading up on the 290 it seems like it can draw 350+ watts, and I had it running at 1000mhz versus stock 947. But I have no idea what the rest of the system could be pulling.

Forgot to mention I am running a GTX 670. I just checked power consumption between my GTX 670 vs a GTX 770 and the difference is alot in a BF3 Benchmark.

Check the Anandtech GPU bench here and see the difference between your GTX 460 and R9 290

Their benchmark shows an OC'd 290 Tri-X at 500w total system power in Furmark so that's still well under my 650w PSU. Hmm, not sure where to start now. Guess I'll run the GPU at stock clocks and o/c the CPU back and see what happens.

As a rule of thumb I never load my PSU over 75-80%

If you want to check out the consumption at the wall you can go to Lowes or Home Depot and get a watt reader.. I think they are around 20$ I'm going to get my reader right now to see the wattage drawl from the system I am right now because I am considering upgrading to a GTX 770. The equal-lateral reason is I am looking to quiet down my GPU idle noise. So if my wall consumption is < 60% of my total PSU rating then I'll probably go for it and sell off my GTX 670 to absorb the cost..

So I think I figured out my problem. I downloaded AIDA64 and ran the system stability test with stress CPU and GPU checked. With my 3.5 or 3.8 CPU o/c it failed immediately. Stock ran fine. Adjusted core voltage, no change. Turned off Load Line Calibration and voila it didn't immediately fail the stability test..

How is it running now?

I haven't had any more restarts, but the AIDA stability test isn't giving consistent results either. Even with everything at stock settings it will still fail, even though IBT, p95 etc. is stable so I'm not sure what value to place on that test.

I'm at the specified 1.5v but @ 1395mhz (BCLK = 174x22). Would that slight speed increase require a voltage increase there?

Do you have terminals on your motherboard to test the voltages? I bet something is off.

I think it would be safe to up the voltage. I wouldn't go higher than 1.6v without having points to test it.

Other than adding a notch more of voltage to the vcore for good measure I haven't made any more changes and I haven't experienced the hard reset again nor any BSODs. So I'm just going to chalk that up to burning the gremlins out of the new GPU. Still not sure what to make of the AIDA test but whatever.

Most are made to run more efficiently around there yeah, is the point of having them rated that way.

I'm still on the wall about a X5650 lately, but have been doing other things and works been busy.

Might yet, frig if I was going to bother might plunk a X5660 in here, ever thing else is high end.

I've an Antec CP-850 in here for awhile now, so I don't worry about the PSU much.

It's kinda like a Mack truck PSU.

*edit * frig I can't fit my other signature in here from another, I'm giving up bothering

Very nice, hadn't looked at the newer ones in awhile.

That's a pretty impressive unit, I'm a Antec PSU fanboi myself, yeah.

Bookmarking that for the future perhaps

Seriously? let me know how it goes, that's were I got my L5639 from and was considering a X5650.

*edit* NM I was posting from one of your older ones and posted too fast when you said you'd gotten a dead one.

My bad, did they cover you on that well ? looks you've a 5660 in there now I'll have to read up.

Some of the Antech's are Seasonics actually I believe.

I'd bought a Antec True Power 550W Gold recently for a HTPC build and asking around if anyone knew anything of it, the majority opinion was it was a Seasonic, but that's not really a bad thing 99% of the time.

The CP-850 in here is Delta, which I'd generally prefer ya.

I always like Okie Wolf's reviews.

I must of been half awake the other night when posting a few things, after reading through em.
