I ve changed tons of set ups in the last 20 years for my hobby, i ve read lots of computer magazines and my point is DO YOU really believe a modern cpu is a bottleneck for a fast gpu?
Of course i i don't mean a celeron e 1500 pair with a 780 gtx BUT WILL u seriously notice a difference in ANY game between a XEON x5650 and even an i7 3930K??????
Not meaning in (3d mark or cinebench) BUT in ANY game like Crysis 3??????
Not tell me 120fps to 125fps is a difference because its only marketing HYPE!!!
After spending lots of money in pc hardware the only VFM hardware is a powerful gpu pair with a mid-high cpu, A Xeon X5650 clocked to 4Ghz just fly,
Forget to mention the last major hardware change in cpu world was the change from (conroe, ketsfield) core 2 duo quad, to (bloomfield, golftown) core 17, 5 years ago Thiw was a whole new pc architecture even that was a smaller change from back to 2006 when we passed from pentium 4 to core 2 chips, The last 4 years because intel has the monopoly in cpu market we have the same architecture with very little changes (like 45nm to 32nm and 22nm in Haswell chips) BUT the architecture remains the SAME, In 2006 it was impossible to compete a core 2 duo even E6300 with e P Exterme Edition even it was clocked to sky high

Yes, your dad will be very happy with that 12 threads gets things done!
Hope you can get the X58 board..

Good chip, great board (low ripple).. Just think, the X5650 at that BCLK X 22 would be 4873mhz

I'm starting to think Burpo is a used X5650 salesman.

Just kidding, love mine.

I do work the sh*t outta mine.. It runs 6 cores @4200 under a load for hours. I am still amazed everytime I render 18Gb Blu-Ray iso in under an hr. Ebay is loaded with them too. I still want X5660, but will wait to snag a deal.

Eh...My X5670 didn't work out, shady ebay'er. Purchase price was $110, got paypal refund. Not worth the going price of ~$230 for another one in what amounts to a "toy" for my four year old platform. I already have new toys to play with anyway to keep me busy, upgraded my EX495 MediaSmart Server to 4GB of ram, a Q8400S Core2Quad and installed WHS 2011. Maybe I'll catch another good price on a 5670.

I saw those and was thinking of getting one, but then I looked at his 0 feedback and figured it was probably a scam. Ebay pulled his auction the next day.

Hello,
Just out of curiousity, would an i5 2500k @ 4.0ghz be better or a Xeon X5650 @ 3.6ghz for rendering/productivity? How about gaming?

My dad does some heavy video editing/rendering, and he's been complaining that his dual Opteron 2354's haven't been cutting it due to the low clock speed. I've been reading this thread as a result.

If I were to get one, I wouldn't know if I would keep my i5 2500k, or if I would use the X5650.

Depends, if your programs actually make use of AVX then the 2500k might pull ahead.

Finally got the 'new' old 5660 rig built. Sadly, it appears I have overpaid for a duff Sabertooth board. On my 3rd set of RAM. All FAIL Memtest within minutes at stock. If the CPU fan (brand new scythe Mugen 4) is set to PWM, the bios reports a CPU fan error. Have to run ALL the system fans full on to avoid the error as well. WTH?

Navigating the BIOS is excruciatingly slow. Selecting the hardware monitor section can take as long as 5 seconds to display. Moving between items can take more than a second. Painful.

And the irony of only testing only at stock is that the BIOS randomly reports that the overclock has failed.

Flashed with the latest BIOS. Not sure what to do next but I have a few ideas. None of them pleasant.

Sorry to hear that. Sabertooth is easy. I just set XMP Profile and up'd voltages for more BCLK. Cranked it up & has been a stable work horse ever since. Are you sure of your PS?

Pretty sure. Brand new Seasonic G-550. Will try in another system. Or put in a known good PS. Thanks for the moral support.

It just ran for 5 hours without a RAM error using two slots. Maybe the third slot is hosed. Bummer, cause 8 Gigs will barely cut it for my twisted purposes.

Is your BIOS slooooow to navigate?

Yes, entering the hardware monitor section takes up to 4 seconds to enter as it checks sensors. These boards have been known to lose a bank of memory if tightened or flexed too much.

True enough. Appears I have one iffy socket. No 24GB system just yet. But, the good news is that 12GB (of selected sticks - went thru 6 sticks to find 3 good) has run Memtest for over 18 hours without a glitch. Beats the previous 5 minute record. ;-) Much happier now. Cranked it up a bit while running the test, 200 x 23. Seems stable. More so than its owner!

Will chime in with 20 OC questions later.

Glad you got it sorted out I added a 120mm fan to my CPU cooler & got new best scores. That X5660 is weighing on me tho. That and a better cooler

Great work!!! Must get my '60 to five point something to maintain the weight tho. ;-)

1.336V seems a tad excessive for 24/7 duty tho. Or is it?

***Idiot Disclosure***
While fooling around with the overwhelming overclock opts with the Sabertooth, I accidentally set the vCore to 1.68V and blissfully unaware ran some stability tests. When the temps pushed over 70, I thought, oh no, bad cooler mount.....On reboot, finally noticed the bios OVERVOLT red message. Ooopsie. ;-) The '60 survived the suicide run.
***/Red face***

Ended up getting a Scythe Mugen 4 on sale for $29. Best cooler value ever. Goes toe-to-toe with the Nocs and other high end air coolers. So far, in the almost heat of summer, the Mug keeps max temps in the 55-58 range. Haven't pushed for the five oh yet. Soon tho...

I am currently considering purchasing an L5640 (SLBV8) locally for about $70 Canadian. I was wondering how it would compare to an X5650? I know the L5640 has a few things against it including a lower TDP and a lower multiplier.

From reading a number of posts since the December time-frame, a number of individuals have gone from an L5639 to the X5650 and gotten some great results.

Would the L5640's higher multiplier help stay close to your average X5650? From what I can find on eBay, I can get an X5650 for about $130-$140 delivered/taxes/duty which is about double the price I can get the L5640 for. This particular thread doesn't have much info on the L5640 and I've not been able to find much info comparing the two CPUs (L5640 and X5650).

I am looking to have the biggest bang for the buck so to speak.

Any insights would be much appreciated.

X5650 is the most bang for your $$ because they're so cheap & plentiful. Multi can be set @ 22 instead of 20 and they're $75 delivered (US).
