Xeon L5639 Overclocking on X58

Any one Know what the next best Dual socket 1366 motherboard would be next to the EVGA SR2?? Would it be the ASUS Dual Socket Mobo?? Or i there something better??

All other dual socket 1366 boards are decent. They were made for servers/render - 'pro' machines.
But they all have the same problem: you can't oc the cpu's.

Only with SR-2 you can oc.

So if you want a render farm or a encoding machine or a lot of VM's, get a dual socket 1366 board and two X5660, and you're done.

If you do some renders/enconding but want to play games too or use some other single thread software, is better option go to a single X5660/X5670 and oc to 4.1-4.4ghz range.

With a SR-2 you can get 2 cpu'/12 cores and very fast single thread performance (for x58 platform), without a SR-2 you have to choose between multithread performance and single thread performance.

For the average user is better option 6 cores @4.2Ghz than 12 cores @3ghz .

Ok thanks for the reply!! I need more cores more then more speed as I mostly do Rendering/Encoding along with a slew of other work station tasks. I really dont do all that much gaming on my Pc although I do have 2 R9 270x's.I really dont care all that much for overclocking but it may be nice.I have been looking at the HP-z800 dual socket motherboard for the 2 X5650's I just bought.So I am just stuck on what Dual socket motherboard to purchase. I would love a EVGA SR2 but I dont know that I could justify spending $600-800 for just a motherboard when I could choose another for $150.00 or under and be set. I guess the big question is can these server boards accept standard desktop DDR3 ram modules or do I have to purchase 100% for sure EEC Ram?? I really hope they take standard desktop stuff cause I have a nice 24GB ready to go. Any more advice would be well appreciated,thanks in advance all..

Well, took the plunge today. Purchased an Intel DX58SO for $115 and an x5650 for $65 and an Xigmatek SD1283 Gaia cooler for $35, all from eBay. Talk about multi-core goodness on the cheap. Everything should be in by late next week, will put it together next weekend and see how it all works together. Hoping for a 3.6GHz or higher OC on the CPU. Will report back with results and how everything goes.

Are there any CPU burn-in tools that boot from BIOS and monitor temps? I don't really want to set up Windows on this before I make sure everything plays nice.

Well I got in my pair of X5650's in the mail today and dropped one into my MSI mobo and set the BLCK to 166 right off the bat. Needless to say it went into a never ending boot loop which didnt make any sense to me whats so ever considering both my L5639's can run 200 X 16 no problems. Long story short I spent 5 long hours scouring google for a fix. Seems the answer is I had to set me Ram to 1333 instead of 1600 even though my ram is rated 1600 8-8-8-8-24.I also had to set my QPI to 5.86 instead of 6.40. Also have turbo on and now everything boots up and is running at 3.6Ghz - 4.2Ghz. Been testing at these settings for the past couple hours first using Prime95 and now Handbrake and it seems like I have improved about 25-30% increase in encoding time upgrading to the X5650 over the L5639 on this mobo. Any ways just thought I would post my results in case some one else runs into this problem so they dont have to pull there hair out trying to find a solution like I did.

I had the same issue with ram speed. Original 3x2gb dominator's would do ~1800mhz with the old 920 chip however won't do anything near 1600 with the L5639. Timings and voltage makes no difference.

I did have a lot of luck with 3x4gb Crucial Ballistix which are currently set at 9-9-9-27 1t @2200mhz.

All these posts make me want to upgrade the L5639's.

Hi Folks,

I am getting back onto Xeon thing with a X5670, and a MSI Big Bang motherboard. I should have them this week. My old L5639 system died when my son spilled a drink down thru the radiator on top

So after all that boring info. What is the best way to run or add on SATA III to the X58A platform? I would like to use trim, for 2 or later more SSD's. I will not be running raid.
My old Gigabyte X58A OC motherboard had the better Marvell 9182 controller, but the MSI has the crappy 9128.

I have been looking at the Apricorn Solo X2. Has anyone here used that on a X58/LGA 1366 system?

Or has anyone put in one of the M.2 PCIE cards with the Plextor or Samsung M.2 drives?

Trim doesnt play well with more then 1 SSD on x58 unless your planning on adding a add on card via pci port. it works perfect for single SSD though.Just wait and see.. the second you plug in that second SSD its gonna corrupt the crap out of your drives. just google it and you'll see hundreds of pages with the same issue's I'm telling you about.
Doesnt seem to be an issue with standard HDD's only SSD's so well leave it that.

lol i'm running SSD's in Raid 0 with Trim enabled on X58.

And i'm not sure where you heard that but I have no issues on my rig.

But can't find any confirmation on the web that it works with an X5650 or any Westmere-ep for that matter. Probably more than a few in here with more than one SSD without issues. Not an X58 issue, and if it is, would seem to be system specific.

So it should be a forgone conclusion that it works with DX58SO2 as well then right? I guess its unlikely Intel would pull support for a previously supported cpu with a motherboard released later.

just seems to be isolated to those post and not an issue with x58 in general.

Anybody here have experience with the DX58SO board? It has 4 RAM sockets which seems very strange to me considering the triple channel RAM support. Not sure if this means 3 run in triple mode and the fourth runs in single mode or two doubles or what.

Hey guys I finally ripped open one of my kraken x31 sealed loop water cooling kits and installed it on my MSI X58 GD45 mobo to cool a X5650 Overclocked to 3.6-4.2Ghz. While Idle or doing minimal tasks temps stay about 21-26c.When I Hammer the cores with Full load doing something like prime 95 I am getting temps of 49-52c. Is this good temps for these cpu's or am I pushing it with temps?? Also my north bridge heatsink is getting pretty toasty running this cpu what it the best way to cool it?? maybe adding a 20MM high speed fan to it or would that be pointless?? There isnt a whole lotta room for anything bigger cause it has to fit between the Water block and my GPU which is a XFX R9 270x
