Passmark showed improvement in physics & other areas when I used 3 X 4Gb 1600 CL9 ram (noticeable in benchmarks).

I'm @ ~ 1174MHz (587x2)

I could potentially buy that 2x8 kit and put one stick in each machine, or just buy that 3x4 kit and use it in the one. I'm curious if 1 stick would be easier on my overclock and I would be able to get a higher overclock at the same vcore :hmm: Both kits are around the same $$

My physics score was 626-630 with 2 x 4Gb sticks. When I filled 3 slots (Triple channel mode) & ran same benchmarks @ same bclk, physics score was 740+.. Doubtful you would notice the difference other than benchmarks tho.

i'm currently running 6x2GB sticks.

And as mentioned other than benchmarks not a huge difference.

Yes i've been trying dual channel also triple channel and just felt the same, although benchmarks score says there are differences between those two setups; for example AIDA64 Memory Read test shows 4000 MB/s delta.

I choose to use all of three memory modules to unleash X58 best potential performance.
Same as X79/X99, if i'm using those system i would throw in 4 memory modules.

What's got me wondering is if 1 stick of 8Gb will relieve some of the pressure on other areas of the motherboard and allow for a little higher overclock at the same volts [EDIT] plus the lower requirment on the vdimms. My motherboard supports low volt adjustments for the dimms [end EDIT]. Also when my board flakes out and the ports do not detect the SATA drives and the ACHI bios isn't installed I can fix the issue by removing the ram in dimm slots 3 & 5.. could potentially be a sign that those dimm slots are on their last legs :hmm: the only thing my i7 970 rig is used for is gaming

currently at 4.3GHz core 1.33v, 3.7GHz Uncore 1.30v

My X5650 runs only 4.1Ghz 1.3v (OCCT Linpack passed).
I think my motherboard is crap, not really a decent overclocker. LoL.

Intel Desktopboard DX58OG only provides too few options to tweak with, compared to, for example, Asus P6T bios.
Rampage series, even 2nd hand, still too much for my wallet.

ya those intel boards are very limiting.

But on the other hand since intel is pulling out of the consumer chipset business its now a collectors item

Well, got mine running again and I'll stick with a very mild overclock until I can really fine-tune things properly.

I should scrounge ebay for the cheapest 1366 board I can find to set my kid up with my old 920 instead of dumping it for a lousy $50.

Heck... getting interested in workstations for the same price! I know I lose overclocking, but a Dell Precision T7500 or HP Z800 workstation would take my x5650 plus a second one just like it for 12 cores and 24 threads. Overkill for games, but I might get back to folding@home...

If I can find one dirt-cheap with no processor at all, even better!

Perhaps this one?
Supermicro X8DAL
or..
HP Z800 Workstation

For your kid..
HP Z400 X58

not bad... but I might just try to snag the whole dang workstation rather than just a proprietary board. There are a couple duallie mobos out there for plain ATX though!

Perhaps just jump to SR-2, and crank it up at 4Ghz or more. :awe:

I just cleaned my HSF & applied some Arctic Silver Ceramique 2, and dropped my temps an honest 6c.

Still can't believe what a difference this made.. Before I could only render at 195bclk (4.3ghz) max and a big project would push temps to mid/high 80's. Since going to Ceramique 2, I'm able to render @ 200bclk (4.4Ghz) and never hit 80c.. Big difference.. Keeps it cool up to 1.5v @ 80-90% load..

Aah.. nice one Burpo.
I'll give it a try, as soon as i found one.
Ceramique 2 is pretty rare in Indonesia, likely should ordered from overseas.

Ahhhh.... mental note to myself... get better thermal compound!

Hey folks, checking back in. I wanted to give a shout out to Burpo and the other contributors to this thread that has helped me get my 5650 to where its at now. It seems like I found its butter zone at 205Bclk (4.7max) and even managed to render a ten minute 1080 video project without issue. Thanks guys!

got my x5650 at 4ghz with 210 blck 19 mult 1.35 on a p6t se, was wondering if anyone has advice for getting it clocked higher than that. would getting a 3x4gb ram kit help since i have 2 different sets of ram running 3 x 2gb, they're ddr3 1600 1.65v kits.

Running all memory slot populated does put abit more stress on the system but so does running larger memory modules.

Will you see a difference from 6x2GB vs 3x4GB probably not.

Will that affect your overclock possibly, will it be worth buying brand new memory probably not.

I may have missed this somewhere but will getting the CPU to run cooler without changing clock speeds lower the voltage?

Hello all ! I just acquired a x5650 and was wondering if it is "safely overclocked". I passed IBT max, OCCT and can't pass prime95 blend test it always fails.
I have a lot of questions.

Config :
- psu corsair cx 600
- P6x58d-premium last bios (1501)
- 3x4gb corsair vengeance 1600mhz 9-9-9-24 1t 1.5v
- air cooled with a big antec case with 6 fans
- cpu cooler : my old noctua nhd12

My overclock :
- 179x(22-23) about 3.94ghz on all cores and up to 4.11 turbo, ram oc to 1788mhz 9-10-9-27 1t memtest ok
- Uclock 2x ram frequency (is it ok because i heard it must be 1.5x ram frequency)
- qpi link 6400 (the slowest number ??)
- Ratio FSBRAM 2:10 (same result in prime95 with 2:8)
- pcie block 103 (copy from Burpo)
- Vcore 1.328 max (offset 0.1125 llc on)
- cpu pll 1.8 (if i increase it becomes too hot and don't know if it helps)
- qpi/vtt 1.325 (heard that over that it may degrade westmere cpu)
- ich 1.2 (copy from Burpo)
- ich pcie 1.6 (copy from Burpo)
- ioh 1.3 (copy from Burpo)
- ioh pcie 1.6 (copy from Burpo)
- dram bus voltage 1.64 (don't know if it helps or if it's safe for a original low voltage 1.5v kit)
All features enabled like speedstep, cstate, c1e, HT on etc...

I try to hit 4ghz but i must go back with the ram frequency (ratio 2:8) for stability and the Vcore must be set to about 1.36v. Seems to be a bad overclocker but i'm happy if i can be stable with 3.9ghz. I come from a i7 920 3.8ghz 19x201 with ram 1611mhz.

I'm not a expert at overclocking and want some advise about these voltages. Is it "safe" or should i lower some voltage ? What can i do to improve stability ?

I'm french sorry for my english and thank you for your future replies.
