Overclocking ram doesn't gain you much performance anyways. I just set multiplier at 8.what? how?
I thought only one core can go up to 25x... isn't the X5675 a 23x CPU?
isn't ECC RAM harder to overclock?

I got a bunch of unbuffered ecc cheaply. People just call it server ram generically and you can often find good deals. X58a-ud5 with x5650 has no problem using the ecc function.I actually wanted to use ECC ram. I was under the impression that both motherboard and CPU should support ECC. Registered ECC RAM is cheaper in ebay (used) than unbuffered ECC. I don't think unbuffered ECC is any cheaper than non-ECC. I haven't seen any single CPU motherboard with registered-ECC support.
but if you're paying $200+ for one of these motherboards you might as well get a modern system instead.
I agree & for the first time have been considering selling all the X58 stuff while prices are good, and buying a new system..
The people bidding on the SR-2 system I guess don't realize it yet.. $620 with 6 days to go..

No. It just works I think. Because when I run memtest I get the option to turn ecc on or off.Do you see an option to Enable/Disable ECC in the BIOS?
wow that may actually hit $1000.
Heh.. 2 bidders fighting over it.. $1240 with 5 days to go.. That's insane..

That's just crazy. It was a $600 board new. But that was quite a few years ago. And those 5680's aren't THAT much now.
Happy to see I've lived long enough to encounter a high performance (muscle chip?) vintage computing market.
I love this quote - muscle chips is *exactly* what these X58 board & Xeon combos are. Sadly its getting too hot for me, so when I have any problems with my board (and I will, I'm sure the caps will go eventually) I'll not be able to justify staying in the game.
I guess its going to be like a hotrodder buying his first honda
However....what new dual socket board can overclock HW-E?
Let me know if you're gonna dump your X58 stock, so I can sell mine too. Don't want to miss the peak. ;-)

Are there any single CPU X58 motherboard (preferably server) that supports RDIMM ECC?
You sure you had RDIMM? That's registered ecc ram. As far as I know X58 does not work with registered, only unbuffered ecc.I tried it in an ASUS P6T and it worked just fine, no BIOS options but ECC was reported as on.
