If you've got the cooling to keep the furnace under control, you can just pour the voltage to those 45nm chips.....just saying. Seeing as how my W3520 isn't worth crap now I'd kind of like to hook it up to my X99 loop 'till it pops and/or fizzles. See what's it's really got if it digs deep, never went completely psycho on the voltage back in the day as it was my main pc.

What clocks can you run your w3520 at? I just told my friend to get one (for $10) and I'm hoping he'll be able to get 4.4 ghz stable? seems doable, and it'll actually be a decent upgrade from his 8320 XD

Mine was able to run up to 4458 with HT on, ~46xx something with it disabled. I never ran it disabled though, just was trying to see how fast it could go in a single threaded benchmark.

oh cool, I pretty much assured him it would run around 4.4, I trust anandtech user results better than other forums though so I thought i'd ask. He wants to beat the multi threaded results of his 8320 and I think anything above 4.2 on the quad core would beat his 4.7 ghz overclock with the 8320

Good luck.. The 8320 is no slouch. It may take a hex-core to impress him.

well he gets a bit less than 10k on 3dmark physics, I'm betting 11k will be obtainable with this but im not too sure, my l5639 gets around 13.5k

IIRC, I got a bit over 10k with it at physics, don't recall the exact number off hand though.

You can probably find some decent comparisons for similarly clocked AMD's in the Handbrake & Cinebench threads, I think my W3520 is listed in those clocked @4458.

He will probably need above average cooling to run up there as they tend to run warm. I was on CLC/AIO.

he has a beefy switech dual 140mm rad so cooling shouldnt be an issue, the fact that a quad core can reach better physics scores than the 8320 should mean that the single threaded should kill the amd, resulting in better game performance

Yes, but your default non turbo top multiplier is 24X correct? It wouldn't drop from 21X, it shouldn't drop under 24X with 6 cores loaded as your top turbo multiplier should be 26X. That is if I'm remembering the chips multipliers correctly, it's easy to get confused years down the road since they have came out.

Max is 25x

I'm still aiming at 5.0 across all six. Since my MB is limited in it's options, but has been a trooper nonetheless, I've decided to upgrade. I'm replacing my stock AlienDell ALX mother board with an MSI Big Bang XPower . To top it off, I've ordered a 5675 as well. I'll tinker with both chips until I achieve my goal or the closest damn thing to it. I've been very very close with this board and the 5675. Dad nearly pulled it off with his 5675, but is having NB temp issues. Wish me luck and screen shots are to come once they arrive and I get my power hungry hands on them!

I bought a X5687 (3.6GHz) and it turned out that it is not a good over clocker as much as X5672. I am running X5672 (3.2GHz) at 200MHz FSB (on ASRock X56 Extreme).

If any one else already tried X5687, what kind of OC are you getting with X5687?

The Big Bang was at home waiting for me when I got off last night. I was too tired to tinker but I might start the swap tonight.

what would you guys say is the best overclocking hex core under $100 right now? I would like to get a chiper that hits 4.7 or so on all 6 so I can keep up with haswell. I'm going to be doing a gpu upgrade in a few weeks and need a cpu to keep up with it.

also we hit 4.2 ghz on the w3520 almost immediately and it's killing the 8320's (4.7 ghz) performance

5670 or 5675 will be your best bet simply because of the multiplier for hopes at a daily 4.7. Don't go in expecting it though, those chips are out there but will still require some luck.

X5670 $94

Don't know if you saw my post about the E5640 I got for $15, but it hit 4.5ghz first try with .25 offset & never breaks a sweat (70c under load). It's a better overclocker than W3520. Theres more left, but I'm happy @ 4.5. Runs near a 3770.

Thanks for that link burpo i'm looking to grab one of these for another build.

Cool.. You're gonna like the way the Westmere's overclock

We shall see the intended build may just be used to host VM's so it having 24GB's of ram will be more important then clock speed. Ram and core count will matter most for this build.

That limit isn't a hard one tho.

I can take those same sticks and put them in a gulftown setup and it will boot.

the 24gb limit is where they says it not supported but it will run.

I can't remember the name now as its been awhile but one of our members on this forum had 48GB of ram working fine in a gulftown setup.

An example here

Found it

thanks, I figured it was still the 5670 but I didn't want to scroll through 30 pages to find nothing XD, also I saw the post but my friend had already gotten the w3520, I would have told him to return it but i couldnt find any evidence of the e5640 being a better overclocker and at this point he'll probably just get a hex core

I finally killed the L5639 @ 220lck and 1.4v vtt mining 24/7 for years. Picked up a x5670 however it runs cool as could be just will not clock much higher?

So far mining 24/7 stable @ 45c on air.

170blck
4090 @ 18 multi loaded
3750 qpi
3408 uncore
1700 memory 1.66v 8-8-8-24-1t (I know this is not the problem, i've had it at 2200 @ 9-9-9-27-1t 1.72v)
vcore 1.264v
vtt 1.280v

Does it just need more juice?
Any suggestions on where to keep the uncore and qpi?

Yes, no one in here can guarantee anything but you should be considered "safe" at 1.35v. Personally as long as cooling isn't a problem I feel up to 1.45 is probably ok, though I'm speaking from a general usage standpoint, I'm not sure how that would go if for instance you were to use it 24/7 mining as stated. I might feel a little uneasy with that.

I was speaking of vcore above, saw that your dead 5639 had been running 1.4vtt, general consensus seems to be never go over 1.35 vtt.

What board is it on that it gimps the multiplier like that? You should be able to run 24X loaded..
