@Burpo and @surfin - here are 8 Xeon X5675 for $100 each, and there are a bunch more around $120. Seems like a decent deal right?

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=171914986169&globalID=EBAY-US

For me, the chips are not the thing. My X5690 was $350 nzd landed which is ok.
In NZ the motherboards are just not available, so I have to get them from the states or wherever. With current exchange rate and freight they're more expensive than new mobos. Probably $500 landed for a rampage which is what I really want. Or even a gene to play with small form factors.
That site I mentioned before and got in trouble over, sorry! has cheaper mobos than ebay and loads of them, so maybe worth a look for me anyway.

Easy 4.1, first night I have it. My Rampage II Extreme took my x5650 to a very stable 4.1 on air, I'm ready to try even higher.

I just put am x5650 in a p6x58d as my p6td died. I followed burpos overclock more or less to the letter (set the bclk to 190, and dropped the voltage offset a bit). I'm using a corsair h100i, which I've given a good clean. I'm getting idle temps of 53 (core 10 is a hot ah heck). And prime95 temps of 100 degrees. And the multiplier is dropping to x13 under load (presumably temp throttling). I havn't benchmarked it, but in premiere it feels slower than the i7 960 @ stock.

I applied new thermal paste (decent stuff too), but always got high temps. Could it be a hot chip? Crap cooler? Anything else I can try?

Seems pretty high temps to me. I have air cooling and never hit 100, but I don't use Prime to test.
IBT tells me what I need to know in 15 minutes.
I'd make sure the block is mounted properly, and that there's no air in the system. Drop your offset volts a bit if you can.

I honestly can't think if anything you could do settings wise on these chips to get 53 idle with an H100i. Has to be either a very poor mount or bad pump.

I'd think so, that idle temp is very high.

Why I still like just using air myself these days, unless I was going with a large loop, which I doubt I ever will.

AIO's always just seemed like possible added problems for little performance gain, if any. I even held off on SSD's I guess a long time till they ironed many problems out.

Offset or manual voltage and how much?

That is crazy hot. Either the pump is fubarred, the IHS and waterblock are both concave or you purchased a fried castoff chip from the Burpo/Mongrel screwdriver wars.

Core 10 is a myth. ;-)

I still want to fight you for a screwdriver.

J/K

Just installed a NOS 5675 cooled with a D15. Loafing at 4.4 (BCLK 176) with .18 offset. Idles at 28 and 58 at full load on IBT or P95. Cooler intake temp in the new easy breezy case is 24c.

Pondering whether to enter the screwdriver battle arena this winter. Is the prize a new Phillips with a mag tip or some primitive flat blade?

I never had any luck overclocking my L5639 on a Rampage Gene 3. I had a watercooling setup and could never get a decent OC that was stable.

bummer.

Odd first post.

Still have one sitting next to me in an ESD bag on a TV tray next to me these days I guess.

Interesting...is that why some prefer the Gene II edition?

Mongrel, you're gonna have to eat at some point and put a plate of wholesome DIY food on the TV tray, then you could pull the Gene 3 out of the bag and perform some overclocking science for your CB 11.5 followers.

I guess as I've heard a lot here it's the luck of the draw. My first ever overclock (not that long ago) was the L5639 on a X58a UD3 and it's still the best ever for me at 210 stable with 18x and even got to 226 for a day or 2.
Sold the chip on with a P6t and I only ever got it to 190.
My 5690 can only make it to 27x 163 stable on the same UD3.

From this post: http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=36707876&postcount=1593
And yes the CPU offset voltage i've got is 0.2. Only other difference is BCLK at 190 (so ram speed a bit lower too), and dram voltage at 1.64. Also set my ram to 8:8:8:21, as its rated CL7.

The chip was on the shelf for 6 months. I shoud've tested the 960 that I took out with prime to see what the temps were like. The radiator of the h100 was absolutely stuffeed with fluff, but got these temps after cleaning it.

Is there a way I can test if the pump is stuffed? should there be a noise from it?

And I guess my last option is to take the lid off the x5650

Yes, should be a noise. Have you installed the Corsair software that monitors pump speed?

Maybe you have a duff Xeon, but my bet is on a malfunctioning AIO. Before you delid, do you have a known good air cooler to try?

no i didn't know there was corsair software - i'll hop to it! i dont have a great aircooler, i'll try the pump software first

HT , turbo boost are on , no cpu voltage /multiplier adjusted. I just decrease the QPI multiplier from 46 to 36 and the DDR multiplier from 10 to 8 , did nothing on any voltage adjustment from its default factory value. I haven't yet to try any more aggressive overclocking anyway. My motherboard is Intel DX58SO smackover.

I'm just an old dumb guy.

Looks a pretty good start with that one over01.

What cooler you have on it, the V-Core is still low ?

I run mine stupidly high I guess.

I am using the default intel 1366 cooler lol.

I don't see quite rise in temperature (within 3-8'c i guess)

Pushing that thing too far would be hard with just the stock thing.

Even an EVO 212 would help a lot.
