And yes the CPU offset voltage i've got is 0.2. Only other difference is BCLK at 190 (so ram speed a bit lower too), and dram voltage at 1.64. Also set my ram to 8:8:8:21, as its rated CL7.

The chip was on the shelf for 6 months. I shoud've tested the 960 that I took out with prime to see what the temps were like. The radiator of the h100 was absolutely stuffeed with fluff, but got these temps after cleaning it.

Is there a way I can test if the pump is stuffed? should there be a noise from it?

And I guess my last option is to take the lid off the x5650

How is your board? Did anything die or is everything ok?

You can try mixing in a little bit of apple cider vinegar in with the water to clean the loop out. It's usually recommended with new systems to clear out any production film left on the inside of the radiator.

Has anyone with an x58/xeon setup "upgraded" to a newer rig and been happy with the money spent?

I need to build a rig for family and have been thinking about just giving them my x58/x5670 setup however can not see any real upgrade for the money I will spend on a new rig!

SSD on sata3 has not been an issue for me
USB2.0 vs 3.0 has not been an issue
I run multiple video cards that mine 24/7
the x5670 @ 175blck also mines 24/7

This thing has been a tank from buying it new back in ~2010. Only thing that looks somewhat interesting is the used Opteron 6300 market...

I got an i7 5960 and X99 EVGA Micro 2.
Odd that the cpu numbers are the same as my old 5690...
Anyway.
Obviously it's heaps faster.
But the big thing was the GPU.
My cinebench r15 open GL scores and performance in real terms has gone from 100 to 185 using the same GPU - an R9 280x oc.
My old mobo was X58a UD3 rev1

That's running gen 2 PCIE.
The R9 390x (8gb) that came in the mail today will run on PCIE gen 3 and be even better (theoretically twice as fast) I'm sure.

Quick question for you guys. I posted my i7-930 oc settings to somebody and they suggested I might be interested in the x5650. The only thing I'd be looking for is a boost to gaming. Is it worth my while going through the trouble of a 5650? I use a 770 for now and only a 1920x1200 display. So, what are some schools of thought?

The IPC is almost identical. You'd gain overclocking headroom if anything. Also the low end chips or older chips will benefit most with DX12 gaming

Your 770 is the bottleneck so a cpu upgrade wouldn't do anything.

what are you fully loaded temps like now?

what vcore are you using and is HT on?

What is your ambient temp.

All of these question should be answered before you spend money on anything.

Running Boinc on the CPU and mining on the 2x gpu's. Decent amount of heat in the case.

x5670 ~73c cpu fully loaded HT on
175blck, 1.344v vcore, 1.344 vtt. Boots and runs normal apps at 185+ blck with same voltage but once 100% loaded will have random reboots. Sometimes within minutes of boot, other times after a week of 24/7 crunching. Has a tuniq tower cooler with arctic silver 5 which I now see there are many better paste options which I can try first.

Ambient temp is 68f.

Honestly a little disappointed with this x5670. The previous L5639 with run 220blck all day long crunching 100% for weeks straight.

Big difference running a 60 watt processor at 18 multiplier vs 95 watt @ 24X on same silicon..

Yes, should be a noise. Have you installed the Corsair software that monitors pump speed?

Maybe you have a duff Xeon, but my bet is on a malfunctioning AIO. Before you delid, do you have a known good air cooler to try?

duff pump - back to air and reduced my overclock a bit

Next question - can I run 32gb?
All the ram posts I've found are from 5 years ago. I know the manual says you can still have triple channel with 4 sticks of ram.

this is what I'm poised to buy:

As long as the first 3 are all in the same color slots, you have all 3 channels working optimal. Adding just 1 more dimm may slow it down some. It's an unmatched (performance sucking) option, but will get you to 32Gb..

There are some boards that are supposed to be able to run 4 slots in one triple channel config, if you put them in the right slots.

The P6T7 is supposed to be able to do it, but I've never tried it, I just run 3X4Gb myself.

But you would probably know better than I.

I am doing this on my Rampage III Extreme at the moment, both channel one slots are populated but only one stick per channel for 2 and 3.

Quick question, how much increase in watts do you expect to see if overclocking an x5650 to only the max stable speed without increasing voltage? I'm probably going to play around with second rig in my sig this (long) weekend. Anybody have any general suggestions or guidance on what to do first?

Bump up QPI volts a bit.

It's a 95 watt CPU that can easily make 150 watts when pushed, but idles at much less..

I currently run a Core i7 920 overclocked to 3.3GHz. If I went with an X5650 what would the difference in power draw roughly be? For average use am I looking at a lot of additional power usage?

No. The Xeon EP (efficient power series) CPU is a smaller node & uses less power.

I'm thinking about trying out the l5640. Does anyone here have experience with it? It runs a 19x multiplier and if it can run 220 bclk like the l5639 it might be a decent chip. Or would the x5650 be better overall?
