So my experimental setup with the MSI Big Bang Board and the 5675 is over. the 5675 bit the dust. I never did like it as much as the 5650 but it wasn't enough for me to make the effort to switch back. I went back to my old board so I could run all three of my R9's. I threw the 5675 in and no dice, it couldn't complete a windows boot. I put the 5650 back in on my highest stable settings 208 bclk (which some people wouldn't run any longer than just to boot) and its started with zero issues. Gamed for hours with movies playing and It was as happy as could be and passed thermal test. 5650 is definitely the way to go and my AW/Dell board makes it rock. Just don't ask what my vcore is...... hahaha I'll probably order another 5650 to put in the big bang for my son

Currently running an i7 960 at 3850 on a sabertooth x58 board and I am looking for a Xeon, is the 5650 best/easiest choice or do some of the higher stock clock Xeons like the 5690 clock even higher.

I also need a rec on a cooler, the stock cooler at my current o/c puts temps in the 70's while gaming.

You also have the option for the W3680 and W3690. If your X58 chipset is the latest revision it's possible that the unlocked multiplier on those chips will work on your board. My EVGA board has the first X58 chipset so I cannot use anything higher than the 26x with my W3690. Oddly I can set the multi to something like 61 in bios but when it boots into the OS only the 26 will show. It's a great chip. Overclocks better than my previous X5660 xeon did and can operate at a higher temp. My X5660 crapped out every time it went beyond 71c. That has been my personal experience.

Yes, an X5650 is great for overclocking. I have the exact same board as you, and was able to hit 5Ghz, and ran it stable at 4.7Ghz for over a yr. After trying many different CPU's, I know the Westmere EP X series, work better than Gulftown W series CPU's with your board. Using a good cooler is very important tho. Like the Noctua D14 for serious OC's.

It should work, but be aware, if you have tall memory sticks, it may interfere with the first bank.

Actually tall memory is no problem since the D15S doesn't use a push fan on the first tower. However, will need to get a NM-I3 mounting kit for 1366. Noctua support will send one for free if you contact them.

I have a D15 installed on a Sabertooth X58 and had no clearance issues with Mushkin Stealth ram (32mm height).

I believe I read that there is clearance for 64 mm in the ram slots

Found this,

"Excellent*RAM*compatibility. Thanks to its recessed lower fins, the*NH-D15S provides 65mm*clearance*for tall*memory"

So, I have the NH-D15S and an additional fan in my cart waiting to hear from Noctua if they will provide the mount kit, they ask for a receipt for the cooler and either a motherboard or processor, I bought those 5 years ago at a Microcenter b&m

They replied that proof of purchase of the cooler will be enough

Hi guys,

Sorry to barge on this thread without going through it in more detail, but could someone suggest which xeon CPU should I buy for my Gigabyte X58A-UD3 MBO?
I will replace i7 950 CPU that I'm running at 20x160Mhz, and I already ordered 6x4GB 1600Mhz Corasair DDR3 RAM.

I'm not interested in extreme overclocking I would only like to up the base clock to 160MHz and eventually keep default multiplier.

Which Ceon CPU would make best buy upgrade for this setup?

Thanks!

Low BCLK, higher Multiplier, so 5675 or 5670 would the first choices. A W3680 is another choice. It's a 130W chip, but has unlocked mult.

Never understood why someone would overclock such high end CPU, like does it really make that big of a difference?

Yes. 1st benchmark is at stock speed. Next is overclocked. Cut render times almost 50%. just by changing some settings..

My NH-D15S and additional fan came today, can't mount it until the 1366 mount kit comes, could take a couple weeks but it is free so I won't complain

Many pictures in the spoiler link, enjoy.

$79 for the cooler and $20 for the additional fan from Newegg sold by amamax.

hmm those images were supposed to be hidden in a spoiler tag, i have been using tapatalk for forums for ages now and those pics were properly hidden in the tapatalk app, didnt know it hadnt worked here, sorry, it looks like images cant be in spoilers in at least my desktop browser (chrome)

Anyway, i got my mount kit, now to find a good x5650, if anyone is selling a known good o/c'er pm me

my sabertooth x58 setup now has an amd r9 390x and a samsung evo 850 500gb ssd, had 12gb ram since 2011 when i built it and when i get the x5650 at 4ghz i should be good for another few years

Processor arrived today, thanks for the link burpo, ordered Thursday afternoon and got it in 2 days from Cali to NY. free shipping via USPS, was surprised.

So, I tore my computer apart to install the back plate to mount the cooler and of course clean everything out reroute cables etc. Got it all put back together and kind of guessed at what settings to use for 4ghz, first try at 200x20 was no go, powered off before windows booted.

Went back in and played around with multi and bclk and settled on 185x23 which bios and cpuz said 4089ghz but when I did the validation I saw it said 4255ghz, then I did the math and the 185x23 of course is 4255, not sure why I see 4071 in cpuid hw mon and CPUs like in my screen shot below.

So, I guessed at settings and didn't touch voltages, no clue if I am getting the best of my memory or if I could do 200x23 with voltage tweaks, any input would be appreciated.

You're good to go.. Sabertooth takes all the work out of over clocking, doesn't it? You can get more out of it by using offset voltage, but why bother? You're only running your memory at 1100Mhz., but other than that, looks good! Congrats on your hexcore OC! Now try some benchmarks, like Cinebench or Handbrake to see how much better it runs.

Been running it for the last 4 hours, playing wow and doing stuff I normal do and temps are 37 c to 44c peaked at 50c briefly, a far cry from the 70c I was getting on my i7 960 at 3.8 ghz

Bumped the bclk to 195 x22 for 4290 MHz and got the ram up slightly, temps did not change

=======================================================================================================================

ok, I think i will settle here and not push my luck, got 4.4ghz and got ram at 1600mhz still no voltage tweaks and temps are good, peaked at 61c on one core with the others at 53 to 60

i guess my processor needed some good old fashioned burn in, first night it wouldnt boot at 20x200 now smooth sailing at 22x200

Original freq. of 2.66Ghz. to 4.4Ghz. with minimal effort.. 6 core X5650 is a nice cheap upgrade.
